I need advice from you dog people.
I’ve been bringing my dog to work for like 3 years (usually once a week on Fridays). Last Friday, he pooped in one of my staff’s offices, and today he lifted his leg and marked the wall in that same office.
He didn’t have to pee, because I took him out right afterwards and nothing.
He know he was in trouble and ran under my desk and stayed there and even now is avoiding me.
Any ideas?
He’s 4 years old and is totally housetrained, so this is a behavioral thing.
Needless to say, he’s not going to the office anytime soon.

Re: Is Justice Stevens retiring next year?
It amazes me how far the Court has shifted to the right. When Stevens started, he was nowhere near the farthest left of the Court. Now, the fate of almost every important issue comes down to Kennedy.

@Max: Apart from having him checked by your vet… had your dog been in that staffer’s office before the first incident? Has your dog been fixed? Has he shown a particular interest in female dogs (something that neutering may not cure, especially if he was over 18 months old before it happened)? Does the staffer whose office was defiled have a dog, especially a dog they’ve recently acquired? If Max-Dog doesn’t have any physical problems, marking the wall sounds like he’s sending a message (the people on the papillon board joke about ‘doggy p-mail’). The problem is, us hairless apes don’t have the nasal discrimination to tell the difference between “Hey, baby, come here often, what’s your sign?” and “Max Rulez OK, All Others Eff Off! Taking a dump is usually the latter… so the next question goes “Who’s he challenging, the staffer, or the staffer’s dog (cat? horse? house rabbit?)…
Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to ask someone who works for you whether they’ve just acquired a new (assertive) pet, or if their dog is in season — I even heard about one case where the “departmental” dog did this when female staffers got pregnant, which didn’t become clear until the third or fourth woman was greeted by a stinking pile. You may just have to accept that Max-Dog must be kept out of that particular office in the future, because it’s clear that his urge to “comment” is stronger than his fear that you’ll be disappointed by his behavior.

Ninja kitteh is a ninja. Nemo is not.
This is a letter sent from a retired educator in Tennessee to the local superintendent:
I read with great surprise and dismay your decision not to show the President’s speech to students next week. It seems to me that Obama’s reasons for speaking to students are perfectly legitimate, i.e., to encourage students to be responsible for their learning and to complete school. He is, after all, the President of our country, our Commander-in Chief, and deserves the respect accorded to past Presidents of our country. Barack Obama has now become the first black President to get attacked by the right for telling kids to study hard and stay in school. The crap about a “socialist agenda” is coming from an extreme group of people who have never accepted Mr. Obama as the legitimate President of our country, and whose loud presence and vitriol has divided our country even more than it has been. Their fears are total fabrications and/or come from pathological and very prejudiced minds.
As you know, the President is a powerful role model for our students, most especially for minority children (and their families) who heretofore lacked a national leader of similar background to their own. For them, and for all students, to hear an address from the President who is wanting to encourage and motivate students to do their best, is indeed a rare event, and deserves broadcast. If you are worried about time wasted from serious academic studies, maybe schools need to pare down time pep rallies take and other such wonderful events which occur during the school day.
I expected better from you because you are intelligent and more worldly than most. So why are you caving in to the crazies? Is it really in the name of education?

Incidentally I could use any spare positive thoughts — our 15-year-old dog, Princess Buta-Hime-Sama, is in the doggie ICU after a heart attack last night. She’s now been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and probable Cushings disease, to go with her enlarged heart, bladder stones, arthritic joints & the aftereffects of having a chunk of cancerous bowel removed last year. The odds are that she’ll never come home, and that she’ll do so as dramatically & expensively as possible. I realize that we’re lucky that we’ve got access to this level of veterinary refinement, and can afford to put $130’s worth of Viagra for a female dog’s lung issues on the credit cards… but right now that’s the very definition of cold comfort. She’s the light of the Spousal Unit’s life, and her death is going to hit him very hard, even though it’s not totally unexpected given her age & previous health.

Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t like AMC. I sort of vaguely knew who she was (without ever having had the interest to learn more) for a while, and then she began showing up as a semi-regular guest on Rachel’s program. I can manage occasional drop-in visits because I know they won’t last long, but an entire hour is about 57 minutes more than I can take.

