John- Some of us Democrats DO have a clue, and agree with your point. Check out the discussion here.

If the Left choses to characterize those of faith as members of the Taliban, etc I encourage them to continue this practise. What better manner to demonstrate one’s superiority and tolerance then using this method of discourse. Its a winner and I hope they will continue to characterize anyone who doesn’t agree with them as a fundamentalist christian with nazi arm bands and KKK robes hidden in the church basement. Its the best method possible to win us over.

As far as the “coastal elitists” taking over the “heartland,’ take a look at this site: a more telling Red-Blue national map, COUNTY-BY-COUNTY… one helluva heartland to take over.

But what is Ford really saying? When I hear a Democrat say he or she is for “talking about faith,” I usually take that to mean “playing lip service to the rubes.” The reaction of the vocal left to this election illustrates fairly well that there is no room in the Democratic Party for traditional Christians. They can lie about their peity all they’d like, but I’m not buying it any more than I buy Kerry’s hunting trips as proof he’s not ardently pro gun control.

You can talk about faith all you want. Faith isn’t about talk. It’s about belief, and matching your actions to your beliefs. Faith without works is dead, and all that.
Kerry is a great example – he’s all about being against abortion, personally. But he can’t bring himself to vote against it ever, even when it looks to all intents and purposes like infanticide. Knowing that, it’s really hard to take his churching up seriously.
Bush on the other hand appears to tell the truth; he shuns people who lie to him (Arafat springs to mind), keeps his own word, and right or wrong in his policy choices, sticks to them with a real sense of integrity. I can’t look at him and say that he’s a good Christian or man of faith or whatever – but his actions don’t make me preclude that possibility so when he talks about his faith and how it motivates his actions I tend to believe him, and if I agree on that level that he is doing the right thing, or at least not doing the wrong thing, it’s easier to support him.
If a politician can speak credibly about his faith, I trust him more as a person because of where he is coming from; I know more about the rules under which he operates and how is is (hopefully) likely to act in a troubling situation. I’d trust more Dems if they could speak genuinely about faith, but we know from all the Demographic data that the great majority of Dems are “spiritualists” rather than believers (personal notions of God, rather than followers of a specific religious code). That’s good for them, it’s a free country and we all have free will – but somebody who tells me they commune with God regularly doesn’t really tell me as much as a person who is a regular communicant in the Catholic Church, or a practicing Methodist. Talking about God generally is nice, but where you make the value judgement is on the code the person purports to live by.

They seem to have a problem with the words “devout” and “fanatic.” They need to learn that the one is not the same as the other.

I’m not particularly religious and so may not be the best to speak on this but does it not really come down to respect for another’s beliefs? You don’t have to share those beliefs but if you show respect and give people a reason to believe you have a moral code (and not just during the election) this would probably be sufficient for most people.

I hope the Democrats just keep on truckin’ and nominate Hillary for President on the next go around. She’ll get trounced in the general election and Republicans will pick up even more seats. Stop talking about Harold Ford. The guy makes sense, is a genuine patriot, and loves his country…this is the last thing the Democrats want and the last thing we should want for them. I still hear Zell’s speach echoing in my head. “Armed Forces. Armed with what? Spit balls!!!!!” –Republicanas Maximus
