We Are All Sexists Now

by John Cole|  February 16, 200812:27 pm| 195 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Democratic Stupidity

I simply do not get it- how the hell is Big Tent Democrat claiming this is a sexist attack:

He even truncates the remark to remove the second part of the quote, where Obama decries that “sort of gamesmanship.” Look, I believe there has been a good bit of sexism launched at Hillary this campaign, and have said as much. I haven’t seen any of it, however, from Obama and his campaign.

Pretending this is a sexist attack is as stupid as pretending that when Clinton called Obama a “kid” means he was calling him a “boy,” which of course means Clinton was actually calling Obama the n-bomb. That was stupid. This assertion is stupid. Not to mention, we know that the Hillary campaign, as a strategy, has decided to go negative and challenge Obama to debates in order to… boost Hillary’s appeal.

If this is sexist, then we are all sexists now. And the Clinton supporters really are getting pathetic, clutching at straws with a zeal Captain Ed could admire.

*** Update ***

Via the comments, I see that the freak-out is over the use of the word “periodically.” Give me a fucking break.

Here is Obama launching a exist attack on his smoking history: “”I’ve never been a heavy smoker,” Obama said. “I’ve quit periodically over the last several years. I’ve got an ironclad demand from my wife that in the stresses of the campaign I don’t succumb. I’ve been chewing Nicorette strenuously.”

Here is Mandolin, from Alas, A Blog, featured at the Feministblogs collaborative, launching a sexist attack on a homeless woman:

I have a friend who used to live as a homeless heroin addict on the streets of San Francisco when she was a teenager. Periodically, she writes about her experiences. People in workshops tend to respond by telling her that the experiences aren’t “realistic.”

I am sympathetic to many of the causes and concerns of feminists, but this sort of shit is ridiculous.

*** Update #2 ***

From the comments:

Obama wrote “The Audacity of Hope.” Emily Dickenson called hope “The thing with feathers.” Birds are things with feathers, and they have wings. What else has wings? Political parties… and Tampax!

There. I finally came up with a thought process dumber than the one behind BTD’s post.

The Same Old Bullshit

by John Cole|  February 16, 200810:42 am| 38 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®, General Stupidity, I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Captain Ed:

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed planned and helped execute the 9/11 attacks that killed 3,000 Americans. He also planned the 1993 World Trade Center Attack, the attacks in Bali and Kenya that killed hundreds more, and attacks that never had the chance to take place thanks to his capture and interrogation by American intelligence agents. We know this because KSM himself openly brags about his atrocities as a point of pride.

Now some have decided to help him commit his final atrocity — by painting himself as a victim…

And then a curious thing happens- Ed cites a long WSJ article, then goes back to moaning and wailing about all these people claiming KSM is a victim. There is, alas, one minor problem. They never mention who it actually is calling KSM a victim. Not in the 652 words Ed dedicated to this issue is there a mention of the “they” or the “who” or the “some” making KSM out as a victim. Nowhere in the 975 words in the WSJ editorial is there a name, either.

Captain Ed may not be able to join the military and do anything useful in the war on terror, but he sure as hell is a hero in the War on Straw. A salute to the brave Skipper.

Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses– Screw That, Send Us Your Women

by John Cole|  February 15, 20083:01 pm| 48 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

This is the weirdest story I have seen in a long time:

Amid a discussion of trade in 1973, Chinese leader Mao Zedong made what U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger called a novel proposition: sending tens of thousands, even 10 million, Chinese women to the United States.

“You know, China is a very poor country,” Mao said, according to a document released by the State Department’s historian office.

“We don’t have much. What we have in excess is women. So if you want them we can give a few of those to you, some tens of thousands.”

A few minutes later, Mao circled back to the offer. “Do you want our Chinese women?” he asked. “We can give you 10 million.”

“How much for the little girl? How much for the women?”

A truly bizarre offer. As a side note, I wonder what America would look like if we had an influx of ten million Asian women of child-bearing age several decades ago? Would it have changed marital structures and the culture, with that many available women? Would it have hastened the advances of the women’s rights movement? It would seem something like that would have a dramatic impact on society (much like what happened in Europe during the Great Wars when populations of young men were killed).

(via Memeorandum)
