We are aware of all internet traditions.

I really should read my own blog.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The willow is too close to the house.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

This blog will pay for itself.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Breaking Hard

Hillary is predicted to win WV.

No shit. All that matters are the margins, and they don’t really even matter. I guess we all get to pretend for another week that this is an actual race, still, and we get to keep playing the “why won’t white people vote for Obama” game that gives Hillary supporters comfort in defeat.

Good times. At least the national media is out of West Virginia. Thank God for that.

*** Update ***

Let no one ever say that Hillary is lacking in chutzpah. I am paraphrasing, of course, but this speech that was dubbed the greatest speech ever has so far consisted of “Visit my website and give me money, and I won this little state, so the supers better reverse the results of the other 49 states and give me the nomination.” It is pretty awesome stuff. I am really moved.

Where the fuck did I put my foam brick?

*** Update #2 ***

Is it just me, or is it a bit obscene for Clinton to talk about the ties that bind us together after spending two weeks carving up the electorate along racial and financial lines.

This speech is nothing more than her begging the supers. This is the greatest speech ever?

Feh.

*** Update #3 ***

Chris Matthews is impressed how delusional Hillary is.

*** Update #4 ***

Boone County, home of Jesco White, the Dancing Outlaw, is breaking for Hillary 80-13 (it is the county directly south of Charleston).

Waaaah! Why can’t you admit that West Virginia is the only state that matters in this contest and Obama’s loss is a clear sign that he’s a luzer and needs to drop out?!

    /Hillsteric

Oh well, she needs more donations to dig herself out of that debt hole. I wouldn’t want her to wind up PIMPING Bill at Indiana’s RACE tracks.

    A STUNNING defeat for Obama….

and Obama is in very big trouble with these voters — voters who are very similar to large parts of voters in PA and Ohio.

No Democrat since 1916 has won the General Election without carrying West Virginia.

When is Obama going to quit this race, so the Democrats can have a candidate who can take the White House. Obama can even blame all those horrible people who cling to gun and god, and won’t accept his utterly transcendent wonderfulness from which all blessings flow….

Obama should quit now, and work on figuring out how to connect with these voters. Given that he’s competing against an upper-middle class, suburban female who graduated from Wellesley and Yale Law, its not like he’s at some kind of disadvantage because of his race — these people are just as likely to vote against someone like Hillary Clinton as they are to vote against an African American.

Isn’t it kind of odd that CNN’s online Election results called WV for Clinton in the Democratic race right away, but have not presumed to call the Republican race for McCain? Is there really any chance that Huckabee and/or Paul could spoil WV for McCain?

Taking a look at the exit polls, I’d say some of it is they love them some Bill Clinton in WV.

85% of Hillary voters said he was important.

That meshes with what John’s said about how the Clintons are popular and how they like the familiar.

The gender breakdown is pretty interesting, too.

Seems to me that Hillary’s supporters argument seems to be these days:

“Hillary is such a bad candidate, that if someone prefers her to Obama that’s a sign that Obama can’t beat McCain.”

Essentially, she’s establishing herself as the minimum standard of Democrat who has a chance of beating McCain … if someone actually prefers her to someone else, that someone else must be therefore unelectable.

    Helluva sales pitch!

I’m registered as an independent here in WV, and got a mailer from the Democratic party reminding me that independents could vote in in the Dem primary. Went down to cast my vote, and discovered that, yes, I can in fact vote in the Dem primary – on a provisional ballot that will be reviewed by the canvassing board later “to determine whether or not your vote can be counted”, according to the information slip I was given. Don’t know how many independents there are in WV, but their votes won’t be showing up tonight.

I finally figured this thing out. At last it all makes sense.

Think about it. Imagine if as a prelude to an invasion, aliens from another planet disguise one of their own as a presidential candidate with a bizarre but shrewd campaign strategy.

First, she builds up an aura of invincibility. Then, bizarrely, she ignores the first contest because its a caucus. So she loses. Then she cries when she looks like she’s been defeated. The pundits itch to declare a winner.

BANG! She picks up the women’s vote!
BANG! She picks up the anti-media vote!

She rides the momentum right to November!

