You don’t have to be a full-on bible thumper to be with Bush, or conservatism. If you hew closely to the Judeo-Christian system of morality, or if you believe that “social justice” isn’t just a code word for forcible redistribution of the wealth but rather a duty of doing right, when there is a choice between right and wrong – well, then you are probably in Bush’s camp, more or less.
There are some morally driven people on the left, but most of the morals I see emanating from the left appear to be of the “smug assurances of the age” type of morals – “why, everybody should be in favor of gay marriage, and anybody who isn’t is just an immoral hater” type stuff. As the Dems have raced to ditch any notion of conventional morality (with its timeless notion of right and wrong) people who believe that there is something beyond themselves and the momentary pleasure of self indulgence, have had to move to a new political address. The Republican Party may not be a permanent home, but it’s a decent place to rent an apartment for now.

I don’t really see it as that good a point; distilled, Yglesias is basically saying, “They’re pious moralizers who think they’re doing Good Works(tm) but nevertheless get more wrong than right.”
Of course, take my opinion for what it is: snark from somebody who thinks the whole concept of “social justice” is Marxist claptrap.

An interesting post indeed but, like Cadillaqjaq, I find the comments more interesting. If they spent half as much time weighing the good and harm done by various governmental and NGO aid programs, they might actually see an improvement in the “social justice” they are looking for.
in jaggedly memorable verse, tattoo the ill-starred romance between jerusalem the narrator and her charismatic, bible needy and unfaithful husband, christ who writes her romantic letters cross in her teenage years, introduces cross her to his tragic friend Ray, holly
CadillaqJaq
Yes, John, but did you read the comments to MY’s post? Jeezo-pete… and many of those assholes are in wonderment that GWB was reelected.
Al Maviva
Interesting yes, but he still doesn’t get it.

I just said it was interesting. Of course it is going to be snooty and condescending- it is Matt talking about Republicans.
Dave Schuler
Way too snooty for a kid who can’t string together a grammatical sentence without an editor looking over his shoulder:
and that they are tacked on to various more-or-less nutty proposals that strike Mark and I as unrelated
Mike Knous
That was a good post, thank you!
Baxter
Interesting… that’s good info to know.
