Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Let me file that under fuck it.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Come on, man.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“If President Bush Ate a Baby…”

Reason #12274282 why I hate protests/rallies, regardless the issue:

“I’ll tell you why I’m here,” the MoveOn woman said. Then she suddenly began to scream at the top of her lungs. “BABIES DIED OF DEHYDRATION IN MY COUNTRY! BABIES!”

“Support our president,” the Bush woman said.

“Supporting the president is great, but supporting the people and the Constitution is more important!” the MoveOn woman said. “THE CONSTITUTION AND THE BABIES ARE DYING! IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY PRESIDENT, AND YOU KNOW THAT IN YOUR HEART!”

“Support our president,” the Bush woman said. And then she turned away and added, “I have a right to say what I think.”

At that point, a crowd was beginning to gather around the two women. Another woman from MoveOn came up and pulled her screaming colleague away. “Don’t make this the event,” she told her.

The crowd kept chanting. “IMPEACH BUSH! IMPEACH BUSH! FIRE BROWN! FIRE BROWN!” But off to the side, another voice was added to the general noise. A man named Kristinn Taylor, an active member of the conservative group FreeRepublic in Washington, stood off to the side with a handmade sign that said, SHAME ON MOVEON — EXPLOITING KATRINA VICTIMS. Some of the protesters moved toward him to begin what might be called a high-minded debate.

“YOU’RE AN IDIOT!” a woman yelled at Taylor after Taylor blamed New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin for failing to evacuate the city.

Just then, a man walked up to Taylor and said, “If George Bush ate a baby, would you defend him?”

“That’s absurd,” Taylor answered.

“Well, that’s kind of where you’re at right now,” the man said.

Byron York describes the entire silly event(s).

Some Moveon lady is an idiot so there can be no protests ever again.

Anyone from Free Republic is an apologist. Bush can do no wrong in their eyes. That was the point of the other moveon idiot.

Freepers and some of the move on people are just two sides of the same coin. Except that move on got something like 144,000 beds for refugees.

Actually, the key exchange, to me, is this one:

“Well, don’t you think there’s a reason we all hate him?” the man continued.

“Yes,” Taylor answered. “Because you are all pathological in your hatred of him.”

“Of course,” the man said, as a few more people began laughing. “And why is that?”

“Because you’re a bunch of loony liberals!” Taylor answered, as everyone cracked up.

To the Taylors of the world, hating Bush is mindstate that is simply a pathology, which means nobody who is anti-Bush needs to be taken at all seriously. Which means any and all criticism aimed at Bush is immediately null and void, as though there can be no reasonable criticism of him. Which, of course, is completely stupid.

Goddamn right I hate Bush. I didn’t when he first took office. I didn’t hate him after 9/11. But I absolutely loathe him now because of his utter incompetence, inability to correct mistakes, and pigheaded stubbornness. It’s not just because I decided out of the clear blue sky that I’d like to hate the president, as this doofus Taylor and his ilk would like to think. I hate him because of what he has done to this country. I’m not just flinging contempt toward the White House because it seems like a fun thing to do; George Bush has earned it through his decisions, policies, and actions (or lack thereof). If he wasn’t such an embarassment of a president, I wouldn’t feel this way. But all the Taylors of the country–and sadly, there are a lot of them–think is, “Someone not like Bush? But that unpossible!”

That said, I agree that protests, for the most part, are pretty stupid. As is going to a protest to protest the protest.

    Mark Steyn remarked today that:

“I wake up to hundreds of e-mails, as I’m sure you do, from angry lefties every morning. And we know that they’re actually very good at using words of four letters and all the rest of it. What they’re not so good at is actually coming up with practical proposals, and practical solutions about how you handle these things. ”

He must be making that up? Can’t be true.

Is this THE Kristenn Taylor of Free Republic? He’s like famous and really dedicated, devoted is a better word. A True Believer.

These two groups and all their ilk should be given some place to go have at each other till they drop. Anyone ever see that ancient Star Trek where the anti-matter Joshua and the matter Joshua wound up fighting in some other dimension for all eternity, but the two alternate universes were saved?

Just then, a man walked up to Taylor and said, “If George Bush ate a baby, would you defend him?”

