Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

This really is a full service blog.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

This fight is for everything.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

No one could have predicted…

Shut up, hissy kitty!

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Yep – got the “wordperfect” error message when I first tried to get to the website. It was in “raw” form, no message box, etc. Got there on the second attempt

Same as Steve, and when it finally did load, it loaded funkily (if that’s the adverbial form).

Also too, the cursor in the comments box is trembling like Lily the first day you saw her.

The right hand column has a bunch of these.

At the home page, the right hand column also had
    some

I’m just spitballing here, but could there be conflict issues with your customized interface? Has WordPress done any upgrades that are suddenly incompatible with the Balloon Juice theme?

I maintain several blogs with WordPress, but I use their own theme interfaces and I don’t seem to have any of the problems you seem to be dealing with.

Yes, WordPress errors here too: once above the header and twice in the right-hand column. Something is unhappy in the SQL back-end.

However, the site will load after waiting long enough and otherwise looks okay.

Over the past couple of days–regardless of whether at home on Comcast or in the office at my university–the site has been loading very slowly. Right now, there’s a whole lot of white space between the comments.

We all know that the Internet is powered by pet hamsters and rats running on exercise wheels that generate electricity. If you forget to feed them, you get Internet problems. At least that’s what my systems people tell me.

    John,

I did some research on this and came up with one possible explanation for the behavior. It seems to be a disk space error. You need to contact your hosting provider’s tech support.

This usually happens when /tmp fills up creating temp tables for the query. If it continues to happen let us know and we can look into why this is happening and/or increase the size of /tmp

I’m also getting the WP and Bad Behavior errors mentioned above. I see four WP errors on the top and RHS.

    In addition:

I get multiple errors while trying to submit this comment. (This is 2nd try). The errors include “sql server has gone away”

    RSS is not working.

On my Firefox 3.0.12/Mac Book, the comments are shown with very large whitespace gaps between them, like 1000 pixels.

The error console shows multiple errors:
    – error in parsing value for property padding-top from /wp-content/themes/balloon-juice/style.css, line 48
    – dropdown is null on /, line 596
    – Error in parsing value for property ‘filter’ on /, line 1

Just to add my two cents: Every refresh brings an SQL error 28 at the top and two more along the right side, above “Recent Posts” and also in place of the blog roll.

Actual content and format of each post are okay, though.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

I don’t know anything about WordPress, but I am a bit of an SQL weenie, and I think error 28, in the flavor of SQL typically used with WordPress, has to do with lack of disk space. Could that be (part of) your problem?

I add that it may not be an “absolute” lack of disk space. It could be that you have disk space free but it’s not enough for query buffering and/or temp files.

    /End of backseat driving.

Here via Firefox, and here’s what I see:

    1. Across the top of the site is:

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (24896) ORDER BY t.name ASC
    Balloon Juice

    2. Down the right-hand side, under the Hosting Matter/s ad is:

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (24887, 24884, 24879, 2487

… and under the “2007 weblog winner” badge is:

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.* FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON t.term_id = tt.term_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘link_category’) AND tt.count > 0 ORDER BY t.name ASC
    # Categories

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.* FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON t.term_id = tt.term_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘category’) AND tt.count > 0 ORDER BY t.name ASC

    3. Also seeing huge gaps between comments

    4. On the bright side, the left-hand side, where all the ads are, looks just fine!

I’m gonna see if Safari makes any difference.

I got the same wordpress error as everyone else when I was using IE 8 but I wasn’t able to post – I got a whole bunch of MySQL errors. I’m on Firefox now – got the same WordPress error on the top plus the site looks really weird – specifically the comments are spaced really strangely. We’ll see if this posts.

I think you need to go with nuke option and ditch the WP format altogether. Leave up the old site to where people can search the archives, but move to an entirely new platform. Something along the lines of Crooks and Liars , or Thinkprogress. Me chrystal ball says there is a deeply rooted malware in your BJ realm, maybe a worm that someone can activate to wreak havoc when they please. And obviously thusfar undetected. It’s the only way to be sure.

