Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

We will not go back.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

People are complicated. Love is not.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Country Clubfoot In The Mouth

by John Cole|  June 23, 20087:55 pm| 110 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Republican Stupidity, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

I don’t even get this:

ABC News’ Christianne Klein reports that at a breakfast with Republican insiders at the Capitol Hill Club this morning, former White House senior aide Karl Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as “coolly arrogant.”

“Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” Rove said, per Christianne Klein. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Does this make any damned sense? Since when do people look at Obama and think “He goes to a country club?” At least the “radical liberal with black panther racist priest and oh by the way he is a stealth muslim” BS they are peddling makes sense, even if it is a silly and stupid smear, but Country Club? When I think of country clubs, I think of the Enron crowd that puts folks like Mitt Romney and George Bush and Kay Bailey Hutchinson in office. But black liberals from Illinois named Obama?

Is Hamas into country clubs or something?

Something From John McCain I Can Get Behind

by Michael D.|  June 23, 20084:39 pm| 74 Comments

A prize!

Senator John McCain on Monday proposed the creation of a $300 million prize for anyone who developed breakthrough car-battery technology and he recommended greater tax incentives for buyers of nonpolluting autos, saying that only a combination of increased oil production, conservation measures and ingenuity could ease the fuel crisis and slow global warming.

I don’t know the details, or how McCain will pay for it. What I do know is that it’s better in the hands of private industry. $300 million is a big incentive – a buck per citizen. I love X-Prize style ideas. Especially since it would probably cost the government about $300 billion to do it (probably a lowball estimate.)

I still hope the bastard loses, however.

Great Moments in Liberal Media, Volume 39282

by John Cole|  June 23, 20084:36 pm| 24 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Media, Assholes

This weekend on Lou Dobbs, we got this gem:

DOBBS: A stunning reversal this week from Senator Obama. Senator Obama saying now he will not accept public financing for the general election campaign. Thereby breaking a promise he made earlier. Joining me now for more on that and the week’s political developments, Errol Louis, columnist, “New York Daily News” and “LOU DOBBS TONIGHT” contributor, Hank Sheinkopf, democratic strategist, also a “LOU DOBBS TONIGHT” contributor, Lisa Schiffren, “National Review” and Ken Vogel, politico.com. Thank you both for being here. Thank you very much, Earl and Hank.

***

LISA SCHIFFREN, “NATIONAL REVIEW”: You know, you can’t argue with what you’ve said. But the fact is, he is new to America. And he’s got this kind of cult following. And there is a sense of, you know, messianism about him. I always refer to him as Senator Jesus, which is a little funny. But there’s some truth to the way he’s being treated by his followers there. Breaking a promise like this is a big deal. It speaks to character. Is it true that people care not so much about campaign finance reform? I think that’s right. I hope McCain hears that, too. But, you know, this is something he felt he was strong about in the fall. He was the one who invited John McCain to discuss how they were both going to stay within the federal spending limits. DOBBDS: All right. Ken, your thoughts.

I remember when I saw that on Saturday, I was shocked that no one challenged her. I really shouldn’t have been, though.

If you keep reading the transcript, the train wreck got even better as Lou Dobbs literally freaked out on the media, claimed they had no integrity and were in bed with Obama because they refused to savage him for… MoveOn’s Baby Alex commercial. The whole spurt of segments was appalling.

I guess I remember why I never watch Lou Dobbs, who really should be on Fox. That, and I can not sound the sucking sound he makes with his dentures when he talks.

This Is Nice To Know

by John Cole|  June 23, 20082:56 pm| 68 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, General Stupidity

John McCain aide Mark Soohoo at the Personal Democracy Forum:

“John McCain is aware of the Internet,” says Soohoo. “This is a man who has a very long history of understanding on a range of issues.”

That is certainly a relief, but when Soohoo went on to say McCain planned to drill “the Google” for oil, the crowd again became concerned. And, in all honesty, the more pressing question is whether or not John McCain is aware of all internet traditions.

The Hard Left New Republic Syndrome

by John Cole|  June 23, 200812:30 pm| 98 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Excellent Links

Dredging up what is now ancient history, I think one of the funniest aspects of the Beauchamp spectacle from last year was the way the New Republic became branded as a hard left, America-hating magazine for the dirty fucking hippy set, when in reality it is a center left magazine (and many times marginally that) that was pro-war and has featured as editor such left-wing luminaries as Andrew Sullivan and Michael Kelly. The whole thing was absurd.

The reason I mention this is because today, by way of discussing the Democratic cave-in on FISA, Glenn Greenwald talks about the TNR’s past pro-war support and names a new disease:

More importantly, it’s a perfect museum exhibit to illustrate how the Democratic Party failed completely to provide any meaningful opposition to the extremism, excesses and abuses of the Bush years, instead enabling and endorsing those abuses when they weren’t standing by meekly and quietly allowing it all to take root. Throughout the Bush era, the Democratic Party has been dominated by The New Republic Syndrome — Democrats who are either petrified of meaningfully opposing the right-wing agenda that has dominated our country or who support virtually all of it, while eagerly volunteering to serve as the most vocal demonizers of those who want our country to have a real opposition party.