That is absurd — course he would. And he’d smear those who criticized Bush for it. After all, the baby was either an imminent threat or was giving aid and comfort to the enemy, or both. Anyway, the baby’s gone now, and we shouldn’t play the blame game at such a critical juncture. There will be plenty of time for that after Bush is done digesting the baby. And the reports of Bush eating the baby were poorly sourced, even if they did turn out to be true, and the reporter who wrote the story is on an anti-Bush jihad. Words have consequences, you know. There’s riots going on right now among babies because of this story. And people died in these riots (other babies, in fact). Why do you hate America?

Newsflash: the baby’s mother has aligned herself with Michael Moore and MoveOn.org. She’s nothing but a mouth piece for the far left. John Cole has several damaging quotes she made about Israeli support for baby-eating, all of them taken out of context.

Wait, another newsflash: The parents of other babies eaten by Bush are launching a “You don’t speak for me tour.” They are proud that their babies died for a noble cause — the cause of sating the president’s hunger.

During the first Gulf War I first became aware of this phenomenon (I was too young to know anything about the anti-hippie stuff in 1971). A co-worker in the cubicle next to me called the “yes to war” rally the anti-anti-war-protest-protest.

The term has stuck with me ever since. When you see one of these, you can be sure that much absurdity has already occurred, and that much more is on the way.

    Great stuff, Dougj.

Check out this post from a school teacher in NJ. The funny thing about morons like this is that they are typically total cowards.

Al-Qaeda now knows that Homeland Security has squandered millions, perhaps billions in useless exercises and programs than have fallen flat when reality struck as in what has occurred in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast regions. A WMD attack must be coordinated and launched against two distinct targets, preferably East and West (Left) Coast cities. A nuke or two, even if low yield, will devastate America. A Hobbesian “war of all against all” will emerge as the criminal, opportunistic, and seditious elements strike out. Expect heavily armed and infuriated conservatives to launch a cleansing war against the traitors. The armed will mow down the mostly unarmed segments, especially those elements that devoted forty-plus years to anti-American hatred to destroy this country. Should the likes of Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Michael Parenti, Michael Moore, Ward Churchill, Dennis [sic] Raimondo, et al. act out their sedition in a just-nuked America, expect their bodies to be found shot full of holes. Expect gun battles at banks, food stores, ATMs, gas stations, and outside hospitals. Leftist professors will be strung up. It will be every man, woman, and child for themselves.

I’d love for this guy to come after me. His students wouldn’t recognise him after I was through.

    GT meowed:
If I was trying to actualy critisize I’d have called you on the carpet for this..

I think the lady who kept insisting “support the President” is much much more dangerous. Her kind of ignorant servitude is what allowed Germans to support Hiltler. Please note: I don’t mean to campare Bush to Hilter.

Noooooo.. you’re comparing Bush supporters to German Nazis. That’s much better. _ Actually, most Germans weren’t Nazi’s. However, they did allow the Nazi’s to take power and didn’t resist in most cases even when it became clear what was happening. So no, you’re wrong. I was not comparing Bush supporters to Nazi’s.
Take another swing GT but remember, three strikes and you’re out.

Or if you don’t, do you mind if I do so?

By all means, please do. I’m glad you like them. Writing these has been a great way to let off steam about the hurricane and the way all Bush cares about is the politics of it — which I find horribly upsetting as an American (and longtime Republican).

President Bush had to eat that baby. The INS was going to send the baby back to his father in Cuba, and this was the only way the baby could stay in the United States.

    Why do you hate freedom?

It was an act of mercy. The baby was already in its last throes.

“BABIES DIED OF DEHYDRATION IN MY COUNTRY! BABIES!”

The awful thing, this is true. Yet Byron York thinks it’s funny.

There’s nothing like an impartial observer. And York is nothing like an impartial observer.

At least Bush had a plan to get rid of the baby. Where’s the Democrats’ plan?

It is very rare that I actually laugh out loud at something I see on the net. It’s a bit weird to be sitting in my office laughing, after all. I truly LOLed at this.

David Broder has a piece on baby-eating in today’s Washington Post, called “Nation Divided on Baby Eating”. Here’s an excerpt

“President Bush’s supporters call eating the baby an act of heroism, his detractors, an act of barbarism. The truth is certainly somewhere in the middle.”

Why post about this? That’s as silly as the topic you are posting about.
Are you that idea-deprived you can’t find something important to blog about?

    Why post about this?

It shows the left at its shrillest?

You’re right, Nash, I don’t think Bush would eat a baby. But Dick Cheney might. And then he’d say he felt good about it afterwards and that a lot of people had told him it was about time someone in the White House ate a baby.