Then at the last minute, after carefully laying the grondwork, she picks up the massive and crucial male adulterer vote! Bill and Hillary are back in the White House!

Then, one night at 3 AM, while we’re sleeping peacefully, she places the military on standby while aliens swoop down to steal our brains and eyeballs.

    Have a good night.

you predicted 2 to 1? LIAR.

Two months ago, I predicted Obama would get blown out (the piolls at the time were 55-27) and that race would be an issue, and you and that idiot Armando claimed I was asserting everyoen in WV is racist. Here is what I said:

Before the stupidity in the comments section gets too out of hand, let me be clear. I am not claiming that anyone who refuses to vote for Obama is a racist. I just am not. But there are a number of things working against Obama in WV, and chief among them is the presence of a number of people who will, under no circumstances, vote for a black man. Particularly one named Hussein Obama. Hell, a cab driver I use occasionally has twice told me that he applied for the job as trapper at the White House, because come January there is going to be a coon or a beaver there. Not only does he feel comfortable telling me that, but he has told me at least twice. Why? Because I am sure it gets a lot of yuks with other passengers.

While there is racism present to varying levels in every state, what makes WV different is that there is not a presence of a large AA community who will enthusiastically balance out that vote like there are in other states. Add to it that WV is a Hillary Clinton kind of state- lots of blue-collar union types who are comfortable working with and voting the party machine. As the Clinton’s are an established name, the Clinton’s are viewed as the party candidate.

Again, I am not claiming a refusal to vote for Obama makes one racist. I am claiming that, in WV, at least, there will be a number of people who refuse to vote for him because they are in fact racist. That isn’t a smear, that is just the truth. If you can not deal with it, well, that is on you. It is also why people like me have been frequently upset throughout this campaign when we have seen what we perceive to be dogwhistles coming from the Clinton camp. Whipping up this sort of sentiment is, in my book, inexcusable.

Funny thing, too, because Lukasiak seems to have changed his toon in the past two months. Guess who Lukasiak was claiming played the race card then?

    Clinton:

There are three kinds of “racism”, IMHO.

The first is the kind who won’t vote for a “person who happens to be black” These are people who won’t vote for a black candidate no matter what.

The second is the kind who won’t vote for a “person who identifies as black”. These are the people who will vote for a black candidate as long as he isn’t “too black”—as long as he “transcends race”, or is “non-threatening”, etc.

The third kind is the most pernicious—its the people who claim to be without racial bias, but on a subconscious level are biased. As a result, the same information about two candidates who are virtually identical in terms of their overall record and positions, but are of different races, will be processed differently on a subconscious level, and result in different conscious decisionmaking.

As a result, if candiate A is better on health care, and candidate B is better on Iraq, if candidate A is white and candidate B is black,, then health care policy suddenly becomes the crucial determinant in how a person vote. And if candidate A is black, and candidate B is white, Iraq becomes the more important issue.

The second kind of racist is the kind that responds to “Obama is a muslim” crap.

Its the third kind of prejudice that is the real problem, because it represents the people who are affected by “dog whistle” campaigning—and even by campaign tactics that aren’t even intentionally ‘racist.’

Clinton’s 3AM ad falls into the final category—it would have been a lot less effective if her opponent was a white male with the same record/experience as Obama, because the question being asked would “do you want an ‘unprepared’ white man making these decisions”—and white people, especially white males, would have been less affected by the question.

    Just go away, you hack.

.I think the margins do matter: if Clinton doesn’t win in the John Cole prophesied range of 28% people are going to talk.

.No non-incumbent Republican ever carried West Virginia until George W Bush in 2000. So much for past being predictive.

.As a Non-Republican/Non-Democrat I got to confirm the incumbency of a couple of Board of Education members today. I was happy to see (and hear!) the ‘paper trail’ being generated on the touch screen voting machine.

I mean, I understand why you got on the Hillary bandwagon when she was talking about “leadership”, but that whole schtick has been proven to be a big fat lie—you don’t show “leadership” by having your supporters and surrogate accuse ANOTHER DEMOCRAT of being a sexist. But despite the evidence that Hillary’s entire campaign is built on a lie, her supporters stick with her…. which means that they are just as bad as the GOP has been for the last 35+ years of exploiting sexism for political gain.

