Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

The words do not have to be perfect.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

How stupid are these people?

When I was faster i was always behind.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!

This post is in: Election 2008, Assholes

I guess yelling that she was going to vote for Hillary over McCain didn’t get her enough attention, so Ann Coulter once again farts in public to try to gain everyone’s attention:

If characters from “The Hills” were to emote about race, I imagine it would sound like B. Hussein Obama’s autobiography, “Dreams From My Father.”

Has anybody read this book? Inasmuch as the book reveals Obama to be a flabbergasting lunatic, I gather the answer is no. Obama is about to be our next president: You might want to take a peek. If only people had read “Mein Kampf” …

What an asshole.

Late Night BSG Blogging

Just finished the “33” episode from season 1, and as someone who occasionally suffers from insomnia, it damn near made me manic.

As a side note, having a stacked platinum blonde in varying stages of undress for an hour every night has to be a sure-fire recipe for success among the geek set. I approve.

Please no spoilers.

National Security Conservatives

by Tim F|  April 2, 200810:19 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: War

One obvious truth ignored by Very Serious People on my TV is the punishing and unsustainable cost of maintaining our occupation in Iraq.

Senior Army and Marine Corps leaders said yesterday that the increase of more than 30,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan has put unsustainable levels of stress on U.S. ground forces and has put their readiness to fight other conflicts at the lowest level in years.

In a stark assessment a week before Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, is to testify on the war’s progress, Gen. Richard A. Cody, the Army’s vice chief of staff, said that the heavy deployments are inflicting “incredible stress” on soldiers and families and that they pose “a significant risk” to the nation’s all-volunteer military.

[…] “I’ve never seen our lack of strategic depth be where it is today,” said Cody, who has been the senior Army official in charge of operations and readiness for the past six years and plans to retire this summer.

[…] The nation needs an airborne brigade, a heavy brigade and a Stryker brigade ready for “full-spectrum operations,” Cody said, “and we don’t have that today.”

Soldiers and Marines also lack training for major combat operations using their entire range of weapons, the generals said. For example, artillerymen are not practicing firing heavy guns but are instead doing counterinsurgency work as military police.

The situation is just unbelievably depressing. The most that we can accomplish now is to take sides in an internecine fight in which either winner will have friendly ties with Iran plus brewing fights both with Sunnis, over about five hundred years of accumulated grievance, and with the Kurds whenever the Kirkuk referendum comes to a vote. For his trouble the winner will inherit a broken waste with third world infrastructure. Talented leadership is leaving the Army at the fastest rate since Vietnam.

In return for this somewhat limited strategic accomplishment we now risk some unexpected conflict catching America flat-footed, unable to answer any serious challenge unless the enemy fields a Navy. In any meaningful sense America is less secure now than we were back when Colin Powell frightened the UN with bugbears and basilisks.

Unless I missed anyone else who opposed Iraq from day one, it’s fairly clear that the only National Security Conservatives left on Earth are Daniel Larison and Pat Buchanan. If the EPA is notified soon enough maybe they can be induced to breed.

This Needs A Response

by John Cole|  April 2, 20088:28 pm| 70 Comments

This post is in: Politics, General Stupidity, Outrage, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

I thought I was done blogging for the night, but then I saw this, and it needs a response. Phillip Girardi, in an attempt to make the case that Obama might be a solid choice for conservatives who are unwilling to vote for Hillary but hoping for a retreat from the disastrous Bush policies that McCain will surely continue, states the following:

As a conservative, it is frankly incomprehensible to me that anyone would want to go back to the sleaze, constant political triangulation, sense of aggrieved entitlement, and low life characters like Sandy Berger that characterized the Clinton White House. Nor is it possible to understand why anyone would want to cast a vote that would seem to establish a dynastic principle in American politics in which the White House alternates between people named Bush and Clinton. The American people and the country surely deserve something markedly better than the Bushes and Clintons that we all have experienced. Jeb and Chelsea, step aside please! Find a real job.

