Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bark louder, little dog.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The Real News from Tuesday

The Republican brand is toxic:

Democrat Travis Childers won Tuesday’s Mississippi special election runoff for Sen. Roger Wicker’s (R) former House seat, handing Democrats the biggest of their three special election takeovers this cycle and sending a listless GOP further into a state of disarray.

Childers led GOP candidate Greg Davis 53-47 with more than 90 percent of precincts reporting. Turnout increased substantially over the 67,000 voters who cast ballots in the April 22 open special election, with more than 100,000 voting in the runoff.

THIS IS GOOD NEWS! FOR REPUBLICANS!

The last one was getting crowded and started to smell of arugula and double-latte.

The Clinton plan now appears to be to ride to victory on the backs of WV, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico. Quit laughing.

Anyone who sends Clinton money tonight might be interested in investing in my fur-bearing trout farm. And did the 100 million dollar couple really take money from a kid who sold his bike and video games?

Now THAT is populism, baby!

*** Update ***

Mon County (from Wheeling, go SE until you see the county on the PA border), my home, is going to Clinton 55-39, a 26 point margin, so maybe my 28 point margin for Clinton of victory was an accurate assessment of my area.

*** Update #2 ***

I am a moron and fail basic math- it is a 16 point margin in Mon County. I have GOT to get some sleep.

*** Update #3 ***

Looks like Poblano might be right again, and this will be a 35+ point margin of victory for Clinton.

*** Update ***

I forgot to mention, the Pens won again and lead the series 3-0. Suck it, Philly. Thank god for picture in picture, btw.

Breaking Hard

Hillary is predicted to win WV.

No shit. All that matters are the margins, and they don’t really even matter. I guess we all get to pretend for another week that this is an actual race, still, and we get to keep playing the “why won’t white people vote for Obama” game that gives Hillary supporters comfort in defeat.

Good times. At least the national media is out of West Virginia. Thank God for that.

*** Update ***

Let no one ever say that Hillary is lacking in chutzpah. I am paraphrasing, of course, but this speech that was dubbed the greatest speech ever has so far consisted of “Visit my website and give me money, and I won this little state, so the supers better reverse the results of the other 49 states and give me the nomination.” It is pretty awesome stuff. I am really moved.

Where the fuck did I put my foam brick?

*** Update #2 ***

Is it just me, or is it a bit obscene for Clinton to talk about the ties that bind us together after spending two weeks carving up the electorate along racial and financial lines.

This speech is nothing more than her begging the supers. This is the greatest speech ever?

Feh.

*** Update #3 ***

Chris Matthews is impressed how delusional Hillary is.

*** Update #4 ***

Boone County, home of Jesco White, the Dancing Outlaw, is breaking for Hillary 80-13 (it is the county directly south of Charleston).

Proud to Call Georgia Home

Actually, I am, because I know this is not normal. Still, shit like this never surprises me – not here.

Marietta tavern owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he’s peddling, featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with “Obama in ’08” scrolled underneath, are “cute.” But to a coalition of critics, the shirts are an insulting exploitation of racial stereotypes from generations past.

Lovely. I live here in Georgia because I know the majority is not like this – even conservatives. Still, it makes me wince and feel embarrassed for the entire state.

It is beautiful outside- I predict record turn-out and Hillary by 28 (and yes, that is just a wild guess with no data driving it whatsoever).

Fat Lady = Bald Man

James Carville is now calling Obama the likely winner:

Speaking to students at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, Carville argued Clinton should stay in through the final nominating contest in early June, but said the Democratic tide appears to be moving in Obama’s direction.

“I still hear some dogs barking,” Carville said, according to The State newspaper. “I’m for Senator Clinton, but I think the great likelihood is that Obama will be the nominee.”

“As soon as I determine when that is, I’ll send him a check,” he added.

Carville has been, and continues to be, one of Clinton’s staunchest supporters. Until now, he has not wavered. It’s great that, now that he has, he follows it up by telling us he’ll be right there with Obama when the nominating process is complete. That’s a lot classier than we can expect from a lot of her supporters.

This Will Be Rich

The Republicans are embracing change:

But the respite might be temporary given the uncertainty surrounding Representative Vito Fossella, the New York Republican whose drunken-driving arrest led to disclosures of an out-of-wedlock child with a woman in suburban Virginia. The weekend saw mixed reports on whether Mr. Fossella, who is married, was going to try to hold his seat.

Hoping to get things moving in a positive direction, House Republicans will on Wednesday begin rolling out their own policy agenda, trying to showcase their differences with Democrats on issues such as health care, the economy, energy and national security.

In a memo to be sent to Republican members today, the leadership hints at a new slogan building on the change message that has already been shown to have political resonance with a public unhappy with the nation’s direction.

It looks like Republicans will counter the Democratic push for change from the years of the Bush administration with their own pledge to deliver, drum roll please, “the change you deserve.” The first element of the party agenda developed over the past few months by the leadership and select party members will focus on family issues.

“Through our “Change You Deserve” message and through our “American Families Agenda,” House Republicans will continue our efforts to speak directly to an American public looking for leaders who will offer real solutions for the challenges they confront every day,” said the memo prepared for lawmakers.

Alternate working slogans:

Change You Deserve- “One Man, One Family.”
American Families Agenda- “We like American families so much, some of us have several of them.”

This election is going to be a target rich environment for blogging.

*** Update ***

This is all kinds of awesome:

What the GOP doesn’t seem to realize, because they are idiots, is that “the change you deserve” is the registered advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug that many of you might have started taking as a result of all the…you know — terrorism. (Hat tip to Bluestem for catching this gem.)

It is really going to suck in November watching the Democrats figure out how to lose this election.
