Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

“woke” is the new caravan.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

No one could have predicted…

The words do not have to be perfect.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Open Thread The Third

by Tim F|  November 4, 200810:27 pm| 90 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Open Threads

The site is running like Jonah Goldberg in a 10k turkey trot and yet you guys rack up 400 comments in two posts. Try not to fill this one so fast.

***

10:59 pm: Virginia goes to Obama. Snoopy dance.

10:50 pm (Tim) – I’ve ragged on Goldberg a few times lately, so I owe it to him to point out that this is a classy concession speech, notwithstanding the financial incentive that the author of Liberal Fascism!!1one1eleven! has to paint every Democratic move as proof of America-hating totalitarian evil.

10:48 pm- BTW- I just finished another beer, and wanted to throw this out there- Larry Johnson and the PUMA’s can go die in a fire.

10:47 pm (John) I want to get this in one last time- Everything you have heard so far is good news for John McCain.

10:42 pm (Tim) – FOX predicts that Obama walks away with Virginia. Will McCain even deliver a concession speech, or will he just go to bed?

10:40 pm (John)- Any word on Murtha? Would love to see him lose. How about Bachman Traitor Overdrive? Any word on that cyst?

10:34 pm (John) – In a just universe, there would be a channel where Jeffrey Toobin, David Gergen, Eugene Robinson, and Chuck Todd would all be together, and the rest of these folks could be thrown into a woodchipper.

Also, in case I gloat too much, my mother reminded me I once thought Ryan Leaf was a franchise pick. Hell, I voted twice for Bush. That beats the Leaf bust hands down. John +9 or something. I see Parliament of Funk and a cigar in the short-term future.

10:22 pm (Tim) – Johnny Mac win Texas. That should revive the party at McCain HQ.

Election Live Blog #2

by John Cole|  November 4, 20088:13 pm| 284 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

Moving up here, because Tim and Michael want to change the way we liveblog. New posts will be at the top.

9:43 pm (John)- Ohio throws that idiot Joe the Plumber under the god damned bus. I hope they back up over him. This is over.

9:22: Mitch Mconnell wins. Ugh. (MD) But as I said earlier, I am not disappointed by that. I am not a McCoonnell fan. I am also not a shitty campaign tactic fan.

***

9:18 pm (Tim) – Here comes the fork. FOX calls Ohio for Obama.

9:04 pm (John)- Although the state and local races are really more important to the average voter, and then after that the US House and Senate races, it really is irritating me right now when they spend time covering the House and Senate races. Obama and McCain is all I care about.

9:01 pm: FOX briefly calls Ohio for Obama, then takes it back. Stop toying with me.

8:56 pm (Tim) Mark Steyn at the Corner:

I find that Keystone calling a bit premature given that a grand total of no precincts had reported. On the other hand, in good news for the GOP, CNN just put up a graphic showing Susan Collins with 100% of the vote and her challenger with 0%.

I can say without exaggeration that I have better election commentary in my pants.

8:54 pm (John) – I say again, this is taking too damned long.

8:39 pm (Tim) – Obama is -10 in KY with 50% reporting. It will be a sign if he kicks Kerry’s ass that isn’t known for racial harmony.

8:34 pm (Tim) – Watching FOX now. I have a champagne bottle of my sublime Baracktoberfest stout reserved for the moment that Brit Hume calls it for the Unity Pony.

8:33 pm (John)- Alabama goes to Johnny and the plumbers.

8:27 pm (John)- According to the GOS, Hagan, Warner, and Shaheen all won, so that is Blue +3, and Liddy Dole can spend the next few months helping Bob use up the complimentary viagra left over from 1996. +I Lost Count (although I think 7 is a safe guestimate)

8:20 pm (John)- Mom just called, and apparently one of the networks called WV for McCain, which should surprise approximately no one.

8:11 pm (John)- Suck it, Trebek. I guess PA went to Obama according to some channels other than CNN. I get only Fox and CNN, so I have to stick with CNN.

8:43: Didn’t see that we had a new Live Blog. We own Pennsylvania, bitches! (MD)

8:46: According to CNN, 102:34. Awesome. I am openly taunting my partner. I don’t know what he is fucking thinking. (MD)

8:53: Buh bye Liddy! Good riddance! (MD)

Election Live Blog

by John Cole|  November 4, 20087:17 pm| 179 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

8 pm (Tim) – Pennsylvania and New Hampshire called instantly for Obama. McCain staffers nervously looking out for forks.

