Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

“woke” is the new caravan.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Come on, man.

Bark louder, little dog.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I Was Right

Yglesias:

In his debut as a CNN commentator, former White House press secretary Tony Snow says it’s unfair for John McCain to criticize Bush’s handling of Katrina, and suggests that Dick Cheney could be a big political asset. This seems like right-wing hackery so egregious as to be counterproductive to the cause.

This is even better than I expected. If Snow doesn’t get the message soon his loyalty to the old boss will be a pain in the ass to Republicans trying to get out from under the president’s loser shadow.

God I hope for a panel discussion on Katrina.

***Update***

And why not some Keith Olbermann-style Special Commentaries? Sample topics: privatizing Social Security, Terri Schiavo.

Katrina? Bush caused the hurricane? He befuddled the mayor and governor and police into a state of utter panic and incompetence?

Anyway, don’t expect the Republican party to be taking advice from your self or Mr. Yglesias any time soon.

Hard to believe Snow doesn’t know the required message for McSame is ‘I’m not Bush’. Can he really be a true believer? Maybe he’s angling for the Bush Presidential Library (is Shame-atorium a word?) directorship. Won’t be much competition.

Yes Tony, please tell how great Social Security would be now if your old boss had been successful in turning over hundreds of billions more to those responsible for the current financial mess. Details please.

Oh, we know the Republican party would not take advice if their lives depended on it. They know they are always right, no matter how wrong they are.

If anyone has to remind you of the mess that “Heckuvajob” Brownie did, and the idiot who complemented him for the clusterfuck, then you are a right wing nutjob.

Snow job is back shoveling snow again because he must have been running low on cash. Oh well, shoveling snow is lighter work than carrying water. But it is still moving moisture for the ’cause’. Snow would have made a great right wing congresscritter. He can look you straight in the eye and sincerely lie nonstop. The right laps that stuff up.

They believe. Just what they believe, I am still not sure of, but they will believe anything they are told as long as it is coming from another right wing nut job.

Todays Republican Party, an echo chamber of lies.

It’s unfair for McCain to criticize Bush on his handling of Katrina………because Bush brought him a birthday cake while the storm was hitting so everything should be cool.

Come on Tony, it’s unfair. Please tell us why it’s so unfair. Is it because the response went so well? Is it because there was nothing your old boss could have possibly done (act of God and all)? I think we should get a second opinion on the fairness. Let’s ask McCain’s “illegitimate black baby” if it’s fair. What say?

Just truthful. A female Democrat and a black Democrat, both close to the situation, and both in positions of political power, both clueless dunces, and both blaming everything but their own incompetence. I guess the national scene isn’t much different, is it?

BTW, Olbermann-like “speshul komenteries”… maybe Snow should advocate the bitch-slapping of Hillary, too? Although he probably wouldn’t get the same pass that the Plastic Orange Guy has gotten on that little sexist rant.

I hope Snow convinces McCain that Cheney would be an asset and McCain names Cheney as his Veep.

All Snow has to do is convince McCain that Cheney would be a good person to consult in choosing a VP; Cheney will name himself.

I guess the national scene isn’t much different, is it?

Nope–Bush matches the standard set by the fourth-poorest state in the U.S. Heck of a job.

Well, ‘twould seem wee have visitors from outer wingnuttia, where IQs are often confused with shoe sizes.

Bush and his administration left dead bodies lying in the streets of an American city for days after the hurricane left. Not that you right-wingers would give a rat’s ass, though, because they weren’t white.

CONservatives. Every goddamn day they help demonstrate that their movement should be renamed to the Popular Front for the Preservation of White Supremacy.

So Person of Choler and D-Chance both agree that, in times of natural disaster, and people are dying left and right, a sitting president’s duty is to sit back and eat cake.

Would they feel the same way under a competent administration?

Am I wasting my time? All signs point to yes.

Katrina? Bush caused the hurricane? He befuddled the mayor and governor and police into a state of utter panic and incompetence?

Well no he probably didn’t in the alternate universe that you live in, but here in our universe people no longer cling to the tired old strawmen cliches that have pretty much been disproven. Lets see the primary disaster agency is who? FEMA and that is controlled by who? thats right the national government

The fall-down-funny aspect of the wingnuts’ comments is that if a Democratic president had failed to prevent 9-11 (“Bin-Laden determined to strike US), Katrina, and the war in Iraq they’d be calling for his or her execution. Remember all of the harrumphing when Clinton sent US troops to Bosnia? Multiply that ten-thousand times and you’d be close to what the peanut gallery would be spouting now about Iraq.

Then again, isn’t it convenient that Tony Snow is there to continue as a mouthpiece for for the most unpopular administration in history, providing spew which McCain can then publicly and strenuously disown. What a maverick he is!

Snow’s kind of an anomaly amongst his news peers and the wingnuts. He seems to actually BELIEVE the shit he spews. I mean, the rest of them are just in it for the usual cynical reasons. Tony, I think, is a believer. The guy’s got Kool-Aid in his veins.

I think that’s maybe why he comes off as somewhat likable, despite his grotesque views. He’s not a phony…just insane.

Please, dear Lord, let this administration, Snow, and the entire right-wing (what’s left of it) keep defending their handling of anything, from oil prices to Hurricane Katrina. Even better would be Tony’s fantastic suggestion to use Dick Cheney, America’s most unpopular human being/vampire, as a “political asset”.

If the Republicans follow all these sane and well-thought-through suggestions, a dead dog running as the Democratic candidate for President could win it.

I actually felt a fleeting moment of pity for McSame after reading the commentary by Snow. With friends like him, you really don’t need enemies.

This is still part of the deal he agreed to when he got to be W.H. press sec.

Snow will fellate Bush & Co. until he thinks they’re well lubed and happy. Then he’ll move on to the next gooper in line. Gotta service those first who made him and gave him everything he has. He knows who buttered his bread.

…their movement should be renamed to the Popular Front for the Preservation of White Supremacy.

A succinct description if any I’ve ever heard of the GOP in particular and conservativism in general.

What the hell do people think these conservatives are trying to conserve?

Hint: It ain’t the envrionment/energy/economy/leadership in science and education/privacy/habeas corpus or our national reputation or our former moral standing in the world, or our ability to face real threats to our national security.

So what are these conservatives actually interested in conserving?

Well none of the above, obviously. But I’d say conserving the power and wealth of their own class tops their list, and from this there’s no doubt that’s related to preservation of white supremacy.
