Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Double Your Pleasure

This post is in: Domestic Politics, The Dirty F-ing Hippies Were Right

The NY Times is full of cheer today:

The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller home price index, a widely watched measure of the housing markets in 20 metropolitan areas, rose 0.4 percent from September on a seasonally adjusted basis. It was the fifth consecutive month that prices were up.

Underneath this apparent good news were some disquieting signs of deterioration, however.

But seasonal adjustments tend to hide any weakness in the cooler months, when fewer houses are sold. On an unadjusted basis, the index was flat in October.

“We’ve started to see the possibility of either a leveling off of prices for a few months or perhaps a double-dip,” said Maureen Maitland, the vice president for index services at S.& P.

One of the most frustrating things about politics is when you know one group of people is right about something, but they are just powerless to do anything. Krugman, Atrios, and dozens of others have been warning about a double-dip recession (Krugman was just warning about it on the Sunday shows), and the stimulus bill should have been bigger and not had all those ridiculous tax cuts, but because of the way our legislature is set up, nothing can be done about it.

That is what has been adding to my angst the last couple of weeks regarding the health care debate and the kill the bill folks. On a lot of things, I think they are absolutely right- the public option would be better, I think the mandates will be politically dangerous and suck, there should be more subsidies, single payer would be better, there shouldn’t be abortion restrictions, and so on. On so many of these things, I agree with the DFH crowd. The problem is, I don’t see any way of getting that done, and one of the things I like about Obama is he understands the art of the possible and takes what he can get. Personally, after the behavior I saw from Big Pharm, the insurance industry, the AMA, and medical providers, I’m to the point I would just nationalize the entire damned health care system like the British NHS. And I’m starting to ramble.

At any rate, the DFH crowd is probably right about the economic future- Atrios has been more right than most. And once again, they will be ignored and the centrists and the blue dogs and the self-annointed fiscal conservatives will rule the day, as we all go down the crapper together.

Bad news for Obama

I think we’ve done a pretty good job here at highlighting how much good news there is for conservatives these days. But we probably don’t spend enough time discussing how much bad news there is for Democrats. Here, Marc Ambinder explains why Bush-era policies are Obama’s fault:

(1) If, as ABC News reports, the plotters of the Christmas Day attack were released from Guantanamo Bay to Saudi Arabia in 2007, is the Second Term Bush Consensus about repatriation…the current administration’s faith in the Saudi Arabian rehabilitation system…the fragility of the Yemeni government…the entire Obama counterterrorism strategy?

Ambinder goes on to list ten questions for Obama about terrorism, none of them involving DeMint’s block of the confirmation of the new TSA chief.

The world’s greatest deliberative body

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, General Stupidity, Good News For Conservatives

This isn’t surprising:

An alleged attempt to blow up a transatlantic flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas would be all-consuming for the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration — if there were one.

Instead, the post remains vacant because Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has held up President Obama’s nominee in an effort to prevent TSA workers from joining a labor union.

[….]

DeMint’s objection creates a procedural hurdle that will probably take at least three days of debate and test votes to overcome.

It would be nice if a few Villagers here and there could take a break from bashing Harry Reid for not being Mike Mansfield and focus on crap like this.

Update. Ben Smith had a very good piece on this yesterday too (when he’s not quoting Bill Cosby and trolling for Drudge links, his blog is really pretty decent).

Update update.
My link at the top is to a McClatchy article. Here’s a somewhat extended version.

Cranky is endemic. I suspect this is one reason:

Perspective, my people. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, the days are growing longer… which will allow us precious extra minutes to contemplate the black ice that needs to be removed from the sidewalks & driveways. And then we come back in, huddle around the fire, and tell each other scary stories to beguile the hours of darkness.

Make The White Queen Run So Fast, She Hasn’t Got Time / To Make You Wise

This post is in: Teabagger Stupidity, The Wingularity

Writing for TPM, Ben Frumin reads the drivel so you don’t have to.

In a blog post on her website titled “It might be time now,” birther queen Orly Taitz seemed to suggest today a call to arms against President Obama.

Here’s the problem for Taitz and the rest of her psycho brigade. Rightwing punditry has left behind syndicated folk like George Will and Charles Krauthammer. Honestly, when was the last time that your far-right uncle got worked up about a Krauthammer column in the Post? Rightwing opinion has evolved into something much more like a free market, where professional hawkers like Limbaugh and Glenn Beck compete in a zero-sum game for attention with fly-by-night con artists like Sam Wurzelbacher and Orly Taitz.

Consistent with the free market idea, nobody on the right has “tenure” any more. South Carolina Republicans censured Lindsey Graham basically for talking with Dems about climate change. Teabagger leaders are basically at each other’s throats over who isn’t running right fast enough to keep up with the fringe. Rush Limbaugh knows better than anyone who his mob would turn on next if he told everyone to take a breath and calm down for a minute.

Orly needs to come up with something new and outrageouser just to keep up. Once your camp basically agrees that expanding health insurance coverage is literally worse than Hitler, where do you go? Even in America there are some things that you can’t quite say out loud. Did team teabag paint itself in a corner? Will a few overenthusiastic martyrs to the few speech laws we do have prove good for the cause? We should find out in a month or two.