John, Do you think that WV would support a woman candidate for president?

I have been saying this for a while now, but no one seems to listen. My sense is that neither Hillary nor Obama would win WV in the fall.

Bill Clinton would, if he were running again, but I don’t think Hillary or Obama will (despite Hillary leading in polls by 5% over McCain in WV).

My feel for the state is we are just a much more culturally conservative state than we were 15-20 years ago. Additionally, union membership just ain’t what it used to be. A lot of the things that made this a safe Democratic state for so many years are just not in place anymore, and I simply can not overstate how big the GOP gun campaign against Gore in 2000 hurt national Democrats.

I really don’t know if a woman could win, but my sense is just very few Democrats could. I see WV as a safe Republican seat for a while.

    Fuck West Vagina.

IF the real reason Hillary! won is because of her White Power dynamic. West Virginia exists because it seceded from the confederacy, so they’re generally on the right side of things. West Virginia, though Senator Byrd *was* a racist, brings in the money to that state and thus they have fine roads, bridges, and technology. Byrd’s a superdemocrat and I prefer to think that… who did he endorse? Any of them? The state is his and… Even though it is something like 99% white, Byrd has more ties to the Clintons than BO.

They relate to her…) but they won’t elect a supposed Black ‘elitist’ candidate who’s credentials are comparable if not better, who put himself through school, has a fraction of the baggage and achieved some pretty impressive stuff without marrying a political rising star, etc…

Dude, sound off and just come out and fucking say it. You believe too much of the country including maybe YOU is still too bigoted to vote for a smart, ambitious black man. I really don’t want to see Paul banned. It’s heartbreaking to see what’s happened to him. I’m heartsick reading him here, because that’s not the Paul Lukasiak I knew over at Salon’s Table Talk back in the 1990s.

I just don’t get his white-hot frothing hatred of Obama. I really don’t — that’s not how the Paul I knew talked about people, even George W. Bush when he was looking up Bush’s service records.

It can’t be Rezko: Rezko had contacts all across both parties, including with Hillary Clinton’s buddies John Burgess of IPA and LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as well as Rod Blagojevich and Bob Kjellander, Rove’s good friend. (The Rove/US Attorney scandal connection means that even if there was anything to the scandal rumors you keep trying to push — and funny how Obama wasn’t put on trial along with Rezko the way people like you kept implying would happen — the Rove connection will make this kryptonite to the national media from now on.)

It can’t be Wright — not when Hillary has her own preacher issues with Doug Coe. (And really, I’m disappointed in Hillary in taking a man who had stood with her and Bill in their hour of need back in September of 1998 and repaid him by using him to attack somebody else. It’s grimly reminiscent of how they used Sister Souljah back in 1992, and Donna Brazile warned them not to do it.)

Is it fear that Obama’s skin color will keep him from the nomination? That fear isn’t held by anyone watching the huge voter turnouts in the Democratic primaries and caucuses over the past four months — greater than the GOP ones, even when the GOP nomination was still being seriously contested.
Paul needs to visit Poblano’s site for a reality check. And then go out and get some fresh air. Come to think of it, so will I, once I finish this sentence.

Hillary sucks. Here’s what an overwhelming win looks like:

    Obama 79%
    Clinton 17%

Just need a state full of black voters like Idaho. Thank God Hillary dropped out after that defeat. There’s no way someone could carry on after that…

Obama predicted 12%…. looks like he was about 20 points off…

Got a cite for that? Your own ass doesn’t count.

This goes back to just after Super Tuesday, when the Obama campaign leaked its vote and delegate predictions for the next four months of contests. They were almost eerily accurate – and the errors came by underestimating Obama’s support – for about a month and a half, but have been less accurate in the last few weeks. For some reason, Pup Tent Democrat seems to have moved his particular goal posts to where anytime Obama underperforms that old piece of paper he’s losing; I’d guess it’s a common meme in the Hillosphere.

Still, not so offensive a talking point as most of theirs, so I guess we should be glad we got it rather than more of the White Power stuff.

don’t show “leadership” by having your supporters and surrogate accuse ANOTHER DEMOCRAT of being a sexist.