7:58 pm (Tim) – Going to start liveblogging at the top of the thread. Memo to Ace from Pennsylvania – Tim Mahoney belongs to Florida. When he loses I will raise my glass with yours.

Since all of us can post to the same thread (I mean me, Michael, and Tim), here is one big thread so we do not have a new open thread every three minutes because all of us are alternating between being wasted and in a nervous panic.

So here goes.

7:17 pm (John)- Whoever thought of “beaming in” Jessica Yellin on CNN should be beaten with a stick. Twice.

7:22 pm (Tim) – I’m not alternating. +2.

7:24 pm (John)- I have always maintained that anything could happen, but I don’t think I ever internalized it because I felt Obama had run a solid campaign and done everything he could. Then, just a moment ago, I had a crushing sense of impending doom that Obama is going to lose. I pulled hard on my beer. It could happen, and I do not want to deal with it. +5.5

7:30 pm (Tim) – John Kerry lost Kentucky by 20. The last time CNN flashed its numbers Obama was down by 5%. Obviously he will lose the state by more than that, but it will be telling if Obama outperforms Kerry in a state like KY.

7:35 pm (Tim) – Jonah Goldberg on on the holotarded Yellin effect:

[W]as it really a hologram? I mean did Wolf see her as a 3D light projection or was it merely an illusion for the sake of the viewers? Wolf said it looked like she was really in the studio, but somehow I doubt they have holo projectors over at CNN.

Jesus f*cking christ. Bill Buckley must be so proud.

7:40 pm (John)- This is taking entirely too damned long. I have not had time crawl this slowly since I was in second grade and sent to Ms. Springborn’s office for causing trouble and had to wait on the bench outside contemplating whether or not the vaunted “electric paddle” existed and whether or not she would use it on me. +6.25

7:48 pm (Tim) – blogs on the beeb! I have a mild worry that they might bring us up to make blogging look bad.

7:57 pm: Obama is leading 55-45 in South Carolina. CNN projects a McCain win. I have no doubt about that, but, eh? (MD)

8:04: I decided to quite the drinking game. Obama: 77. McCain: 34. (MD)

8:15: I still say 350+ for Obama. (MD)

8:19: Haven’t seen the numbers myself, but a commenter says Dole is out in NC. Good riddance. And David Axelrod looks kinda like Hitler. (MD)

8:22: FWIW, I am watching CNN exclusively, holograms ‘n all. (MD)

8:29: EV = 81-34 Obama (MD)

8:30: New Hampshire belongs to B-Rock! (MD)

8:32: I am not watching FOX, but TZ says they are calling PA for Obama. Awesome. (MD) CNN is too. Barack Obama takes a state that McPalin counted on!!!

Bob Barr Carries Virginia!

by Tim F|  November 4, 20087:04 pm| 8 Comments

Do not listen to the exit polls. This was a warning.

In other news, I predict that the Democrats will win by exactly the margins in this thread. The numbers come from averaging guesses by almost 10,000 Kos readers and yes, that means that Obama will win by 351.69 electoral votes.

You say that is impossible? I have two answers for you. One – the famous jelly bean experiment proved that a huge number of people, guessing independently, can get disturbingly close to a correct answer. Two – Bush v. Gore. Like a fairy godmother that asks a lot of rhetorical questions the Supreme Court can do anything. That includes delivering a non-integer electoral vote.

BTW, Virginia and Indiana will be close. Mix a drink and relax.

One White Russian, two beers, and two vodka martinis later, as well as a filet and some asparagus and some garlic mashed potatoes, and I am ready for results.

So we have Vermont right now.

Deep Thought

Watching election coverage on the BBC, I realize that the British must think that we talk too fast, interrupt each other all the time and cannot focus on one topic for longer than ten seconds.

Election Night Drinking Game

by Michael D.|  November 4, 20085:56 pm| 57 Comments

Ok, here it is: Every time Obama wins an electoral vote, you have to take a shot.

This is your pre-Obama wave open thread. I an calling it 350 EVs for Obama. And I am including Georgia. In 2004, 835,000 African-Americans voted in the entire election. This year, 705,000 voted in early voting alone. I’m taking that as a good sign. In addition, I am hearing on local radio that the Atlanta suburbs are experiencing 15-20 minute waits at the polls. Not a good sign for McCain.
