Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“woke” is the new caravan.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

We still have time to mess this up!

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

This fight is for everything.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

So very ready.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Most of you should go to bed and try to be better Jackals in the morning.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

The Party Continues

by John Cole|  January 20, 20098:08 pm| 187 Comments

This post is in: Politics

I couldn’t come up with a new and funny variation of AC/DC lyrics regarding the inaugural ball, so this post will have to do. You go to war with the blog post titles you have, not the ones you want.

Here is another thread.

*** Update ***

Oh, it is on:

The Pittsburg Post Gazette said in today’s edition that Obama has a game ball from their victory in the AFC championship game Sunday over the Ravens. Dan Rooney and his son Jim personally delivered the football to Obama Monday night in Washington, D.C.

Obama also met with Dan and Jim Rooney in a separate room at the Hilton, where the pair gave him the game ball. “He’s a Bears fan first, he admits that,” Dan Rooney said yesterday at the Steelers UPMC training center. “But he’s a Steelers’ fan. He’s said it, and all his staff, they’re rooting for us [in the Super Bowl].”

Seems fair, since the Rooney family came out for Obama. And it is PittsburgH.

*** Update #2 ***

You can’t see it in the normal feed on CNN, but on the HD feed of Obama speaking at the Commander-In-Chief Ball, right over Obama’s right shoulder in the lower left hand corner of the screen, the gentleman standing there in the shot is Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston, who just so happened to be my First Sergeant when I was in A Trp, 1/11th ACR in Fulda, Germany. It has been close to 20 years and I swear he doesn’t look like he has aged a day. Even has the same expression. I spent so much time in the field with him I still could pick him out walking in the dark just from his stride.

Small world.

I pledge to ridicule Andrew Breitbart and Big Hollywood

by DougJ|  January 20, 20096:26 pm| 61 Comments

This post is in: Assholes

Andrew Breibart has an incoherent post at Big Hollywood taking issue with a video some celebrities did. It bears the ominous title:

I Pledge to Ridicule Celebrities Who Refuse to Recognize We Are At War With People Who Want to Kill Them, Too

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. For example:

Moore’s nauseating video — which, like Steven Soderbergh’s “Oceans” franchise, grants a pristine look into the modern celebrity’s sense of self-importance — is not a sign of desire to serve the country under Obama. Watch, by March this pledge like New Year’s resolutions will fall by the wayside. It is a sign that the Democrat is in the White House now. It is a sign that they get to sleep again in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Uh, what exactly does that have to do with Oceans 11, 12, and 13? He realizes those movies are fiction, right?

I can’t write about Breitbart without including this gem from his recent Washington Times piece:

Tanned, coiffed and seriously cut, these young studs could be tossing free-trade legislation across the halls of the Cannon House Office Building faster than you can Twitter “The Bella Twins.”

It took me a while to figure out what jumped out about this quote. It’s not teh ghey, it’s that he’s perving on teen-agers.

This pet pic kind of sums up how I feel right now:

In another thread, we were talking about how much we all love Sousa, and as I write this it is blaring on the parade route.

It looks like the corner of 300 Bush Street in San Francisco has been given a makeover (via a reader email):

Change you can believe in.

The Best Rest Home in the Nation

by John Cole|  January 20, 20093:02 pm| 77 Comments

This post is in: Politics

CNN is reporting that Ted Kennedy had a seizure at the luncheon, and Dana Bash is reporting that Robert Byrd had a “health issue” as well. Of course we hope everything is ok, but we really need to start thinking long and hard about some practical matters when it comes to age and public service. There is nothing you can say that will convince me that Strom Thurmond was with it in his waning years, and I suspect the same is true of Byrd. Due to Kennedy’s type of illness, he probably does not need to be lumped in with the other two, but the point still stands. Do we need an age requirement at the upper end?

*** Update ***

For those of you wondering why you were having a hard time watching the inauguration online, this email from CNN is a hint why:

Although, this is preliminary data and it may very well be higher – according to early data, as of 1p ET today, CNN.com Live served more than 18.8 million live video streams globally since 6a, shattering its all time total daily streaming record set on Election Day with 5.3 million live streams. (Source: Omniture SiteCatalyst, global). Additionally, CNN.com Live served 1.3 million concurrent live streams during its peak, which occurred immediately prior to President Obama’s inaugural address. (Source: Internal CDN monitoring data).

