Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

No one could have predicted…

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

The lights are all blinking red.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

This fight is for everything.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Early Morning Open Thread: Everything Old Is…

by Anne Laurie|  February 3, 20105:23 am| 50 Comments

This post is in: Cat Blogging, Open Threads, Popular Culture, Television, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell

John’s busted shoulder has left Tunch’s many fans desperate for a feline, er, fix… yet my tech skills are limited to stealing others’ work.

Stunt Double My Piebald Arse

Photo courtesy of commentor Mr. Whipple, who says: “How about some Punkatude?… He goes by Punky, Punky’s Whips, Mr. Whipples, Whippy whip, Orange whip, Booj, Stinkbutt, Mr. Crusty, Nipples and Champ. Those are the ones I can remember offhand.”

On a very different topic… HBO is “eyeing” a biopic about anti-gay activist Anita Bryant.

“Sex and the City” creator Darren Star is on board to direct the film, which is being written by “Runaway” creator Chad Hodge. Star also is executive producing with Dennis Erdman. “She is a fascinating person on every single level,” said Hodge… “The twists and turns of her life are incredible.”
__
In 1959 and ’60, she was a major pop star with three million-selling records. After marrying and settling in Florida, she reverted to Christian music and, projecting a wholesome image, began plugging such blue-chip companies as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods and Holiday Inn. Her most famous celebrity endorsement gig was for the Florida Citrus Commission, for which she sang in a series of TV commercials, closing each ad with the tag line, “A day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine.”
__
… In 1977, she switched to political activism, launching a crusade to repeal a new Miami-Dade County ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation…
__
“As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children,” she said. Her Save the Children coalition got the new law overturned within a year, and it took 20 years for it to be reinstated.

Allison Waldman on TVSquad, where I first read about this, said: “Today, many people have no idea who Anita Bryant is. The Miss America contestant turned professional singer and commercial spokesperson turned anti-gay celebrity activist was a firebrand to a controversy that raged in the 1980s, but for an entire generation — maybe more — she’s unknown.”

I was 21 when Ms. Bryant and Jerry Falwell started that particular crusade. (Off my lawn, you kids get.) Wonder if I can find my IMMORAL MINORITY political pinback?

Waldman also speculates about which actor might be chosen to play Bryant. One of her commentors suggests: “Isn’t it obvious? I understand that Carrie Prejean is available.”

And finally, John Cole will finally get to see new episodes of Southland on TNT starting March 2. There’s a sneak peak at the link. Looks good to me, and I hope enough people watch this abbreviated “second season” to bring this great team of writers and actors back for a good long run.

The grifter speaks:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) called Monday evening for White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s firing over remarks he allegedly made about the intellectually disabled.

Palin, the mother of a child with Down’s Syndrome, called on President Barack Obama to end Emanuel’s tenure as chief of staff for having allegedly called participants in a strategy session “f—ing retarded.”

Yes. People should be fired for private comments that have no impact on policy in a closed strategy meeting.

Everything has gone quiet lately…too quiet. Either party leaders have some kind of eleven dimensional chess plan in motion, as John Chait thinks, or the issue honestly has moved to a back burner. I might feel more encouraged if the President would whip support for a specific plan of action (like, again, he did for Ben Bernanke) rather than these vague words of encouragement that we heard at the SOTU and after. On the other hand, if he truly is waiting for Godot Snowe then we are all hosed.

Pestering your elected officials can’t hurt. Even if we don’t win it will feel better than yelling at the TV.

The switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Guide for newbies here.

Early Morning Open Thread: Whither the Weather?

From a period many years before the groundhog took over forecasting duties…

“If Candlemas is bright and clear,
There’ll be two winters in the year;
If Candlemas brings snow and rain,
Old winter shall not come again.”

Required legal boilerplate: Not a scienterrific methodology. So, what’s the weather like in your neighborhood this morning?

Not too interested in anything atm, so I am going back to the chair and the ice pump to let my mind rot in front of the tv. Despite all the bitching I am doing, I feel super lucky. Can you imagine what an injury like this would be like without insurance? Or in the 1800’s?

And all the little things that make this recovery so much easier. The baby wipes, the pain meds, the ice therapy, etc. Hell, I’m even paying a maid service to come in and clean the kitchen and bathroom because I can not sweep or mop. So fortunate I have the means to do this.

It’s All In the Game

The Wasilla wingnut is still playing the long con:

Sarah Palin has been using her political action committee to buy up thousands of copies of her book, “Going Rogue,” in order to mail copies of the memoir to her donors, newly filed campaign records show.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate had her political organization spend more than $63,000 on what her reports describe as “books for fundraising donor fulfillment.” The payments went to Harper Collins, her publisher, and in some instances to HSP Direct, a Virginia-based direct mail fundraising firm that serves a number of well-known conservative politicians and pundits.

I guess this is her version of trickle down.