This whole thing with kids being kept from hearing a President speak about all AMerican ideals, that have been forever just that, is a whole new realm entered. It is dangerous, unAmerican in the extreme, and forbodes unpleasant times..
I know I’ve said about the same thing in several comments today, but this just bugs the living daylights out of me, more than anything they’ve pulled thus far.
Max
@Anne Laurie: I think you are right and its just him marking his terratory. He was fixed at the normal time, 3 to 4 months. The staffer has a cat. He likes to poop on vertical things, the fence in the yard, and at the dog park, he lifts his leg and backs into them, so I think he “marks” with both #1 and #2.
I think Max is claiming the office because her son was in the office not long ago and Max spent most of the day playing with him in her office, so I think he’s claiming her son.
Max is very spoiled when he comes to the office. Lots of fawning, treats, etc. He’s very cute, and the girls love him. I’m going to back them off a little.
My best guess is that because he’s a Terrier (a Wheaten), he and I need to take a dog training class so we can reconnect and he can be reminded that no matter how much love he gets, he is still a dog and I am still the master. I plan on being a little more dominant in our walks, i.e. not letting him wander, keeping him in step with me, until the class starts.
Damn Terriers!
Thanks for the advice.

Sending a brazillion positive thoughts your way. I am in an anticpatory place where you are right now, I have a 14 year old lab mix who I can see is slowly going down hill. He has been my baby since he was six weeks old. Stay with your baby, lots of scritches, lots of love, and when your “spousal unit” breaks down and cries like a baby, let him do it, and just hold him (big boys DO cry). Then if the worst happens, give him a couple of weeks and get him to the pound, there are babies who need homes, and your better half is going to need somewhere to pour his love (other than you of course). Good thoughts coming your way.

@Cat Lady:
I heard Ed Schultz interview a school administrator from MN about his school district’s decision to tape and review for content the president’s message to students. It was a very disheartening listen. I honestly do not have any problem if parents request that their children be exempted from watching and discussing the president’s message. But I do have a problem with them wanting to deny that experience to everyone (shades of book-banning attempts in my highschool). And, the MN school administrator seemed to admit that the intensity of protests had struck fear into the hearts of his superiors. It is incomprehensible to me. I try to place myself in the shoes of people who do not support the president. Lord knows, I despised Bush (but at the seven month mark it was mostly just disgust for his nomination of John Ashcroft to be AG). Would – at the height of my anger with Bush – I have thought it dangerous or outside his portfolio to make a national address to school children about staying in school and studying hard? I don’t think I would have. I don’t think it would have occurred to me. I would have thought he was a lousy role model, but I would not have been concerned about indoctrination. There are some absolute loons out there.

Totally agree. Something about school kids being kept from seeing the President speak is just the last straw. They are disrespecting the office of the President. They don’t believe he’s the legitimate President and they will do anything – anything – to undermine and get rid of him. It’s scary.

A few months ago, Ana Marie Cox was on Rachel’s show and confessed that she still had a soft spot for John McCain. Given McCain’s despicable Joe McCarthy style campaign, that confession alone should be sufficient grounds to disqualify Cox from ever hosting a show on MSNBC or CNN.

@Anne Laurie: This is pretty much what I was thinking when I read your question. And as odd as it sounds, your dog may just dislike said staffer. My friend has a dog, who is sweet as can be, but without warning will hate someone on sight – bark and growl at that person for no discernable reason.
Dogs are uncanny in many ways. When I got divorced, if my ex stopped by, he couldn’t get within 3 Danes of me. Before that, they loved on him.
So, barring a medical reason, personality conflict may explain it.

I also (too) didn’t know AMC was a McCain supporter. Hell with her, then.
But even if she had exquisite taste in presidential candidates, her voice and those weird flopping fluttering hands would be enough to turn me off. Hand gestures can be powerful, emotive, reinforcing, amusing, crude — and be very effective. But with Ana it was as if she had read an advice column suggesting she “use her hands” and she just went all zoidy with them, with gestures totally unrelated to anything she was saying.

Hey, those are my cats! I sent that photo in nearly two years ago. Glad to see you hang on to them.
