Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Usually wrong but never in doubt

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

“But what about the lurkers?”

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

So interesting

This post is in: Media, Assholes

Via TPM, Slate’s Jack Shafer has a spot on take-down of the nation’s most vacuous “journalist”:

“It’s interesting, Harry Reid is also somewhat crossways with the president on the issue of earmarks.”
—March 2, 2009

“Well, you know, what is interesting is when you talk to Republicans in Congress, they say, look, we know we’re not voting with [Obama].”
—Feb. 23, 2009

“Senator Gregg is an interesting choice for commerce secretary.”
—Feb. 2, 2009

“Each side [is] trying to make bi-partisanship a partisan issue. You know, I’m being more bi-partisan than you are. And that’s an interesting dynamic to see play out.”
—Jan. 25, 2009

“But one thing I found really interesting is [Bush] said he didn’t feel isolated in this job, which you’ve heard from other presidents.”
—Jan. 12, 2009

Time To Fire Up Operation Leper, Version II

by John Cole|  May 4, 200910:52 am| 107 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Clown Shoes

Multiple Choice Mitt steps in it:

In the latest instance of a high-profile GOP member taking a passing swipe at the party’s 2008 vice-presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Governor and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney jokingly dismissed Sarah Palin’s inclusion on Time’s list of influential people in an interview broadcast Sunday.

He asked, was “the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential people?”

Romney, appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” was replying to a question from moderator John King on whether Time’s inclusion of Palin and talk show host Rush Limbaugh on their list of “The World’s Most Influential People” was good or bad for the Republican Party.

Romney, who has not ruled out another White House bid, said he wanted more influential Republicans on the list before adding pointedly: “I think there are a lot more influential Republicans than that would suggest.”

“But was that the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential people?” he continued. “I’m not sure. If it’s the most beautiful, I understand. We’re not real cute.”

Well played, Mitt. Infuriate the part of the base that is smitten with Palin, and alienate any independent women by making remarks about Palin’s appearance.

Goodbye To The Globe

by John Cole|  May 4, 200910:09 am| 86 Comments

Looks like it is lights out for the Boston Globe:

The New York Times Co. said last night that it is notifying federal authorities of its plans to shut down the Boston Globe, raising the possibility that New England’s most storied newspaper could cease to exist within weeks.

After down-to-the-wire negotiations did not produce millions of dollars in union concessions, the Times Co. said that it will file today a required 60-day notice of the planned shutdown under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification law.

You know, I don’t cheer the demise of newspapers. I think losing something with the storied history of the Globe is objectively a bad thing. However, I am also hard pressed to think of anything the Globe has done since this blog started. Unlike a lot of other papers, I don’t even think I have ever cited it. Does anyone remember it leading the coverage of the Kerry campaign the way the ADN performed during the last election?

Maybe I am forgetting things, and maybe it really is a better paper and you all can jog my memory, but unlike the Times, the WaPo, the Chicago Sun Times, the LA Times, there just seems to be very little notable about the Boston Globe. Nothing stands out either good or bad. Am I wrong?

The Blind Leading The Stupid

by John Cole|  May 4, 200910:02 am| 49 Comments

This post is in: Politics, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

No good can come from this for the Republicans or the country:

Republicans looking to recover from Bush-era defeats are turning to an unlikely source for advice: top aides to former President George W. Bush.

Former White House press secretary Dana Perino, former Bush counselor Ed Gillespie and former White House deputy press secretary Tony Fratto are among those set to provide words of wisdom to House Republican press secretaries at their annual workshop this Friday.

GOP House Conference Communications Director Matt Lloyd said Perino, Gillespie and Fratto represented “the gold standard for Republican communications professionals” and were obvious choices to advise the party’s messengers.

This country can not handle another round with the Mayberry Machievellis running the show.

Frum Gets It

Say what you will about David Frum’s New Majority (possible motto: “Same bad ideas, but with less hate!”), he certainly seems to understand something about Obama that the rest of the Republican party has not figured out:

Let me add here a personal editorial comment. A large part of the secret of President Obama’s political success is his self-presentation as calm, judicious, and fair-minded – and his ability to depict his opponents as intemperate and extreme. You’d think by now that Obama’s opponents would have figured out this trick. You want to beat him? Great. Be more calm, more judicious, and more fair-minded. Don’t be provoked. Don’t throw wild allegations. Don’t boycott. Don’t lose your temper.

Instead, we get Anger Theater. It’s not smart. And it’s not working.

I wonder when the rest of them will figure it out?

Not likely

Reihan Salam is supposed to be one of those sane Republicans that we always hear about. This shows he is not:

With Specter running in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary in 2010, Republicans have a perfect test case. There’s an excellent chance that a primary candidate from the Democratic left will give Specter a serious fight, opening him up to a vigorous challenge from a Republican reformer. That challenge will probably come from Pat Toomey, who, as head of the Club for Growth, has emphasized tax cuts above all else. But as a Senate candidate, Toomey will have to connect with voters in a state hard hit by industrial decline. To have even the remotest chance of winning the seat, he’ll need to offer effective solutions on health care, energy and transportation. This might not come naturally to Toomey. But if he can pull it off, and if he can claim Specter’s scalp, he’ll become the face of a revitalized GOP.

I predict that Pat Toomey will be elected Senator from Pennsylvania right after Noam Chomsky becomes the governor of Idaho.

Hard-right Republicans don’t elections win in states that Obama won by double digits. It just doesn’t happen. Look at that goddamn registration figures for Christ’s sake.

Calling All Moderates

Michael Steele unveils the newest strategery:

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele appealed to the political middle Friday to join his party but added that the party itself wouldn’t moderate.

“All you moderates out there, y’all come. I mean, that’s the message,” Steele said at a news conference. “The message of this party is this is a big table for everyone to have a seat. I have a place setting with your name on the front.

“Understand that when you come into someone’s house, you’re not looking to change it. You come in because that’s the place you want to be.”

Steele talked to reporters at the Radisson Hotel in downtown La Crosse before addressing party faithful to kick off the state party’s annual convention this weekend.

Couldn’t he just meet Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins in Washington, rather than asking them to go halfway across the country?

And he still fails to understand what is happening. Once Collins and Snowe are drummed out of the party, the definition of what is “moderate” will change yet again. The music will stop, and Lindsey Graham, with his ACU rating of 90, will find himself without a seat because he isn’t conservative enough.

It is already happening with Chuck Grassley (ACU rating of 76), who the conservatives are trying to screw out of the Judiciary seat because of insufficient fealty to the cause. Jeff Sessions of Alabama is their choice. He’s a “real conservative.” The same with Orin Hatch, whose ACU rating is only 80. He recently pointed out that conservatives aren’t going to win a fight over the Souter Supreme Court seat, and I am sure we will soon learn how he is insufficiently conservative and needs to be purged. Plus, he talks to Ted Kennedy.

Only the completely crazy need apply to the GOP.