I get a WP error notice at the top of the page, and the layout of the page is totally borked. Error message follows:

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN ('category', 'post_tag') AND tr.object_id IN (24896) ORDER BY t.name ASC

Borking results in ads from left side colum being pushed toward the center of the page and overlaying the blog text, making most of the blog unreadable.

Interestingly, the ad formatting problem does NOT occur when viewed in Safari (v4.0.2) on my office Windows XP desktop PC. Borking occurs in Internet Explorer 7.0.

I also note that I get a slightly different WP errir message in Safari:

WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN ('category', 'post_tag') AND tr.object_id IN (24896, 24887, 24884, 24879, 24876, 24874, 24870, 24867, 24865, 24860, 24855, 24850, 24544, 24832, 24826) ORDER BY t.name ASC

I’m not a huge fan of WordPress. Especially when you have to rely on a few poorly maintained plugins to get things functioning the way you want. But I don’t think WordPress is your problem. I think your host is running a compromised or a poorly maintained server. I’d start looking for a new host and then start from a completely new install of WP.

    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (24896) ORDER BY t.name ASC

…but maybe it’s the same length as before.

The ads still are superimposed and infringe on the comment text, but I don’t see any giant white spaces between comments. That part is fine…but it wasn’t a problem this morning, either.

    That is all for now…

OT – but Koyaan over at PJ did some digging and came up with the “original” BC that the birfers used to create the Kenya one, it is not from Kenya, it is from South Australia, which would explain the crest at the top and the 7s 6d thing. Lavender is there (with changed initials) Miller is there (with changed initials) even the book and page number of the cert is the same. Boooya PJers!

FWIW, getting the same errors as mentioned above, WordPress/database errors & huge whitespace between comments, on Firefox on GNU/Linux/WTFever.

In Opera, no extra whitespace, but same errors otherwise.

Konqueror… well, never mind Konqueror. I click on a post title and it wants to know if I’d like to save the page or open it in Firefox. Sortable, but I’m too lazy to futz with it.

This kinda reminds me of the good old days of BJ where you’d submit a comment and get a WordPress error.

I need this site to work like a flower needs the rain. Firefox 3.5.1 on my Mac shows the WordPress errors on the top and right, and large white space between comments. The ads went back to the left where they belong.

Are there solar flares or something? I’ve been detecting a disturbance in the force all summer.

from Safari–same blecherous WP 28 error:

guess not. I get this error at the top
WordPress database error: [Got error 28 from storage engine]
    SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (‘category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (24896) ORDER BY t.name ASC
and the adds aren’t on the left where they belong but instead cover the left side of the posts. Good luck guys, looks like the internet gremlins are f@&%ing with you.

Looks like wingnut tea baggers have found a way to defeat Obama Care. Screaming frother mobs shouting down dems at townhall meetings with pure mayhem.. Paid for by the insurance lobby and directed by right wing talk radio.

Where is Officer Crowley when the peace is actually being disturbed.

Makes me want to break some heads.

    Happy Birthday, SiubhanDuinne!

(Don’t suppose you’d care to translate your nick for us non-Gaelic speakers?)

A Mom Anon, if you can read this, I hope you’ve been able to get some rest. Please do let us know how things are going for your family when you get the chance.

I think John should run the fundraiser as a “Vote for Tunch or Lily” poll. Let’s settle the site’s Cat-Servant-vs-Dog-Owner ratio once and for all!

    @ Lotus
    @ asiangrrlMN
    @ geg6 (twice!)
    @ Anne Laurie

Thanks, all, for the birthday wishes. Nice, pretty ordinary day, ending with a delicious dinner (not made by me!) — homemade lasagna and a double chocolate walnut cake with warm raspberry sauce.

Anne L, wrt my nick: first, thank you for knowing it is Gaelic! It is a translation (incorporating slight wordplay) of my maiden name. My last name was Mann; the Gaelic for “man” is “duine” and I simply doubled the N. I came up with it when I was about 12 and have used it in one or another iteration ever since.

More than you wanted to know, I’m sure!
