Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

And About That Campaign Finance

by John Cole|  June 20, 200810:56 am| 32 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

There is one person who is lying, cheating, and gaming the system. I am sure you will be shocked to learn it is Mr. McMavericky Straight Talk:

I mentioned earlier today that it was quite a thing to see John McCain denouncing Barack Obama for breaking his word on public financing when McCain himself is at this moment breaking the law in continuing to spend over the spending limits he promised to abide by through the primary season in exchange for public financing. (By the FEC’s rules, we’re still in the primary phase of the election and will be until the conventions.)

I want to return to this subject though because this is not hyperbole or some throw away line. He’s really doing it. McCain opting into public financing, accepted the spending limits and then profited from that opt-in by securing a campaign saving loan. And then he used some clever, but not clever enough lawyering, to opt back out. And the person charged with saying what flies and what doesn’t — the Republican head of the FEC — said he’s not allowed to do that. He can’t opt out unilaterally unless the FEC says he can.

The most generous interpretation of what happened is that McCain’s lawyer came up with an ingenious legal two step that allowed him to double dip in the campaign finance system, eat his cake and spend it too. But even if you buy that line, successful gaming of the system doesn’t really count as strict adherence. And the point is irrelevant since the head of the FEC — a Republican — says McCain cannot do this on his own.

Maybe once this gambit gets exposed McCain can call up Keating for a loan.

A Long Election Cycle

by John Cole|  June 20, 200810:51 am| 72 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

David Brooks has a piece up discussing Obama’s ruthlessness and cynicism, in which he appears to think that the definitions of ruthless and cynical are “not a complete and total moron.” In short, Brooks and others are beginning to learn that Obama is tough, calculating, will throw punches, and is not going to sit back and take crap from them.

That has to scare them.

The best part of this election is about to start, though- we are going to be treated to months of folks on the right learning Obama really is not as liberal as they think he is and becoming upset that they can not simply attack him as a radical left-winger (although some morons will still continue with the Marxist nonsense because it is all they know), all the while having to watch left-wingers kvetch and moan as they learn he really is not as liberal as they thought he was and that he will move to the center to and compromise. Put together, it has the potential to be really damned amusing.

Just So We Are Clear

by John Cole|  June 19, 20087:18 pm| 113 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Republican Stupidity

Just so we are clear about this- the latest whinge from the “fiscal conservatives” at Red State, Hot Air, the Corner, and elsewhere is that Obama won’t use public financing to finance his campaign. And they are serious about pushing this line of attack?

I am understanding this correctly, right?

Random Thoughts

This post is in: Media, Popular Culture

I am ignoring the news, because there is a lot of stuff out there that pisses me off and I found myself flipping between the Food Network and a re-run of Monk. Some thoughts:

Robin Miller’s eyes can not be naturally that blue.

I like the Season 1 Monk theme song better.

I like Sharona better than the Natalie.

Watching Rachel Ray for the first time for more than a few minutes, I can tell why she is so popular. She is just a fun person, or at least appears to be on tv. Plus, after watching her, it just makes that whole Dunkin Donuts terrorist scarf nonsense look even dumber. Rachel is so undeniably, quintessentially American.

Every time I watch Monk, I laugh that the Chief is played by the same actor who was Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs.

Thank goodness the new season starts in a few weeks.

I don’t care what other people say. Lt. Disher is win.

At any rate, consider this an open thread.

*** Update ***

One other thing. Someone please tell the Republicans and the McCain campaign to shut up about Obama opting out of public financing. Hypocrisy? Blow it out your ass- your candidate spent years forcing those laws down our and then just decided to break them and that they did not need to apply to him. Obama didn’t break any rules, or break any laws. Seriously. Just shut up and pound salt, you wankers.

Unbelievable

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

For no reason that I can fathom Steny Hoyer has decided to capitulate entirely on government eavesdropping and amnesty for the telecoms who assisted them. What was the overwhelming political pressure? Somebody spell this out for me.

It appears that the deal is done, the vote is tomorrow, and there is be absolutely no aspect to this “compromise” that does not simply give the White House everything it wants. Go read Glenn Greenwald if you have the stomach for it.

Then call Steny Hoyer and let him know how you feel. I don’t care what tone you use. (202) 225-4131

When you’re done, use the Capitol switchboard to contact your own representative and let him or her know that we’re paying attention. (202) 225-3121

Tell them that if they think people who broke the law should get off scot free, then you demand the same privilege. Ask for an address where you can send your parking tickets to get canceled. Let them know that you’ll gladly support a primary challenger against anybody stupid enough to support this abortion of a bill.

Let them know that the story won’t go away and it won’t age well. Hillary lost her primary fight because of a stupid vote for war, and your representative can go down just the same. Assholes who want to sacrifice fundamental American values for a a petty and incredibly misguided political calculation have no place in my party.

***Update***

Mike Doyle doesn’t have a position on the bill? What a bullshit cop-out. He’s going to do what, make up his mind in the shower tomorrow morning? The answer is especially unsatisfying because Doyle is one of the more reliable Democrats in the House. I will give major kudos to the first reader who can get a firmer position from Doyle’s office than that.

Question About The Flood

by John Cole|  June 19, 20082:42 pm| 49 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Obviously all the flooded farmland is for the most part a loss this year, but will it have a long-term impact? Will the topsoil be carried away in the flood waters, thus leaving the land less productive, or is it a net gain because new “stuff” will be deposited? Or is it such a short-term thing the impact will be negligible?

Just curious.
