Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

How stupid are these people?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Stand up, dammit!

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

The Cursed Seat

by John Cole|  June 23, 20088:34 am| 10 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Politics

From NY:

The candidate endorsed by Republican leaders to run for a Congressional seat being vacated by Representative Vito J. Fossella died on Sunday morning at his home in Staten Island, party leaders said.

The candidate, Francis H. Powers, a board member of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, was a retired Wall Street executive and an active contributor to Republican candidates. Mr. Powers, 67, died in his sleep of natural causes, family members said.

Sad for his family, and bad luck for the GOP.

Sorry, just not in the mood to blog.

Today was my birthday, btw. Woo- 38 going on 12.

As a humorous side note, my mother is at the beach and forgot. She sent a card before she left, but is there with dad and the aging Jack Russell and no newspapers, so I called and talked for a few minutes, and then finally asked her if she had something she wanted to say. She said, “No, should I,” before I reminded her. We both had a laugh.

I thought it was pretty damned funny. At any rate, I will post again tomorrow.

Campaign Finance

On MTP, Obama’s decision to opt out of public financing is topic #1, and I have to admit it amazes me the way the Republicans are able to pivot on this issue. To start, I have long held that I have no problem with the money in politics, and that what I wanted was openness. My ideal system would be immediate disclosure- let the money flow, so long as people know where it is coming from. I was never a supporter of McCain-Feingold, and unlike the Republicans, apparently, I still am not.

But what gets me is that McCain has completely gamed the system- his loan scheme with public financing then opting out is currently not even an issue on the show, and it would seem to me that would be at least mentioned. Of course, it is not, for whatever reason. Additionally, this is even more egregious when you consider that this is McCain’s signature issue. His name is on the damned bill, and the message he has sent is that the bill is a joke. Hell, aren’t there even lawsuits against the man on the issue?

I never much bought into the notion of liberal media bias (and you can search the archives for my past thoughts on it, I am too lazy), but the longer I am outside the Republican hive mind, the more I recognize that liberal media bias may be the biggest fraud the right-wing has ever gotten away with. It is absurd.

*** Update ***

One more thing regarding oil drilling, has it been mentioned that there is no refinery anywhere lacking for crude to produce the finished product? I was under the impression that refining capacity was pretty much maxed out, and were there refineries sitting around idle because of insufficient oil supplies, wouldn’t we hear about it? Wouldn’t that be a tailor-made talking point for the GOP, particularly with gas prices where they are?

So, if I am right, and there is no shortage of oil, but the bottleneck is refining capacity, why are we not hearing about it? Or am I just flat out wrong?

*** Update #2 ***

I have to say, Brian Williams is doing a fine job.

I just love the CBS Sunday Morning music critic. His choices are always right up my alley- I don’t know if it is because everything he picks is just “good,” or because I fit the focus group that will have a certain type of taste in music, or maybe both, but that Lizz Wright album sounds amazing and I will definitely pick it up. As well as the Mudcrutch.

*** Update ***

Defying conventional wisdom that it would be Brokaw in Russert’s seat, Brian Williams is filling in for the deceased host.

The New York Times: Bush May End Term With Iran Issue Unsettled

No shit.

And Iraq
And Afghanistan
And gas prices
And food prices
And the economy
And the housing crisis
And our descimated military
And the debt
And emergency management
And healthcare
And North Korea
And Palestine/Israel
And the environment
And the trade deficit
And keeping religion out of government
And our relationships with Europe and the rest of the world
And human rights
And education
And the war on drugs
And food and drug safety
And cronyism
And the dollar
And the Supreme Court
And Medicare Part D. (I forgot about that one.)

Is there anything this administration has done right? Anything? The Times is pointing to just one failure. I’ve thought about this for awhile, and I don’t see any positive legacy for President Bush. Nothing. The only legacy I can see him having is a pretty library somewhere. His legacy can be summed up in two words:

Epic Failure.

…on everything he’s touched.

Feel free to add your own failures of the Bush administration in the comments. And, by all means, tell me if there’s anything he has done right? Because after what I’ve seen for the past 7 years, I wouldn’t hire him to cook fucking Freedom Fries™ at McDonald’s.

Update: I have added a few from the comments. So far, it seems the only substantial accomplishment is the Do Not call list. I will give him that. It’s a good thing. But I agree with a commenter. If that’s all I got as the President of the United States, then I would off myself.

Update II: One thing I think the administration has done right. Robert Gates. I actually think this guy is a good SecDef. And I agree that Obama would be wise to keep him. But that was probably a fluke after a BushCheney binge drinking night. Still, flukes are sometimes good.
