Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

“But what about the lurkers?”

So very ready.

A Nobel Prize in every pot

Apparently, Newsweek is going to put Krugman on the cover this week and include a letter from the editor saying:

Every once a while, … a critic emerges who is more than a chatterer—a critic with credibility whose views seem more than a little plausible and who manages to rankle those in power in more than passing ways. As the debate over the rescue of the financial system—the crucial step toward stabilizing the economy and returning the country to prosperity—unfolds, the man on our cover this week, Paul Krugman of The New York Times, has emerged as the kind of critic who, as Evan Thomas writes, appears disturbingly close to the mark when he expresses his ‘despair’ over the administration’s bailout plan. …

There is little doubt that Krugman—Nobel laureate and Princeton professor—has be come the voice of the loyal opposition. What is striking about this development is that Obama’s most thoughtful critic is taking on the president from the left at a time when, as Jonathan Alter notes, so many others are reflexively arguing that the administration is trying too much too soon.

A devoted liberal, Krugman hungers for what he calls ‘a new New Deal,’ and he prides himself on his status as an outsider.

What’s most important about Krugman right now isn’t whether he’s right or wrong but that he’s starting to get traction attacking Obama from the left. Obama’s stimulus package was, in my view, not as large as it should have been in large part because the debate was all about whether or not it was too big. The Geithner bank plan is drawing little scrutiny from the cable chatterers because Wall Street seems to like it and the Republicans are yet to produce their own alternative 19 page flow chart on the subject. In effect, for now, the economic debate in the mainstream media ranges from Geithner-Summers banksterism to Bachmann-Santelli-Shelby currency craziness/tax holiday idiocy/”let them fail” know nothingism. That is not a healthy situation.

It’s worth remembering that criticism of Roosevelt from the likes of Huey Long, Francis Townsend, and Charles Coughlin, crackpots though they were, played an important role in setting the stage for the Second New Deal. One can only hope that Krugman and his ilk will succeed in moving the debate from moderation versus right-wing craziness to moderation versus more aggressive policies.

The long con

Suppose that all of the money invested in S&P companies’ stock was in funds that charged a 1% management fee each year (this isn’t quite true but 1% is a pretty standard management fee). Now, suppose that the average price-to-earnings ratio at an S&P company was 20:1 (it’s usually slightly lower, but 20:1 is a pretty good approximation). Then for every dollar that an S&P company makes, some financial management fund gets 20 cents. That is, suppose that the total value of S&P companies was 10 trillion dollars. Then there would be about 500 billion in profit and 100 billion in management fees.

Under this model, which isn’t entirely inaccurate, financial services companies take a 20% cut of just about every dollar made in the United States. That can’t be true, can it?

In fact, the truth is worse in some ways. If you don’t believe me check out this Atlantic article by Simon Johnson. JMM provides charts and conveniently summarizes:

The number that jumps out at me is that at that peak point upwards of half the profits in the entire US economy was in the financial sector. And it’s been near or above a third for most of the last decade. Quite apart from the public policy implications, but rather in the realm of political economy, these graphs provide a revealing look at what the 2005 push to privatize Social Security was all about and what the implications of its success could have been.

The distribution of capital obviously plays a critical role in our economic system. But how on earth can it be so critical that financial firms are making half the profits, given that their primary role is to facilitate profit-making and wealth-creation in other sectors of the economy?

I’m not a hang ’em high anti-bank type at all. But the extent to which the financial sector has quite literally stolen from the rest of the economy is hard to overstate. To hear them complain now about “moochers and looters” is rich indeed.

Can We Get This In Writing?

Conservatives threaten to move to France Costa Rica:

Dallas Morning News columnist Rod Dreher may have to fly to Costa Rica if he wants to see some of his friends.

In one of his recent blogs, Dreher told of multiple people discussing potential moves to Costa Rica if things go downhill. These aren’t people who are eager to join Paulville. Rather, these are normal, middle-class conservatives who are considering moving to Costa Rica if the country goes downhill under President Obama.

One of the commenters on Dreher’s blog asked if this was not unlike liberals throwing a fit in 2004 and threatening to leave if Bush won. Not exactly. The left’s threat was always more of a threat to hold its breath if it didn’t get its way. The concerns of Dreher’s friends seem to have little to do with the election and far more to do with the results of Obama’s policies. So all this talk of leaving doesn’t remind me of Alec Baldwin’s threat to deprive our nation of his presence. Instead, it reminds me of a white Zimbabwean I recently met at a writer’s conference. She spoke with a longing for home, a love of a place thousands of miles away that she could only picture in her memories. Zimbabwe is not a place where one is able to prosper and thrive. At this time, many people wonder if the same thing could happen in America.

Until you show me the tens of thousands of applications for Costa Rican citizenship, this is right up there with “going Galt” and is exactly like those who threatened to move to France in 2004.

Stoned or Just Plain Stupid?

I see there was a lot of pearl clutching and plaintive wails about Obama murdering someone’s unicorn regarding Obama’s response to marijuana the other day, and I would like to note a few things. First, though, his response:

“…we took votes about which questions were going to be asked, and I think 3 million people voted or 3.5 million people voted,” he said. “I have to say that there was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high, and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation.”