You do, however, show leadership by hiring a sleazy incompetent like Mark Penn to run your campaign, then continuing to rain money on him even as he drives your candidacy off a cliff.

it followed months of Obama campaign race-pimping

You know, I’m not sure that black voters choosing to vote, on their own, for a black candidate is “race-pimping”. Let’s ask Rush Limbaugh, he would know.

but if you’d rather lose with Obama, than have a far more knowledgeable, experienced, and competent person on the ballot, fine.

Oh yeah, she’s so knowledgeable that she didn’t need to bother reading our intel on Iraq before voting to authorize Bush to invade. How competent she was, to trust such an obvious idiot and sociopath with the world’s most powerful war machine.

The weirdest part has been listening to Wolf Blitzer wonder all day if tonight’s margin would somehow change the dynamics of the race. He acts as if a week ago today nobody had any clue that Hillary was still going to win West Virginia in a landslide.

Looking back at the numbers, the polls, Clinton’s kitchen sink, Obama’s ride it out attitude, and the famous “spreadsheet”, it is obvious that all of the insiders must have known since super Tuesday that Obama was the nominee. The last 3 months have been all about the pundits trying to get rich out of creating a horse race and the Clinton campaign being paniced, desparate.

Talk about tough – how tough has it been for Obama to grin and bear it while the Hillary campaign and the media came to terms with reality?

So it was a real accomplishment for you to win West Virginia, which is only dead last in the country in percentage of people with a college degree (and barely above half the national average). Clinton’s 3AM ad falls into the final category—it would have been a lot less effective if her opponent was a white male with the same record/experience as Obama, because the question being asked would “do you want an ‘unprepared’ white man making these decisions”—and white people, especially white males, would have been less affected by the question.

That’s not true, because Obama’s ‘experience’ is nothing but, and I didn’t see it at first and neither did a lot of people. I was just as you are, John Cole, saying that ‘experience’ had gotten us into a lot of problems, etc etc — but let’s not sacrifice hard qualifications as a criteria for President simply because we had experienced, but mal-intentioned, people running Washington for the last 8 years. Senator Clinton really is more qualified. She had an in-depth role in policy formulation for 2 Clinton terms. She’s been a Senator for the last 8 years and is on the Foreign Relations Committee. She really would be ‘ready to go on day one’ and would not have to learn on the job.

What’s more, many of the preconceptions and views you hold of Hillary are inaccurate or the result of media fantasy. I know I’m not going to win you over, but try to remember that you spent the 1990’s as a Republican, and didn’t see some of the controversies that turned you against her in the same light.

I didn’t write what you are referring to- P. Lukasiak did. Kinda makes what you wrote look pretty fucking stupid, because I assure you that Lukasiak did not spend the 90’s as a Clinton-hating Republican.

Jesus, is blockquoting really kicking your ass that hard?

Yeah, Justin, how did that policy making work out? Oh, wait, what was it? Oh yeah. Health care. And she butchered it. And she really has done such a kick ass job as a Senator, what with her flag burning amendment, that whole war thing, and oh so many others. Please. If you want the ‘experience’ route, McCain would beat them both hands down. And guess what. Obama has a whole lot more experience than (gasp) Abe Lincoln. Does that make him a better candidate than Lincoln? No. But it shows how silly this whole ‘experience’ argument is.

    Pathetic.

small republican states don’t matter. I’ve never said that states like delaware and rhode Island and vermont and new hampshire don’t matter. West Virginia is a swing state… I mean, not only did Bill Clinton win it twice, Dukakis even won there.

But the reasl disaster for Obama in West Virginia isn’t the margins…its the fact that he didn’t show up there. He basically sent people in West Virginia — and people like them — the message “I don’t care about your concerns, your lives or your votes.”

exactly. And that is why Obama is gonna lose in November. Obama sent a great big “fuck you” to West Virginians, and everyone who is like them, by not taking the opportunity to introduce himself to WV voters.