Despite those forced mea culpas and reversals, TNR never actually learns. Today — in a post bearing the very sensible and Serious title: “Keeping FISA in Perspective” — TNR is here, via Josh Patashnik, to tell you that there’s nothing truly disturbing about the FISA bill that is about to pass…

***

The reason these posts are worth noting is because they so perfectly capture the mindset that needs to be undermined more than any other. It’s this mentality that has destroyed the concept of checks and limits in our political system; it’s why we have no real opposition party; and it’s why the history of the Democrats over the last seven years has been to ignore and then endorse one extremist Bush policy after the next. It’s because even as The New Republic Syndrome has been proven to be false and destructive over and over — even its practitioners have been forced to recognize that — it continues to be the guiding operating principle of the party’s leadership.

The defining beliefs of this Syndrome are depressingly familiar, and incomparably destructive: Anything other than tiny, marginal opposition to the Right’s agenda is un-Serious and radical. Objections to the demolition of core constitutional protections is shrill and hysterical. Protests against lawbreaking by our high government officials and corporations are disrespectful and disruptive. Challenging the Right’s national security premises is too scary and politically costly. Those campaigning against Democratic politicians who endorse and enable the worst aspects of Bush extremism are “nuts,” “need to have their heads examined,” and are “exactly the sorts of fanatics who tore the party apart in the late 1960s and early 1970s.” Those who oppose totally unprovoked and illegal wars are guilty of “abject pacifism.”

It’s exactly that mentality that has brought us to where we are as a country and a political system today.

In that light, it is easier for me to understand why many think Obama has cut and run on FISA, despite maintaining he will work to remove immunity. From my perspective, I don’t see much of a capitulation, but more of a recognition of the realities, but if you look at what Glenn and I are both arguing (and neither one of us supports the FISA bill), it seems like the difference between the two of us is really in what we think of as the long-term strategy. For me, the long-term is in the context of the election, and November is the end-game. With my mindset, you look at the political realities, realize you are right on the issue but the politics are against you, cut your losses and keep working towards changing the game in November. I just don’t see anything in the works that will be game-changing regarding this piece of legislation- it is going to pass, no matter what Obama does.

For Glenn, the long-term means the fight must start now, and if you fight now, the election will turn your way, as it will be a reflection of the public’s embrace of your willingness to fight. Any of the short-term political concerns that I noted here are of little relevance, and your larger message will carry the day. In essence, Glenn is arguing that the reason Democrats keep losing is because they refuse to fight, and I have to admit, there is a helluva lot of truth to that. With that in mind, I can fully understand why many feel let-down by Obama’s “capitulation.” Again, I do not see it as a capitulation, but a recognition that the fight is lost and there is no point wasting political capital on the issue, but if you work from Glenn’s frame, anything other than a barn-burning rebuke of the FISA garbage that just passed the house is capitulation.

In short, in my way of looking at things, nothing changes if we lose in November. Glenn believes nothing changes unless we change the way we fight, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next week with FISA being presented in the Senate. The bill is going to pass, but how Obama fights the immunity provision will go a long way to demonstrating what he thinks the best general election strategy will be for his team. Personally, I think Obama has already shown a willingness to fight and to engage, and that he realizes this issue is lost, but it remains to be seen if that will satisfy those who want a bolder strategy.

This post got a lot longer and much more rambling than I had intended…

Bad Press

This post is in: Election 2008

If I were a former Clinton supporter, I would be pretty pissed about this piece in Salon by Rebecca Trasiter titled Why Clinton voters say they won’t support Obama:

But why do you keep hearing all these stories about grumpy old ladies still hung up on Hillary Clinton, the ones who’re threatening to make a scene at the Democratic convention in Denver, or vote for John McCain in November?

To be fair, it’s not just women. There are plenty of Clinton supporters of every demographic description who are still ticked. But yes, it’s true that the Clinton base skewed female, and that women over 30 are the most vocal of the malcontents. Some of them are calling themselves “PUMAs” (as in “Party Unity My Ass”), an acronym that makes them sound, appropriately enough, like cougars in a very bad mood. Who are these women, and why are they such buzzkills?

She then goes on to list twelve reasons starting with “They are angry because their candidate lost a close contest” and “They are angry because their historic opportunity is over.” But the anger does not stop there. We are also informed they are mad at the media. They are mad at Howard Dean. They are angry Bill Clinton, and Mark Penn. Somewhere down the list, we are informed they are mad at Obama, but we really are not told why, other than the “You are likable enough remark” from the debate.

The article portrays them in a pretty negative light- petty, childish, immature, vengeful, and simply poised to throw away their vote out of spite. Nowhere on the list is any anger over a real issue- just perceived slights and seething rage at someone, anyone. I really can not imagine that Clinton supporters are going to enjoy this piece.

*** Update ***

More support for the belief that the Democratic party is filled with spineless wimps here. Personally, I came to the party pre-disillusioned, so maybe it just doesn’t hit me as hard.

The Best Statistic

by John Cole|  June 23, 20088:51 am| 55 Comments

This post is in: War

The best statistic you will read all day is this:

Roadside bomb attacks and fatalities in Iraq are down by almost 90% over the last year, according to Pentagon records and interviews with military leaders.

In May, 11 U.S. troops were killed by blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) compared with 92 in May 2007, records show. That’s an 88% decrease.

***

Ad hoc local security forces, known as the Sons of Iraq, have provided on-the-ground intelligence to U.S. forces looking for IEDs, said Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, who commanded a division in Baghdad from February 2007 until May.

Each member of the security forces earns about $8 per day. Lynch has hired about 36,000 of them to man checkpoints and provide intelligence on the insurgency. He said about 60% had been insurgents.

At least the fatalities are down.