Taking aim at the deficiencies of the Clintons is not to exonerate George W. Bush, who has been a far worse, more corrupt, and much more dangerous president than Bill Clinton ever was. But let’s face it, as presidents go, Clinton was an ethical mess, actually making George Bush look good on the personal integrity scale.

What a load of crap. I wish that would suffice for a response, but it will not. So let me state again- what a load of crap.

I am not going to excuse the lamentable personal ethical lapses of Bill Clinton, nor am I going to excuse any other ethical shortcomings that may have occurred during his administrations. At the same time, I am not going to sit by and let someone glibly claim that those ethical lapses mean that Bill Clinton has less personal integrity than George Bush.

George Bush has been, without question, the most ethically handicapped President in my lifetime, and perhaps ever. From the top to the bottom of his administration, we have witnessed rampant and widespread criminality, cronyism, and incompetence of an unparalleled nature, and again, this has been from the top to the bottom of his administration. George Bush is responsible for the smoldering wreckage that is the current DOJ. George Bush is responsible for the disaster in Iraq. George Bush is responsible for the fact that the federal government has served as an affirmative action program for unqualified hacks from Regents University. George Bush is responsible for illegal surveillance of American citizens. And on and on and on.

On the day that the Yoo memo is finally coming to light, detailing how George Bush’s handpicked crew of war criminals orchestrated a regime of torture, and on the day that we learn the Inspector General is investigating whether qualified DOJ lawyers were fired because of their sexual orientation, it is particularly offensive to be told that George Bush, the man responsible for all of this and who knows what else, is a man of higher integrity than Clinton.

While I definitely agree with the premise that Obama will be a better choice than another Clinton administration, with all the luggage they bring, attempting to claim George Bush is a man of personal integrity while Bill Clinton is an ethical piker should be something that offends all conservatives and all Americans. Bill Clinton got a blow-job and lied about it under oath. George Bush, while violating every conservative principle imaginable, also oversaw the brutal rape of this nation’s most cherished principles, all while sneering and bullying those who tried to stop him.

There simply is no comparison.

Veganism

by Michael D.|  April 2, 20088:24 pm| 101 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

So, on February 16th, I decided to give up meat. I thought, initially, that I would just be a vegetarian. The thing is, I’ve given up everything. I haven’t touched anything that has breathed, and that includes eggs, milk, yogurt, etc. (It’s a good thing I’ve always loved tofu! And I have always preferred Boca burgers to beef burgers.) And I don’t miss meat, either.

Breakfast: Bran flakes with soy milk, orange, soy yogurt (which I make myself with silken tofu and frozen berries – cheap)
Lunch: Black beans, rice, tofu, and salsa or a tofu wrap with lettuce, tomato, veggie cheese, and taco sauce.
Dinner: Grilled vegetables, tofu, potatoes – or just a plain ole Boca burger.

Seriously, it’s so much easier than I thought it would be, and I actually enjoy it because I am a cook and I love the idea of challenging recipes.

My question though: Can I be a vegan if I still buy running shoes made of leather? I suppose not, but I mean, can you actually buy good running shoes that don’t contain leather? I still have all the other crap I have had for years – leather jackets and such. I’m not going to throw them out because I suddenly have a conscience, but I’m not going to buy leather anymore, except for the running shoes.

I’m conflicted. Can I actually buy good running shoes that don’t contain leather? Preferably Asics? I don’t think you can. I can’t find ’em. And honestly, running shoes are the only thing I am actually concerned about!

Picked up Season 1 of BSG today when I went to get my new modem, and so far the first episode appears to be nothing more than the movie I watched.

Also, in the mail, I got Glenzilla’s new book, Great American Hypocrites, which I will try to review next week. One of the chapters is named “Tough Guise,” which I thought was a great chapter name.

Consider this your open thread for the night.

If you still can not understand why the Michigan delegates should not be seated, perhaps this will help to demonstrate the sheer idiocy and brazen bullshit of the Clinton campaign:

A few more can be found here.

It is funny because it is true.
