I Think I Can Answer That, Josh

by John Cole|  January 28, 20095:39 pm| 34 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

It appears that Josh Marshall watched the same press conference we talked about below:

Rep. Boehner (R) just said that the GOP alternative stimulus bill will create over 6 million jobs over two years with half the amount of money of the Democratic bill. Anybody have any idea where he got that number?

I actually have a picture of House Republican study group researching that figure, and it might provide some clues to the origin of that “6 million” figure:

While there is every reason to be skeptical about the Democratic plan, because there is no way to know if this really will provide the job creation they claim it might, the Republicans are just flat out making shit up right now. Steve Benen has more.

The Republican Plan- More Bullshit (and Tax Cuts!)

by John Cole|  January 28, 20093:20 pm| 133 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

Eric Cantor, aka Harry Ellis, is on my tv touting the Republican stimulus plan, which for the life of me I can not find online. I have searched Boehner’s site, I have looked in the House Republican Study group, and I can’t find anything. Considering the Republican plan when the economy was good and the coffers were full was tax cuts, and the Republican plan when the economy was lagging was tax cuts, and the Republican plan while we were fighting two wars and the deficit was rising was more tax cuts, and the Republican plan for, well, everything is tax cuts, I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the Republican plan for economic stimulus is going to be… tax cuts.

Assuming they even have a plan.

Regardless, Cantor is claiming it will create twice the jobs as the Democratic plan, which seems to me to be taking the art of bullshit to the level of the sublime. No one really knows how many jobs the Democratic plan will create, if any (and I have my doubts that it will do anything but add more debt), but Cantor assures us the Republican plan, which I can not find, will create double the jobs of the Democratic plan. My own secret plan is even better- it will create TRIPLE the jobs of the Republican plan. I just am not ready to release my plan yet.

At any rate, as I sit here and listen to this moron, I keep hearing him say that the Republicans are dedicated to preserving jobs. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Cantor and the GOP spend the last few months openly rooting for the failure of the auto industry in the hopes that several million union jobs would go up in smoke? But now they are all about job preservation?

How any of these guys got elected again in 2008 is beyond me.

The sound of one hand clapping

It looks like the Republican War on Condoms was just the beginning:

The NRCC is banging the good old culture wars drum today, sending out a raft of press releases asking if rookie Dems from conservative districts back the inclusion of anti-sexually transmitted disease programs (in the stimulus package). (link)

and

Grassley launches porn inquiry

The “it,” of course, is pornography. And Grassley has seen it deep in a demurely titled section of a report from the National Science Foundation — a report that says NSF employees have been spending significant amounts of company time on smut sites and in other explicit pursuits. (link)

Do these fuckheads really think the American public is interested in this when we’re facing the deepest recession since WWII? David Broder and Dick David Gregory may get their panties in a twist about this, but I have a hard time believing anyone who’s about to lose their job gives a fuck.

Another Posturing Wimp

This post is in: Clown Shoes

Phil Gingrey feels the heat for telling Rush to stfu, and promptly puts his tail between his legs and apologizes:

Now more than ever, we need to articulate a clear conservative message that distinguishes our values and our approach from those of liberal Democrats who are seeking to move our nation in the wrong direction. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, and other conservative giants are the voices of the conservative movement’s conscience. Everyday, millions and millions of Americans—myself included—turn on their radios and televisions to listen to what they have to say, and we are inspired by their words and by their determination. At the end of the day, every member of the conservative movement, from our political commentators and thinkers to our elected officials, share an important and common purpose in advancing the cause of liberty, reigning in a bloated federal government, and defending our traditional family values.

Pathetic. Speaks his mind one day, goes running to lick Rush’s shoe the next day. I hope this gets a lot of attention so that the nation clearly understands: the Republicans in Congress are afraid of Rush Limbaugh, and will do whatever he says. I guess we can just add talk radio hosts to the long list of other things these wimps are afraid of, including gay marriage, people making their own decisions about their bodies, fair trials, accountability, etc. In fact, a better question is whether or not there is anything Republicans aren’t afraid of, except, of course, we know the answer to that- Harry Reid.

Deep Thought

If Republicans plan to deliver exactly zero votes for Obama’s stimulus bill, then why does the bill still have compromises in it? Screw them. Put the family planning stuff back in, take the tax cuts out. If we know for sure that passing a crappy bill won’t win any more votes then just pass a better bill. They won’t scream any louder. The political cost won’t be any greater. Also, and pay attention because this is the important part, a better bill is more likely to succeed.

There is literally no longer any reason to weaken the bill with provisions that only exist because otherwise baby Rick Santorum might cry.

Dumb As a Sack of Hammers

Via Harpers by way of Sully by way of the comments, this gem:

“Let’s just say that, that, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9/11, is brought to the United States to be tried in a federal court in the United States, under a federal judge, and we know what some of those judges do, and on a technicality, such as, let’s just say he wasn’t read his Miranda rights. … He is released into the streets of America. Walks over and steps up into a US embassy and applies for asylum for fear that he can’t go back home cause he spilled the beans on al Qaeda. What happens then if another judge grants him asylum in the United States and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is on a path to citizenship.” Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa)

I know there is some tough competition, but this has to be the dumbest thing said by anyone in the last twenty years. Is there anyone on the planet who honestly thinks that KSM is going to be released because he was not read his Miranda rights? And since when did King decide KSM deserves Miranda rights?

Aside from that, is there anyone on the planet who thinks that KSM will not be found guilty in any jurisdiction in the country? Anyone?

And even then, King’s primary concern is that KSM, once freed by an activist judge and allowed to roam the streets, is primarily a danger because he will…. apply for citizenship?

Here is an idea. Put King in Gitmo and allow KSM to represent the people of Iowa. They will be better off.

The Daily Show already dealt with this:

It really says a great deal about the current Republican party that virtually anything they say can be used as the foundation of a comedy skit. Not to mention, the Colbert Report, a pretty successful show, was designed SOLELY as a vehicle for mocking these nitwits.
