Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

BTW- Wolf Blitzer had an interview with Pervez Musharraf and I am not quite sure I have ever seen anything quite like it before. He really laid out a case as to why sentiment is so anti-American in Pakistan. While I was watching it, all I could think was “Man, he sure feels free to speak his mind now that he no longer has to deal with us.”

Asked why al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who is thought to be somewhere in the border region, hasn’t been found, he replied:
"I would like to ask the United States why he hasn’t been found. They have their intelligence. There are — you have more intelligence capability. I would like to ask the United States, why Mullah Omar has not been found, who is the leader of all of the Taliban in Afghanistan?"

But we got Number #2 on our Al Qaeda list, like, half a dozen times. That should count for something, right?

Reading around the conservative websites, you find them acting like they are all disappointed that black people practice "identity politics" and can’t seem to figure out why African Americans vote for the Democrats.

Do they not realize that liberals passed the Civil Rights Acts of the 1950s and 1960s while conservatives were opposed to these laws? I realize that at the time there were liberal and conservative Republicans and Democrats, but now that the parties have largely aligned themselves by ideology, it seems pretty normal that people would vote for the party that protects their interests.

Mushraff $10 million. Noo we will give you $100 million. But still we cant find osama and omar. Bcoz everyone knows that u no longer get that money if they are found. Everyone in that region know your intellegence ISI is part and parcel of Al-qieda and Taliban. And you get that arab money through these to fight in INDIA and WEST and you get money from USA to fight Taliban. Wow u got the best plan ever. You get money both sides. So you can blame each other. Its a clear example that you want to be the player in the region. Bcoz after 9/11Both Afghanistan and India are becoming partners to fight terrorism from pakistan soil. You dont want them to be together. But remember this you cant stop it. Bcoz when u r the whole reason for problem u cant expect everything good happen to you. First know how the politicans in your country function. They all are banking on anti-US votes. they are not good enough that they dont win elections unless they talk against non-muslims attacking their country. They are really poisioning the people and so furture generations. Why the hell we need to pay the culprit to fight terror and we need to pay you to keep your nuclear facilites safe. Its clear blackmailing. I dont know how many days pakistan can play this card game. You are soo idiotic to ask for more money.

Musharraf better watch his mouth. Obama already said he would strike when the Pakistani’s won’t, today was just the first example of that. And nobody has forgotten his own shady past. I will just bet the people of India would love to have that 10 billion and they just might be better at finding bin Laden too.

OT. (Slightly) but I absolutely love that "Lord of the Dance" was played at the inauguration. It was my wedding hymn (despite the vicar complaining that it was an easter hymn and our blessing was in December), I know it is AKA "simple gifts" but I will always know it as Lord of the Dance from singing it in Secondary School.

"Dance, dance, wherever you may be
for I am the Lord of the Dance you see
and I lead you all forever you may be
for I am the Lord of the Dance you see"

Slightly OT, still in the vein of not afraid to talk anymore, Olberman just mentioned this Harpers article, Glinda Arrives at State:

There are great hopes for Hillary at State. I met last week with a number of career State Department employees and was surprised when one said she was looking forward to the “Glinda Party” next week. I asked her: if Hillary was Glinda, the Good Witch of the South from the Wizard of Oz, did that make Condoleezza Rice the Wicked Witch of the West?

“You’re on to it,” she said. Another person pointed out to me that after Rice’s arrival in 2005 the tone of official State Department publications changed; they began to praise and glorify Rice. “No prior secretary,” said the twenty-year veteran, “did anything like this.”

We played it at my grandfather’s funeral. That man loved to dance. He’d go out to dances at the Legion and not get home until 3 in the morning, and he’d have danced the entire time. At my sister’s wedding, he ruled the dance floor, outlasting people a third his age.

Hearing it at the inauguration made me smile — I think my grandfather would have gotten along very well with your President Obama.

Musharraf is really something. I like the part where he gets all offended about being a failed state like Afghanistan. Sure, you’ve got your military and your ISI, but the only thing holding Pakistan together is its collective hatred for India.

I can tie a dead bird on the side of the road and Pakistan, to an event in…Turkey of all places.

Here is our proud feathered friend, strutting along the roadside, feathers glistening in the Tempe sun. Written by a white person, who probably went to a good school, on 27FEB08.

And here is tonight’s photograph. It was written by Ahmad Maher, two days later.

"No Muslim in the right mind would dare delete any hadith or tamper with the Prophet’s heritage."

When will anyone realize that the reason they can’t find bin Laden in the Frontier area is because he is not there.

I mean really, why would he stay in the area in which a search is going on, drone strikes occur, and has virtually no communication capabilities? The big, ugly planner of 9/11 was not found in the wilderness but in a nice safe (but for a sell out) villa in the eastern part of the country. Bin Ladin was probably slipped into a villa with a few devoted comrades, one or another of whom can sneak out and drop of messages and tapes at prearranged spots. He can also have one of the men be the shopper for the Villa who will have the cover story about who is living there.

Thus Bin Laden stays safe and secure with whatever he needs brought to him.

The intelligence needs to give up their favored hunt and fan out. There is no way a 6’4" man can be hidden in the open in a primitive area (which has access to taping studios).

I’ve been saying this since 2003.
