Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

All hail the time of the bunny!

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Giving up is unforgivable.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

He really is that stupid.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Gotta respect the bald moral deciduousness of pretending to be scandalized by the DNC chair saying rude things about Republicans in the same week an elected House GOP member called Democrats "pro-pedophile." https://t.co/F6xIrdLqOC

GOP Venality Open Thread: Project (No) Veritas Tries (& Fails) to Make ‘Ashley’s Diary’ the New ‘Hunter’s Laptop’

by Anne Laurie|  March 22, 202212:23 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: Election 2020, Excellent Links, Grifters Gonna Grift, Republican Venality, Media Mudlarks

NEW: Ashley Biden's diary was passed around at a Trump fundraiser in early Sept. '20 at the home of a Trump donor who ultimately helped steer it to Project Veritas. The donor was nominated by Trump to an executive branch post in Dec. '20. w/@adamgoldmanNYT https://t.co/Yr73QgaRb1

— Michael S. Schmidt (@nytmike) March 20, 2022

A month before the 2020 election, Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s daughter, Ashley, received a call from a man offering help. Striking a friendly tone, the man said that he had found a diary that he believed belonged to Ms. Biden and that he wanted to return it to her.

Ms. Biden had in fact kept a diary the previous year as she recovered from addiction and had stored it and some other belongings at a friend’s home in Florida where she had been living until a few months earlier. The diary’s highly personal contents, if publicly disclosed, could prove an embarrassment or a distraction to her father at a critical moment in the campaign…

The man on the other end of the phone worked for Project Veritas, a conservative group that had become a favorite of President Donald J. Trump, according to interviews with people familiar with the sequence of events. From a conference room at the group’s headquarters in Westchester County, N.Y., surrounded by other top members of the group, the caller was seeking to trick Ms. Biden into confirming the authenticity of the diary, which Project Veritas was about to purchase from two intermediaries for $40,000.

The caller did not identify himself as being affiliated with Project Veritas, according to accounts from two people with knowledge of the conversation. By the end of the call, several of the group’s operatives who had either listened in, heard recordings of the call or been told of it believed that Ms. Biden had said more than enough to confirm that it was hers…

Drawn from interviews, court filings and other documents, the new information adds further texture to what is known about an episode that has led to a criminal investigation of Project Veritas by federal prosecutors who have suggested they have evidence that the group was complicit in stealing Ms. Biden’s property and in transporting stolen goods across state lines.

And by showing that Project Veritas employed deception rather than traditional journalistic techniques in the way it approached Ms. Biden — the caller identified himself with a fake name — the new accounts could further complicate the organization’s assertions in court filings that it should be treated as a publisher and granted First Amendment protections. Project Veritas regularly carries out undercover stings, surveillance operations and ambush interviews, mostly against liberal groups and journalists…

Some backstory, from a longer thread:

The good news is — apparently President Biden is a hard man to demonize!

On the other hand, another midterm round of every prominent Media Village Idiot insisting that Questions have been raised (we brought in the heavy-duty winch for just that purpose) is not gonna be good for anyone’s blood pressure…

Short thread??
If you're reading the stories about Durham's investigation today (Fox News, the Daily Mail, etc) claiming there was an elaborate hoax by team Clinton to associate Trump with Russia, bear in mind that they're confusing 3 separate stories to obfuscate the facts

— Tamsin Shaw (@ProfessorShaw) February 15, 2022

3. A further obscure story about the use of Russian cellphones of a particular kind, very few of which were in use.

These stories can't be coherently put together to form a plot by the DNC to smear Trump and win the election.

But it's not the first time we've seen this strategy

For Entertainment Purposes Only: ‘The Political Life of Dr. Oz’

by Anne Laurie|  December 28, 202110:20 pm| 116 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!, Media Mudlarks

I spent the last 3 weeks reporting on Dr. Oz for @NYMag. Things got strange quickly. https://t.co/aa2k8A1raM

— Olivia Nuzzi (@Olivianuzzi) December 28, 2021

Yes, Nuzzi is problematic (and she seems to have terrible taste in men), but it’s always fun to watch an assassin stalk a member of the enemy party:

… I decided to try reaching the Ozes directly, since my efforts to contact the candidate via what you might call the formal process were not working. There was no answer at a number listed for their home in New Jersey. And no answer at the 212 number listed for Dr. Oz himself. Then I tried Lisa Oz, the self-help author and self-described certified Reiki expert who has been married to the candidate for 36 years. To my surprise, she picked up — for about a second. Just as quickly as it started, the call was over. I had barely said hello. Unsure if we’d been disconnected or she’d hung up on me, I tried her back. The tone of her voice suggested it had definitely been the latter.

“How did you get my number?” she asked sharply. I told her that her number was listed in public records, and this annoyed her too. “Oh,” she said, “I should have gotten rid of that.” I was about to explain that public records don’t work that way, but she cut in. “Have a nice day,” she said, but it sounded like a cross between the way women of the South say “Bless your heart” and men of Brooklyn call some asshole “pal” after being cut off in traffic. Then she hung up.

Or she thought she did.

“It’s Olivia from The New Yorker, the woman who talked to Michelle,” she said…

Another voice answered. It was Dr. Oz.

“Michelle should never have spoken to her,” he said. “That’s who’s down at the office now.”