You know, I’m a native Washingtonian, and I seem to recall Hillary losing DC worse than Obama lost West Virginia, and not doing a whole hell of a lot of campaigning around here, despite the fact that her HQ is right across the river. Pretty much sent the message to the most reliably Democratic jurisdiction in the country that she didn’t give care about our concerns, our lives, or our votes.

Oh, yes, Hillary is so brave to campaign in a state where she was expected to win by a massive margin. Where was she in DC? Oh, i forgot, Hillary prefers to campaign in states like Michigan, where she couldn’t even win all of the votes when she was the ONLY candidate on the ballot, a point you folks seem to ignore. If Clinton can barely squeak past ‘Uncommitted,’ how can she possibly win the general election?

As to winning West Virginia, sure, Dukakis won it. And still LOST the general election. Fat lot of good it did him, hmmm? You are just being stupid, you, in your own words, ‘sack of shit.’

Oh, and as for Bill, who I voted for twice, the man couldn’t even win more than 49% of the vote against two of the weakest Republican candidates in recent memory. And yet, you hold him up as some sort of beacon of glory. Why? He was NEVER the choice of a MAJORITY of Americans. Or do you, in your silly little world, forget that as you describe the Clinton years as some lost utopia?

    compare that to….

West Virginia. The only state that day. No contests between the previous tuesday (when only 2, not 22, states were in play) and West Virginia.

When or if Paul comes to his senses, he’s going to regret the many, many ill-advised posts he’s made here and elsewhere. He is simply not the same person I knew over at Table Talk. That Paul Lukasiak would never act out like this, not even against George W. Bush — and Paul spent most of 2000 and 2001 researching Bush’s military service or near-complete lack thereof. Canadian observer here.

For a party that wanted the Supreme Court to rule on 500 “shards” the Dems seem very sanguine about writing off the millions of their supporters that voted in snowy Michigan and sunny Florida. As an outside observer it beggars belief that the millions of Democrats in those two HUGE, IMPORTANT states are going to be disenfranchised because of the insanity of a few of their states leaders. You CANNOT punish millions for the sins of a few – unless of course you believe in the self confessed mass murdering father of a son of a virgin – in which case not connecting to reality is an easy stretch.

A backroom deal that partly seats some of those states representatives at the convention is equally appalling. They BOTH must have meaningful votes and they must have them soon.

Neither Obama nor Clinton are nearly as important as are the members of the party. The party is either democratic or it isn’t – your call.

Personally, I think either of these two would be a million times better than McBush and I can’t see anyway that America could vote for 4 more years of Republican lies, sleaze, war and death.

Mylegacy, Florida sought to be a player by going outside the rules. When they were called on it, they blamed the republican control of the state put it out of their hands. That is, until they were found to be complicit in the sham via video tape.

Michigan is a whole ‘nuther story, but they screwed up too. Even Hillary campaign members approved of the sanctions against the states. MacAuliffe even threatened Carl Levin with sanctions in 2004, so they are no strangers to how the game is played.

Rewarding them now by making them kingmakers when every other state followed the rules would be wrong and set a poor precedent. Next election, it would be a free for all as to who goes first, and we would be starting the mess a year before the election.

Maybe you are not familiar with the ins and outs of American politics, I know I am no expert on Canada, but it isw way more involved than you (or Hillary and her supporters) make it out to be.

It has been hashed over here many times. Do some searching, it ought to be easy to find.

    Como chinges “rewarding?”

It’s called disenfranchising two important states that the Democrats need in November.

The only reason the Obama supporters want them disenfranchised is the states voted for Hillary.

BTW – The “rules” called for a reduction in the number of delegates, not a death penalty.

And nothing in the rules says that the popular vote totals from those two states don’t count.

There are Democrats in Utah (besides Rocky Anderson)?

But seriously, my folks voted for Obama over Clinton because they’re naive enough to believe in that Vince Foster/Whitewater/tax-and-spend Democrats BS Scaife et al. had been putting out all through the ’90s, not because they’re open-minded. And the only reason the Hillary supporters want them disenfranchised is that the compromise plan that Michigan’s Democrats came up with doesn’t give her the nomination on a silver platter.

You do know there’s a compromise plan that the state’s already approved that would allow them to get their delegates into the convention, but Hillary told them to go to hell, right?
