Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

We will not go back.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

That Liberal Media

Dumbest Statement of the Decade:

If all the stories about what Kerry did in Vietnam are not balanced by serious scrutiny of Bush in the Vietnam years, the media will be capitulating to a right-wing smear campaign. Surely our nation’s editors and producers don’t want to send a signal that all you have to do to set the media’s agenda is spend a half-million bucks on television ads. -E.J. Dionne

Hilarity ensues.

Google:

Bush+National+Guard: Results 1 – 10 of about 703,000

Bush + National + Guard + Records: Results 1 – 10 of about 278,000

Bush + AWOL: Results 1 – 10 of about 101,000

Bush + Deserter: Results 1 – 10 of about 38,100

I tried to get Lexis-Nexis results, but it keeps freezing because there are too many documents to retrieve.

Donald Sensing and the Instapundit have more.

*** Update ***

More here.

*** Update ***

To the carping posters who want to claim that I should be comparing the coverage of ‘Bush Awol’ prior to the 2000 election and the ‘Kerry Swfit Vets’ prior to the 2004 election, I say nonsense.

At issue is the 2004 election, not the 200 election, because the 2000 election is OVER. Therefore, the comparison of stories about Bush Awol and saturation of the body politic with the Swift Vets is an apt comparison.

I might add another key distinction- the Bush AWOL stories are a media-generated phenomenon for the most part, while the Kerry stories are from an independent group who has a beef with Kerry. The media reaction to the latter has been, until recently taking up Kerry’s defense, to ignore the claims.

No Wonder He Is Pissed

Monsieur Kerry today:

“I defended this country as a young man and I will defend it as president,” Kerry declared to some of the biggest applause of his half-hour speech in the Great Hall at Cooper Union.

Kerry then promised to tell the truth instead of “hiding behind front groups” — an apparent reference to attack ads by veterans who accuse Kerry of misstating his war experience in Vietnam…

“The Bush campaign and its allies,” Kerry told them, “have turned to the tactics of fear and smear because they can’t talk about jobs, health care, energy independence … real issues that matter.”

At least Kerry is now admitting Bush has some allies. I was worried this was going to become a unilateral speech. At any rate, the reason Kerry is so pissed off about the Swift Vets are not the charges themselves, but stylistic differences about hopw the charges are being presented. Kerry believes if you are going to smear someone, you do it yourself, openly, with the willing cooperation of the press.

How else can you explain this ‘PRESS RELEASE’:

But They Did Not Serve With Him

Drudge is stating that Kerry spoke with the Swift Vets the other day:

Dem presidential hopeful John Kerry personally phoned anti-Kerry swift boat vets, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Kerry reached out to Robert “Friar Tuck” Brant Cdr., USN (RET) Sunday night, just hours after former Sen. Bob Dole publicly challenged Kerry to apologize to veterans.

Brant was skipper of the #96 and # 36 boat and spent time with Kerry in An Thoi. Kerry and Brant slept in the same quarters, and Brant used to put Kerry back to bed at night when Kerry was sleepwalking.

Brant received a call from Kerry at his home in Virginia while he was watching the Olympics on TV.

The call lasted 10 minutes, sources tell DRUDGE.

KERRY: “Why are all these swift boat guys opposed to me?”

BRANT: “You should know what you said when you came back, the impact it had on the young sailors and how it was disrespectful of our guys that were killed over there.”

Why on earth would he call the skipper of another boat? I mean, they did not serve together because they were not on the same boat?

Right, Atrios? Oliver? Kevin? Matt? Jesse? That was the story, right? These swifties were not on the SAME boat as him, so they know nothing about him, right?

Like- they never bunked with him or anything? Right?

Reason #3 To Watch the Olympics

And this time it is character, and not eye candy.

Russian gymnast Alexei Nemov- A total CLASS ACT:

Russian gymnast Alexei Nemov tries to calm spectators booing during the men’s horizontal bar final at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games gymnastics competition, August 23, 2004. Russian gymnast Alexei Nemov’s score was booed by spectators for 10 minutes bringing the competition to a standstill until the gymnast appealed for the crowd to calm down. Nemov finished 5th.

Nemov should win a gold for Sportsmanship.

But just in case you needed some eye candy, there is always this reason to watch the Olympics:

Free Speech

by John Cole|  August 23, 200411:42 pm| 37 Comments

This post is in: Politics

One thing I have not made clear since all this Swift Boat bit got hot and heavy was my position on 527’s/,political speech, etc.

I think McCain-Feingold was one of the worst pieces of legislation to ever be drafted, passed, and signed by a President.

I think there should be no regulations on political speech outside already existing legislation regarding libel and slander. Let it all hang out- the voters aren’t stupid.

I think there should be no limits on hard money, and thus soft money would not even be an issue. Let’s make it all legal and call them both what they really are: money.

I think the only requirement should be immediate disclosure of who donated.

So do I disagree with Bush about 527’s? Yes and no. I would not ban any speech, but like Bush, I think everyone should know who is funding what.

Is Bush’s blanket condemnation flawed? Yes, but it is a helluva lot more honest and straightforward than the bullshit the Kerry/Edwards camp is running, and I find the ‘free speech’ condemnations of Bush’s statements laughable. Bush wants consistent rules in place (albeit egregiously flawed), Kerry wants to sit and choose which ads air and don’t air. And Bush’s position has a totalitarian edge?

What this really boils down to is that the Democrats finally have a group that is throwing the same sort of shit in their faces that they have thrown at the Republicans and Bush for as long as I can remember. Nothing has been beyond the pale for these guys, all done in order to ‘win back our country,’ or to ‘save democracy.’ I am under no such illusion that Republicans are saints. How many times have you heard Democrats say ‘We have to fight like Republicans’ before sinking to a new low?

And the revelations that Bush supporters have fundedthe campaign proves what? I never once thought that Texas natives Paul Begala and Dan Rather funded it. And the idea that a millionaire Republican in Texas somehow knows Karl Rove- SHOCKING!. Rove was only the biggest political operative in Texas for 30 years. Clearly this is proof that the Bush campaign is running the Swift Botas 527. Idiots.

But just for fun, let’s take one quick trip down memory lane for smear campaigns and ad campaigns by Democrats that were ‘above the belt.’

– The gay whisper campaigns about Lyndsey Graham in 2002. Woops, that wasn’t a whisper campaign:

Democratic Senate candidate Alex Sanders in South Carolina attacked pro-gay Republican former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York in a televised debate with his Republican opponent Lindsey Graham, saying that Giuliani

Kerry Joke

by John Cole|  August 23, 20049:00 pm| 3 Comments

This post is in: Humorous

I am sure this joke has seen many different incarnations, but I found it amusing:

Kerry was going to visit the Catholic National Cathedral outside Washington as part of his campaign. Kerry’s campaign manager made a visit to the Cardinal and said to him, “We’ve been getting a lot of bad publicity among Catholics because of Kerry’s position on abortion and the like. We’d gladly make a contribution to the church of $100,000 if during your sermon you’d say John Kerry is a saint.”

The Cardinal thinks it over for a moment and agrees to do it.

Kerry shows up, and as the Mass progresses the Cardinal begins his homily. “John Kerry is petty, a self absorbed hypocrite and a nit-wit.
He is a liar, a cheat, and a thief. He is the worst example of a Catholic I’ve ever personally known. But compared to Ted Kennedy, John Kerry is a
saint.”
