Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

No one could have predicted…

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

You cannot shame the shameless.

The willow is too close to the house.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

How stupid are these people?

I tell you what, if more progressives were like Anthony Weiner than Howard Dean (who still can not get it through his over-sized ego head that you couldn’t get most of the positive things in this bill by just “ramming it through reconciliation), there wouldn’t be any hippy-punching on this blog at all.

Although Weiner missed a point- while Nooners was droning on about fixing the economy, Weiner could have taken a moment to point out the Democrats would love to do more about jobs and the economy… if her party would quit fucking filibustering.

And it appears DougJ and I were both reading Wonkette at the same time.

Update on John Barrow

by Dennis G.|  March 19, 20107:13 pm| 37 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Not so long ago I got off the phone with a member of John Barrow’s campaign team. He told me that John would be voting NO. The reasons given were quite a few, but they all boiled down to fear.

John Barrow is afraid that the Republicans will use a YES vote to beat him in November. He has made the calculation that he can vote NO in a District that Barack Obama won by 54.09% because he thinks the Democrats in the 12th will have no options other than giving him their support in November–no matter how much he betrays them.

Almost one out of every four people in his District do not have any health insurance, but John seems to feel that it is OK to tell them to fuck off because he is afraid that Glenn Beck might say something mean about him.

He is a spineless coward, but that means he could change his vote between now and Sunday if he is given reasons to fear the backlash of his NO vote more than he already fears Fox News and Republican talking points.

So call him. His numbers are below the fold. And if you have connections to an organization (Unions, the NAACP, AARP, etc.) that could send the weasel a message–encourage them to give Barrow a call as well.

It might also be a good time to send Regina Thomas–his Primary opponent–some money.

If you are in the 12th District of Georgia, give Barrow a call:

Washington, DC / p: (202) 225-2823 / f: (202) 225-3377

Augusta, GA / p: (706)722-4494 / f: (706) 722-4496

Milledgeville, GA / p:(478) 452-4611 / f: (478) 451-0717

Sandersville, GA / p: (478) 553-1923 / f: (478) 553-9215

Savannah, GA / p: (912) 354-7282 / f: (912) 354-7782

Vidalia, GA / p: (912) 537-9301 / f: (912) 537-9266

If you are in Georgia outside of the 12th District, give John a call as well and let him know that his dreams of running for the Senate in 2014 are dead if he votes NO on HCR.

And if you are in the rest of the Nation, call and ask him to put the needs of our Nation above his ambition.

If John Barrow does vote NO, I think he should be a target for defeat in the Primary. His entire rational for voting NO is because he does not think 2010 will be a base election. His aide indicated that John did not think he could rely on African Americans to turn out and vote unless Barack Obama was on the ballot. If this is Barrows thinking he is more than a coward, he is also an idiot.

Well, it is time to get back to the phones.

Cheers

dengre

It Helps To Phone A Lot

A reader just wrote me that Stephen Lynch’s “no” was basically absolute yesterday, but today Lynch’s staffer hedged a lot more about his problems with “the Senate bill”. When pressed about how how he would vote on the bill as it will probably come up on Sunday she wouldn’t say. Movement? Call and find out tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, many Congressional Dems will have their offices open Saturday to give more people a chance to comment. Tell family and friends that they have one more chance to make this happen!

Also. Too. Another reader tells me that the free fax site faxzero is a handy way to get your message through when phone lines are tied up.

Did Joseph Cao Switch To ‘Maybe’?

by Tim F|  March 19, 20101:45 pm| 170 Comments

Per CNN. If he goes through with it, Cao will almost certainly switch parties on the same day that he votes ‘yes’. God knows he won’t be a featured speaker at the next GOP convention. If you live in the area it can’t hurt to phone Cao and encourage him to do both. The screaming that his staff are getting from the right must be epic.

DanF.

I met with one of Baron Hill’s staffers before lunch today. I explained my strong support for the bill. I asked if the Congressman had seen the CBO score, and was assured that he had. I was told that Baron Hill wanted to see the text of the reconciliation bill and get feed-back from the community before making his decision.

A ton of Representatives take constituent calls very seriously. And they should. The Framers gave Representatives two-year terms precisely because it makes the House responsive to the day-to-day constituent demands. So get their staff on the line and demand.

What Time Is It In New York?

Time to phone John Hall.

I just got off the phone with Congressman John Hall’s office (NY-19). I assumed he would vote for HCR but he is undeclared. I gave money to elect Hall. His staff said I was one of only TWO calls in support of HCR, and the office has been flooded with calls opposing the bill. He will make up his mind on Sunday, but the staff member said calls are needed, and if I care about what happens we need to contact friends and family to call Hall’s office to voice support. I could hear the worry and fear in her voice.

If you have already called, send a fax as well. Faxes are as close as you can get to the gold standard of written letters, which take too long to arrive ever since the anthrax business.