Let the impeachment proceedings begin

by DougJ|  January 20, 20091:42 pm| 165 Comments

This post is in: Assholes

Drudge/Breibart/Fournier are pimping the “Obama flubbed the oath” meme that we’re sure to hear a lot about from the Village and Wingnuttia:

Chief Justice John Roberts swore in President-elect Barack Obama as president of the United States on Tuesday, helping him through a slight stumble in the first of what could be many important interactions between two men who rose to their positions of power quickly and who have some background similaritities, but whose politics differ.

TPM has the correct details: Roberts misstated the oath slightly and Obama noticed (link corrected).

Clearly, this means that the inauguration is not valid according to a strict interpretation of Article 5 of the Constitution. I believe that, technically, this means that Ted Stevens is now acting president “until such time as the oath is properly administered”.

Achievement Unlocked- POTUS

The oath has been administered, and Barack Obama is now the President of the United States of America.

Remember that frequent commenter Renato is at the inauguration, and hopefully will have some pictures up to go along with his tweets.

Also, I note the DOW is down 140 . I suppose it is not too soon to begin impeachment proceedings.

*** Update ***

New website for the White House, complete with… a blog. Hopefully their blogger shows up for work in pajamas. Suck on that, MSM elitists.

Also, I am not sure how many of you saw it on your feeds, but on CNN there was a brief shot of Joe Biden taking pictures on a digital camera, then turning around and handing the camera to the giggling Obama kids. Probably my favorite part of the show.

Inauguration Live Blog

This post is in: Politics

I am fooling myself if I think I am getting anything done until after this is over, so might as well live-blog this. I am watching on CNN on the off chance Toobin is on, because he is consistently the most interesting person on cable.

George Bush looked so old when he walked in, and I still really respect him. I loved being in the military when he was President.

Bill Clinton looks pretty damned good. Looks like he has lost some weight.

I don’t know if there is a more adorable set of kids than the Obama young’ens. Where is their dog, damnit?

11:29 am- IM from Tim F. “This is like watching Troy (Polamalu) run back an interception for an hour and a half.” Did I mention the Steelers are going to the Super Bowl?

11:30 am- My goodness that is a mass of humanity assembled there today. I bet the porta potties are a disaster.

11:32 am- Someone should tell John Boehner the fake tan thing doesn’t work in January for folks from sunny… Ohio. On the other hand, it does give something to throw back at Republicans when they trot out the Pelosi face-lift stuff.

11:36 am- Bush and Cheney introduced. Crowd seems well behaved. Cheney in a wheelchair.

11:44 am- The man of the hour is introduced. I still can’t get over the size of the crowd. Obligatory “Obama” chant, no sign of the wave being performed. Yet.

11:47 pm- DiFi is speaking. In unison, 10,000 overwrought bloggers begin writing posts titled “That isn’t change you can believe in.”

11:48 pm- Rick Warren introduced to a smattering of applause. I have no ear for what he is talking about, so I have no way to judge it.

11:53 am- Have not been a church-goer for years, but I still know the Lord’s Prayer. Never understood the difference between the “trespass” v. “sins” versions.

11:54 am- Aretha Franklin introduced. Quite literally, the fat lady is singing for the Bush administration.

11:57 am- Robert Bennett looks almost exactly like a dear family friend from my hometown.

11:58 am- John Paul Stevens looks old, but still energetic. Biden sounds pumped.

11:59 am- Biden sworn in. Contrary to some rumors, Cheney did not disappear in a puff of sulfurish smoke.

11:55 am- Aretha Franklin is still full of win (and wind, I suppose). Some pipes on that woman.

12:00 am- Now we rock out to some mad cello in a composition by John Williams. If Jar Jar Binks pops up, I am chucking the remote at the tv.

12:02 pm- Wolf Blitzer just announced it is past noon and that Obama is the President without the oath. That can’t be right, can it? It isn’t official till the oath, right?

12:05 pm: Chief Justice Roberts is administering the oath. Couple of stumbles. Did the oath change midstream or something?

12:06 pm: It is official.