The president then joked that “I don’t know what this says about the online audience,” prompting laughter from the roughly 100 people gathered in the White House East Room for the event.

“…but I just want — I don’t want people to think that — this was a fairly popular question,” he continued. “We want to make sure that it was answered.”

Some thoughts.

First, and this is directed right at the drama queens at Reason, who have turned into the most tedious online presence since the PUMA crowd (“Obama on Pot: Har Har Har, The Joke’s On You!”), Obama has never supported legalization. It was never a position he took during the campaign, it was never a promise he made, and the farthest I believe he ever went was to support some level of decriminalization, re-thinking rehabilitation, changing the way we deal with medical marijuana, and shifting many of these decisions back to the state.

Second, I don’t know of anyone who is suggesting that marijuana legalization is the key to economic recovery. I hear people throw out the “legalize it and tax it” stuff, but I don’t know of any studies that break the numbers down (if there are some, I would love to see them). For all we know, it might be a push economically. Considering all of the social costs of alcohol use and abuse, that is not unrealistic to think that perhaps marijuana might be the same. Personally, I would bet that there would be modest economic benefit to marijuana decriminalization and legalization, but an even greater societal benefit (in both cost and in other variables) to decriminalization and legalization. Regardless, anyone who thinks that in a $14 trillion GDP that marijuana will be a meaningful and substantive force to economic recovery probably has other reasons they want marijuana legalized.

Third, I would argue this is more a reaction to the folks “freeping” the online town hall with marijuana legalization questions than it is a deep insight into what Obama and the administration thinks. They have already made moves regarding DEA raids of medical marijuana shops, and we need to make sure they keep to that promise.

Fourth, when did it become unacceptable to make stoner jokes? Has anyone told Hollywood? Has anyone told Seth Rogan?

Finally, I would like to note that Obama is, to a fault, a cautious politician. All these notions of him being a reckless radical lefty are creations of the brain-dead right, and there is simply nothing out there to suggest he is going to move quickly or radically regarding marijuana laws. It really does seem that a lot of people bought into the right-wing bullshit about this guy. He isn’t a socialist. He isn’t a radical Muslim. He doesn’t hate capitalism. He doesn’t hate Wall Street. He has gotten where he is by moving slowly, calculating, and being non-threatening. As we also discovered regarding gay rights, he doesn’t think there is any point to rapid change that will be overturned, and instead prefers slow, sustainable change.

I honestly don’t remember a time when people of both sides of the aisle projected their own beliefs so heavily on a guy and then felt betrayed or surprised when he didn’t behave according to those beliefs. The reaction yesterday among the right to his Afghanistan plan was just more of the same. They were actually surprised when he proposed a serious plan, with benchmarks and an actual commitment to defeating Al Qaeda and the Taliban and a pledge to increase troops and material support to the region. Where have you been for the last three years when Obama was stating his position on Afghanistan over and over again?

Long story short, there is nothing in Obama’s past to suggest he would suddenly support legalization of marijuana. There is no evidence that I am aware of that legalizing marijuana would be a significant measure for economic recovery. There was nothing in his response that showed any deviation from what he has always said. There is no reason for anyone who supports legalization to feel betrayed. You may not like his position, may not think it is right, but if you thought he ran on a platform of marijuana legalization you are either stoned or just plain stupid.

Find his official website here. Doogan apparently does not realize that the list of anonymous shouters with “hoods and torches” includes three founders of the United States of America.

Want to have some fun? Try reading this post about the GOP “budget” while watching Memento with a friend who has never seen the movie. The movie is a mindfuck and there I am trying to snort quietly, which only makes my friend think I am laughing at her for missing something important. Thanks, Gavin, you bastard.

The GOP budget plan is an epic fail in the same sense as the European Sega Mega Drive version of Zero Wing. The game could have been perfectly fine, but the mangled translation in one cut scene (“…All your base are belong to us”) had a weird resonance that will keep it alive on the internet forever. For some reason it feels fuzzy to see someone illustrate his own defects so graphically and concisely.

Naturally I couldn’t resist piling on. Then I found out that my entry looks a lot like this one at Fark (scroll about 2/3 down the page), which proves that someone else grew up at about the same time as I did*.

After looking at my creation for a while I realized that my plan beats theirs on every possible level. This is not even a concern troll comment. The GOP would honestly be better off if they listened to my inane plan instead of theirs. My plan even contains a practical plan of action.
In other words in five minutes, inspired by an embarrassment to both white people and hip hop, I came up with a superior strategy document. So did some dude at Fark. The scary thing is this might well be the very best they can do.
(*) I feel kind of guilty, so read his blog here. He also homebrews, which is kind of spooky.

I have been informed there have not been enough pet pictures this week, and it is true. I have been preoccupied with other stuff. Here are a few for you:

Not sure what I am going to do this weekend.

*** Update ***

BTW- the PJ adds come down next Wednesday, and google adsense is killing me. It refuses to accept my existing google account info when I try to fill out the damned form. Going through this and trying to figure out blogads again reminds me of why I liked PJ ads in the first place.

Also, the easiest way to support this website is if you use Amazon, to click through before you shop.