Dr. and Mrs. Oz did not or could not hear me, and they did not realize that, rather than end the phone call, Lisa Oz had mistakenly connected her device to what sounded like the sound system of a vehicle, meaning that as they engaged in paranoid conversation and argument for more than four minutes, I remained on the line, hearing every word of it…

“That’s what Casey — ” Mrs. Oz began to say, referring to the campaign manager. “When Michelle told me she spoke to her — ” she continued, referring to Michelle Bouchard, a longtime friend of the couple whom I had interviewed a few days earlier. We’d hit it off during a long conversation that I found helpful for understanding Dr. and Mrs. Oz, and she had volunteered to forward my request to the couple and encourage them to speak with me too. Then she clammed up. If she was going to talk with me again, she said, she would have to get approval from the Ozes before doing so. Another friend of the couple, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity, said that Lisa Oz was not happy to hear that associates were freely commenting about her husband to a reporter and that she had been calling around, complaining that “some fucking girl” was “doing a hit piece” and that the policy going forward should be “Don’t fucking talk to her.” It was only day two of my assignment, when my questions were devastating suggestions of character assassination like “What is Dr. Oz like?” and “What do you think of his decision to run for office?”…

Doors slammed. Dr. and Mrs. Oz seemed to exit the car and enter a space where they greeted others with whom they engaged for a few seconds in animated conversation about what sounded like a million random things at once, from Mrs. Oz bringing someone something to eat to, out of nowhere, the subject of NFTs. The call ended.

I stared at my phone, upset by what I had heard and not sure what to do. Before I could figure it out, the phone rang. It was Lisa Oz. I picked it up and said hello. She paused, then she hung up on me. This time she was successful…

NB: Nuzzi also did a memorable story about Giuliani accidentally butt-dialing her — and a bunch of others. And she got her big break with the first story about Anthony Weiner’s insalubrious phone habits. Fortune, or at least modern communication technology, favors the young.

— Jean-Michel Connard ? (@torriangray) October 21, 2021

Joe Biden is of an age and a tradition where words had weight. Acknowledging that weight, there were some words one didn’t use around strangers, children, or (at the intersection of those classes) the press.

Our failed modern press treats words as bulk-rate trinkets from a kiddy-party goody bag, to be snatched at and discarded. Blake Hounsell has just been promoted from Politico to the NYTimes on the strength of his word-pinata game…

Not only does this not in any way shock me but anyone attempting to feign shock at this is committing the most overt attack on the global Irish diaspora and its culture in the post-Good Friday Accords era

— Cmdr. Overbite (@cmdroverbite) October 21, 2021

Of course, the pundits are *much* more sympathetic to the rightwing’s gleeful group embrace of a toddler-level attempt at shocking the grownups…

You can delete this disrespectful tweet, @AnnieLinskey, but the damage was done. You must have known that Joe Biden’s late son, wife and daughter are all buried in that cemetery. You owe Joe an apology. Oh, and by the way, his legislative agenda isn’t dying—it’s being negotiated. pic.twitter.com/5kGJwDKs2c

First time I noticed Linskey was when the Boston Globe assigned her to fangirl for Scott Brown by nipping at Elizabeth Warren’s ankles. Then the Washington Post, to their shame, recruited her (along with her coatholder, Matt Viser) to do the same job during Warren’s presidential campaign. Last ‘news’ I remember from her, she was gleefully assuming the Biden’s dog Major would be euthanized for nipping a WH staffer…

Monday Morning Open Thread: Make The GOP & Its Enablers Eat It

Ds must tie all Rs to the lies they have enabled and the ludicrous stunts of the former president. Candidates for office who remain allied with an authoritarian movement led by a crackpot should expect to be mocked, shamed and denounced.https://t.co/6Uv4thHk8P

— Jennifer 'pro-voting' Rubin (@JRubinBlogger) September 19, 2021

I don’t think respectable conservative ladies like Ms. Rubin permit themselves (at least in public) to flip off those who have offended them. But after this weekend’s Media Mudlarks mean-girl kerfuffle, this seems to me like a reasonable substitute:

Republicans haven’t made many allies nor changed many minds since President Biden took office. To the contrary, they remain invested in opposing overwhelmingly popular measures. Biden’s economic agenda maintains a high level of support (generally 60 percent or more); the GOP’s unfavorable ratings are sky-high; and voters consider Republicans more extreme than Democrats. Republicans have drawn a line in the sand on vaccine mandates — which a large majority of Americans support. Certainly, Biden’s poll numbers are down — but that has not inured to Republicans’ advantage in any noticeable way, in part because they insist on sticking to their unpopular, ludicrous positions (e.g., downplaying or denying domestic terrorists’ Jan. 6 insurrection).

As for the Republicans’ anti-mandate hysteria, the death tolls and misery are practically off the charts in deep-red states. And governors endangering children and other residents by blocking mask and vaccine requirements have seen their popularity plummet.

Meanwhile, the MAGA crowd still fanning the flames of the “big lie” have been on an embarrassing losing streak (though one would be hard-pressed to find “Republicans in Disarray” headlines)…

None of this means that the Trumpist threat is gone or that the majority of Republicans have emerged from the alternative universe constructed by right-wing media. We surely have not defused Republican efforts to suppress voting and install mechanisms to overturn unfavorable results. House members still wink and nod at, if not embrace, violence. However, when a movement depends on the triumphant victory and constant “winning” to feed toxic masculinity, losses — embarrassing losses — can be especially debilitating. Fizzled rallies deplete the MAGA crowd’s excitement and allure.

Democratic strategist James Carville has counseled candidates to throw drowning opponents an “anvil.” How should Democrats (and those defending democracy) put that into practice?
