I am not dead, but I feel like I might be soon. I do not know what I have, but I just got hammered on Tuesday. I woke up fine, by 10 am started to feel bad, by noon felt worse, and by 2 had to go home and go to bed. It has gotten worse since, and I feel like I have one foot in the grave the other on a banana peel. I have scheduled a Dr’s. appt. for tomorrow if I do not feel better (I try to wait a couple days and do these things without drugs).

My secretary said there was a bad bug going around, and that if I caught it I would “spend half your time wondering if you were dying the other half wishing you would.” She was right.

At any rate, thank goodness for Tim F. Otherwise, all you would read here today is me bitching about being sick. Hopefully I will be back tomorrow or Saturday, b ut until then, I am going to go OD on Green Death Nyquil, Tylenol, and hot tea with lemon.

Since this is your seventh siege of illness in the last year, you must be hanging around the wrong kind of crowd….perhaps the ever-growing number of radical lefties on this site are infecting you with more than just bad ideas.

Hope you feel better soon and get well quickly!

I’ve just gotten over this, John. It was 3-4 days of hell, then 5-6 more days of wondering why I couldn’t get rid of the cough, take a full breath, or feel like I could accomplish anything.

Someone else who had it told me this, and I didn’t believe them. Believe me. Plan on at least a week of being out of it.

Well, that right there pretty much describes the last three weeks of my wife’s existance.

Get plenty of rest, and by all means, see a doctor if you get one of those lingering coughs.

    Umm. . . the “hammered” part of “I just got hammered on tuesday” . . . . .

Do you mean “I foolishly went out on Tuesday and got wrenched, torqued, pissed or drunk?” or do you mean “somehow the illness saved up for one big strike?”

Just wanna clarify. I’ve experienced both.

I’ll add my wishes for you to get well soon, John. This sounds like the real deal flu: typically makes people feel they’ve been run over by a truck and can’t get out of bed. You have my sympathy.

Hey, all you posters who can’t take a full breath – get to your doctors! An inhaler, or at least an effective cough syrup, can avert lots of misery.

Hey, I gotta put in a vote for Stormy’s suggestion here. Hot grog is always good.

Also suggest lots and lots of chicken soup. Protein, liquid, vitamins…put a lot of pepper in it to help clear the sinuses.

Have also had good luck with peppermint tea.

And you could always do my version which is knock-myself-out-with-melatonin-and-sleep-the-damn-thing-off. Sleep is always good.

I have scheduled a Dr’s. appt. for tomorrow if I do not feel better (I try to wait a couple days and do these things without drugs).

Last year on a Wednesday I felt bad, didn’t go to work. Didn’t go to work on thursday either. Felt better friday morning and tried to go to work and felt horrible by noon.

Waited until monday to go to doctor. (Cause I hate doctors, and hoped I’d get better myself)

Turns out I had pneumonia.(If you run a fever, it goes away and then comes back… go to doctor immediately, especially if you are also coughging)

Took the whole next week to recover from that on drug therapy.

So I was out for about 12 days.

This is what HSA’s are designed to encourage, rather than going to the doctor too soon and recovering quicker, cause you know, that might be bad.

Will say this though. Doctors are amazing. If they had not had that pill to take, I probably would have been in bed for the next two months and more than likely died. So I can imagine what my great great grandparents went through.

Yes, stay in bed, have some nice garlicky chicken soup, pet the cat, and remember that this, too, shall pass.

Next winter, try to get Cold-FX from Canada. It’s a ginseng extract that has real studies in real refereed journals showing that it’s effective at shortening colds. I felt like hot crap on wheels last night, but it looks as if I’ll be as good as new by tomorrow.

The Cold-FX site claims that several double blind studies using placebos and the real medication have been done, but they didn’t provide links. However, via PubMed, I found this CMAJ study which looks like decent evidence for some reduction in frequency and duration of colds via the use of Cold-FX.

The article also references this other double blind study with placebos: J Am Geriatr Soc. 2004 Jan;52(1):13-9.

    True. Same with cough drops.

decongestants work. But the cough suppresants don’t really do anything.

They say the reason why cough drops work is that they help keep your throat moist so it doesn’t feel as irritated. You can just buy hard candy like lemon drops and accomplish the same thing.

An interesting thing… The Hall’s drops make me physically sick.
