Two Questions

by John Cole|  December 29, 20099:25 pm| 136 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Two quick questions:

1.) One of my big projects for this upcoming year is to digitize the family picture albums. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good scanner as well as good software that will allow you to add commentary to pictures for just this sort of project?

2.) I’m moving in a couple of months (we can talk about that later), and I think I would like to add a saltwater fish tank to the new house. Not one of those massive ones built into the wall that would make me look my place look like a Miami coke dealer’s, but just a decent sized tank to place. I’m not really much of a fan of domestic fish tanks, and the saltwater ones always seem to have much better looking fish and look cleaner. Approximately what kind of money are we looking at, and more importantly, what kind of man hours to keep a tank clean and appealing and healthy for the fish?

Also- Kennedy Center awards. I’m a big fan of Dave Brubeck- DougJ can not stand him. We both agree on Miles, though.

When Brubeck’s sons were introduced to play a medley of his songs, he gave a bewildered smile and said “Son of a bitch” and then grinned ear to ear. It was really nice.

And 100% of Popes are Catholic

Here is the MSM’s go-to guy on terrorism, Rep. Peter King (R, NY), on Fox News:

The fact is while the overwhelming majority of Muslims are outstanding people, on the other hand 100% of the Islamic terrorists are Muslims, and that is our main enemy today.

We are to the point that merely exposing yourself to right-wingers makes you dumber.

Who was on the old NFL announcing team with Vern Lundquist and Mark May in the 90’s on TNT?

I always thought that was my favorite NFL announcing team, and never understood why others did not rave about them.

Then again, I like Dierdorf, so what do I know?

BTW- here is a pretty cool site I recently discovered. Usually just a pic or a video link a day, but fun.

Jesus Christ, where’d you get that Cadillac

I agree with Atrios and Bob Herbert that the so-called “Cadillac” tax on health care benefits is a terrible idea. The name itself conjures up images of welfare mothers driving Cadillacs and young bucks buying T-bone steaks with their welfare checks, and that’s no accident — the name was chosen in order to make it sound like a tax on the wealthy and wasteful when in fact it will hit a lot of middle-class people, as Herbert demonstrates in detail.

The thing is, it will be rightly seen as a tax on the middle class no matter what they call it. I know that I mock Chris Matthews and other Villagers when they base their political prognostications on what their cranky, ethnic uncles are saying, but the fact is that I find my own cranky, ethnic uncle to be a pretty good barometer of things. And his biggest objection to the Senate bill is the tax on health care benefits. He said to be, pretty much word for word “They call it a `Cadillac’ tax, but people like me are going to end up paying it too. It’s a big scam.” I don’t think he’ll be the only way saying it.

Update. Ezra Klein completely disagrees, saying that is a legitimate tool for reining in health care costs.

This goes to the one place where I sympathize with the firebaggers — there are things about the politics of the Senate bill that are deeply worrying to me.

Otherwise Occupied

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Greg Sargent Avi Zenilman has a great observation here:

We finally found one Democrat willing to defend Obama’s national security approach from Republican attacks.

Rep. Jane Harman’s office sent us over her statement responding to the attempted bombing of Flight 253, where she raised concern about Al Qaeda in Yemen but also warned about the costs of overreaction:

***

Harman also defended America’s current efforts to go after terrorist suspects in Yemen and Pakistan, which Obama also did in his speech yesterday. “I think the case can be made for surgical counterterrorism actions around the globe to prevent al-Qaida from expanding its training and equipping of people who want to attack us,” she said.

See, that isn’t so hard. What happened to the rest of the Democrats?

If elected Democrats are anything like left-wing bloggers, the reason they are not defending Obama is because they are too busy flaming him for not turning America into Utopian Commie Franceistan in the first eleven months. Or they are busy screaming at the people who try to defend him.

Also, they probably hate Rahm Emanuel, too.
