Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans in disarray!

You can’t love your country only when you win.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

No one could have predicted…

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

The revolution will be supervised.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Second rate reporter says what?

Well, I guess I can be happy that the Giants aren’t the biggest disappointment in the NFL this season.

I’m about 3 hours away from selling my ticket to next weeks Giants game to an Eagles fan friend of mine. Who wants to sit in the cold (and maybe rain or snow) to watch a meaningless game?

I’m a Raider fan. The team hasn’t won more than 5 games in a season since before the (second) Iraq war. About all we have are games like this where the Raiders can at least make an impact on the season by beating a team that’s playing for something.

If I were a Steeler fan I’d be disgusted today too.

I don’t think it’s any sort of conspiracy, I just think that NFL officiating is lax in some areas. I don’t object to replay, I just think that they should adopt professional referees as well.

Keep doing something successful until your opponent can prove they can stop you.

The ‘Boys had a good formula when they had Julius Jones as their 1st half running back, then brought in Marion Barber in the middle of the 3rd to slash away at a then-tired defense.

They trade away Jones, draft another speedster in Felix Jones; but, have never returned to the formula of using their speed to tire the defense before sending in their “closer” in Barber to finish off games. Barber has never impressed me as a starter.

I was actually hoping for Texas to lose last night so we could have a Alabama-Cincy championship, with Texas-TCU and Florida-Boise as lead-ins.

I still like Florida-Boise, although these big schools that don’t make the title games will often phone it in against what they consider to be “lesser” schools.

@D-Chance.: The bowls make the picks. Alabama vs. Texas is likely according to the experts’ projections. Georgia Tech is in Orange and Florida is in the Sugar. Those are locked in. Rose is already set.

I think the Fiesta gets the first two picks. I read on CNNSI today that they have the ability to select two of the undefeated teams to set up their own battle of unbeatens.

I love the historical parallel of Texas going back to Pasadena as an underdog in the title game. No Vince this time though…

    @D-Chance.:

    So… BCS predictions?
    __
Alabama-Texas for the championship. Does the BCS committee match up Cincy, TCU, and Boise against each other, or do they set up 3 games featuring small undefeateds vs one-loss big schools?
    __
I was actually hoping for Texas to lose last night so we could have a Alabama-Cincy championship, with Texas-TCU and Florida-Boise as lead-ins.
    __
I still like Florida-Boise, although these big schools that don’t make the title games will often phone it in against what they consider to be “lesser” schools.

I don’t think you get any kind of “BCS Buster Showdown” type matchup, and instead, you get the scenario you’re describing with the spoiler teams scattered throughout the landscape.

Rose Bowl (It’s locked it, but whatever.): Ohio State vs. Oregon

    Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Cincinnati

Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Iowa

Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. TCU (delicious.)

BCS National Championship: Alabama vs. Texas

    @D-Chance.:

After last night’s game against Nebraska, Texas deserves to drop in the polls. In what was basically a home game, in a climate-controlled stadium, the Longhorns needed a last second field goal? Meh.

I’d like to see Alabama-Cincy. I’ve been a big fan of Brian Kelly’s offensive schemes since he was at Grand Valley State (who, btw, is going to the D II Championship game again).

Why does Arby’s sound very appealing right now? I haven’t eaten there in years.

I get that urge sometimes. Don’t have one in the area, but sometimes I get to jonesin’ specifically for an Arby’s sandwich.

Same thing with Whataburger (a Southern chain). Haven’t been to one in years, but I liked their mustard-oriented approach to burgers, as opposed to the usual mayonnaise/ketchup bias. I associate Whataburger with beach trips in Florida. Haven’t had one of those in years either. Sigh.

    Well, it’s all set.

Cincy-Florida could be fun. The Bearcats have an offense that can keep up with the Gators. Georgia Tech and Iowa could be awesome. The only downside in the TCU-Boise matchup is the stigma that many fans will still attach to the winner (yeah, undefeated, but what BIG NAME schools did they beat?).

Now, the fun begins. Army-Navy next week. Fist bowl game the week before Christmas, then a frenzy over the next 3-4 weeks.

…so finally, finally, we can stop hearing about the ‘72 Dolphins.

I’ve got mixed feelings about those Dolphins. The ’72 team played an unbelievably weak schedule (the combined record of their regular season opponents was 51-86-3, and only two of those posted 8 wins in a 14-game schedule), BUT they played a large chunk of the season with their second-string QB (Muskegon High’s Earl Morall), and despite their superior record, they played the AFC Championship game at Pittsburgh.

Oh, and with very few changes, the 12win-2loss ’73 Dolphins were probably a better team.

“the Patriots also lost and the Cardinals probably will.”

After the shameful choke to the Fins (and if Belichick just TAKES the field goal instead of trying AGAIN on 4th down, the Pats win-this team could easily be 9-3 right now) the only redeeming feature of yesterday was watching Brett Favre’s ancient, narcissistic ass get kicked in the game of the week.

that was awesome. I was at the first half of the game (driven out for the second half by a women in the next seat who was screaming her head off on EVERY SINGLE PLAY)

the D really stood up and did something. I heard on local radio the team practiced not being fooled by pump fakes which favre had been using to great effect.
