Nancy Pelosi is going to go down in history as one of the most consequential speakers in the history of the United States of America.
When Nancy was speaker, we never had to worry about whether a bill would pass. If she said she had the votes—she had the votes. Every time. pic.twitter.com/AxgvGPjmJ9

Biden condemned attacks on synagogues and Jewish businesses, harassment of Jewish students, swastikas on cemeteries and schools, and the need for armed guards at Jewish institutions as “unconscionable.”

21 million Americans would be at risk of losing Medicaid under the House Republican wish list.
It’s not right.
My budget proposes an alternative: We protect and strengthen Medicaid – by making big corporations pay their fair share.

Off to see my father for the final time.
That’s sad, but I’ve been lucky, I’ve had him as a constant for 57 years. We sang a lot of songs and performed a lot of music together. Music is one of the few things he and I share intimately.
Pretty lucky, that.

Fuck, as you say, cancer, very, very much.
Friend lost his wife of 10 years a couple of months ago. They both went to see the doctor about two years before that because of stomach pains; he had gall stones, but it turned out she had a form of stomach cancer so rare that only about four or five cases have ever been reported. Terminal diagnosis, gave her six months, she hung on way past that, determined to squeeze as much life out of her life as she possibly could.
Painless, quiet, surrounded by people who love and will remember you. When you’ve got to go, that’s the way.

They just aren’t going to be able to help themselves: Antiabortion Groups Push 2024 GOP Candidates to Endorse a National Abortion Ban
And yet:
18 months of Republican lies about Democrats wanting to kill babies (whether in the 9th month or beyond, ie, infanticide) is going to be irritating beyond belief. We’ll have to push hard on the snooze media to not “both sides” this BS. But it looks like significant majorities of Americans already know the Rs are lying and support the rights of women to make their own choices.
Run like we’re 10 points behind, run through the finish line, I know, I know…BUT STILL!

It’s painful to see someone leave but take comfort in knowing you’re able to say goodbye.
My father died suddenly of a massive coronary at work. None of us got to tell the crotchety old bastard how much we loved him or goodbye. But, then, he didn’t suffer or linger. And, it was exactly how he wanted to go. He had told several, including my grandmother, that he didn’t want to be in a hospital, hooked up to machines, and he didn’t want to be a burden to anyone.
I suppose there’s always some kind of silver lining in every cloud, depending on how you look at it.

A fewrelevant bits to the comments:
1. Count me in on “fuck cancer”. Am in SC for my father-in-law’s funeral. His was systemic and fast, seven weeks after the first symptom that triggered a diagnostic test (and five and a half weeks after the oncologist gave the diagnosis), he was dead. He only had an opportunity for a little palliative radiation on his lower spine and one round of Keytruda, and was officially on the hospice roll for under 12 hours.
2. The time sensitive bans are the deepest cuts of all, because the later terminated pregnancies are always the tragic pregnancies with massive complications for mother and gestating fetus.
3. Ben “The Guy Whose Wife Sports a Dusty Dry Vag” Shapiro is beating a drum about collapsing birth rates. This is concerning and likely part of the organized segue into contraception in general.

Good thoughts to both of you. Losing a parent is tough and so is losing a child. And yes, fuck cancer.
As for me, I unexpectedly have the week off all next week. They are doing a major remodel of our campus housing and, as a part of that and also a just-finished major remodel of our general classroom building, they have to shut off all the electricity on campus for at least 5 days. So we get free days off and then the holiday on the next Monday. I’m very excited for it.

Delurking to celebrate an unexpected day off today. The boarding school where I’ve been a maternity leave substitute this semester has a “Head’s Holiday” today-think snow day but without a reason other than making the students happy by canceling classes for the day.
I can definitely use the found time since I spent four days last week traveling to and from my son’s college graduation. He’s home now, catching up on sleep and theoretically trying to find an apartment where he can live when he starts his new job next month. I will spend the day nagging him, doing chores around the house, and figuring out how to adjust the final round of quizzes to account for the disruption of today’s lost class meetings.

Savor that last trip.
I remember mine. I worked for, with and then my father worked for me, for almost 30 yrs. Then one day he asked me a question – which told me that his mind had reached a milestone, the end of decades of working around machinery. Because he couldn’t remember how to be safe or what to do. In a few years he couldn’t remember his name or a bit later how to speak. Alzheimers.
He was still him, he could still crush my hand when he shook it, he knew he knew me, he always smiled, but speech and words were lost.
They are important to us because they helped us be us, and because we are of them. The good ones are far better than just good. Be like your dad. Be like my dad. Be a good human.
Ruckus
@Nukular Biskits:
WOW.
That was spectacularly well received by the twitter audience. They advised him well as to the value his ideas have and that everyone having loads of kids asap is such a grand idea for them and humanity. It’s amazing how well he managed to stick his head even farther up where the sun don’t shine.
