Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Sign O’ The Times

by Tim F|  November 25, 20098:26 am| 123 Comments

This post is in: Media, Republican Stupidity

Ross Douthat dreams of a Republican who understands and can talk about policy. Just imagine. For a change Sunday newschat shows might cover actual issues instead of serving as group therapy sessions for stupid angry people like John McCain, Eric Cantor and Joe Lieberman. The dirty little secret of DC is that nobody presses these guys on policy because they can’t possibly handle it. They oppose Obama policy because pancake rainbow phlogiston wolverines.

As long as we’re dreaming I’ll take my magical flying pony with the feature that makes it poop dollar bills. Plus flame breath to fight the dragons.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread

by John Cole|  November 25, 20097:22 am| 132 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I don’t know what the weather is like where you all are, but it is pretty nasty here. Not a hint of a chance of sun today, and the entire sky looks like a three day old bruise or a smoker’s cough or what I imagine it would look like in the world of Dire Straits’ Industrial Disease. Just pretty depressing.

I did have a question, though, and I am a little bit embarrassed I do not know the answer. Now that the trees have no leaves, when you look up, you just see dozens of bird nests. I know that birds come back to the same area in the spring, but do they re-use nests? Or will most of them fall down before the spring without maintenance. I suppose I could google this, but usually you all know more than google.

Also, several of you in the mint thread the other day wanted to see a picture to see if it was pennyroyal, so I grabbed some this morning. It is most assuredly mint, and some of the strongest stuff I have ever had. I took this picture on a white piece of paper so you could see how deep the green is:

mint

I have some stuff to take care of before going home tomorrow, so I will be back this afternoon, most likely. Use this as your open thread.

On Centrism

by John Cole|  November 24, 20097:50 pm| 120 Comments

This post is in: The Dirty F-ing Hippies Were Right

Larison:

Looked at from either side of the spectrum, Lieberman has been anything but interesting. He has been the reliable defender of the “centrist” consensus established in the ’90s that finally accepted welfare reform and insisted on U.S. hegemony abroad. In practice, this “centrism” can be used to justify the most extreme, violent and destructive policies, but it is considered reasonable and acceptable because it does not partake of “fringe” ideas and enjoys the support of respectable, “serious” people. The trouble for liberals who accept this consensus is that they feel a constant pull to align themselves with corporate and financial interests in addition to endorsing every military action and security measure imaginable.

Back when I was a full-fledged wingnut, I used to point to Democrats like Evan Bayh and Joe Lieberman as “good” Democrats.

I was (and probably still am) a moron.

Tuesday Night Adoption Story

The first pic I attached is of my boys when they were little, before I adopted them. They are at an adoption fair with their sister. No one ever looked at them. Sigh. Black cats are very hard to place.

The second picture shows how even with two chairs in the computer room, I have to get a third one sometimes–and I live alone. Raven is in the computer chair, and Shadow is on the hard-back chair.

Here is a link to the agency:

http://www.felinerescue.org/

I thank the cosmos every day that I adopted these two. My life would be so empty without them.

P.S. I know the pictures aren’t great. It’s also very difficult to take pics of black cats, especially when you are photography-inept such as I.

kitties

Consider this your open thread.

*** Update ***

sorry, forgot the second pic- I’m distracted.

The nerve of these people.

BTW- our only comment on the whole story was from DougJ: “I would still caution against assuming that this was anti-government right-wing violence unless and until more details emerge.”

Maybe This One Will Stick

Moran:

The Conservative Party candidate is conceding the race for New York’s 23rd District for the second time, saying he doesn’t have enough votes.

Doug Hoffman had withdrawn his first concession to Democratic Rep. Bill Owens, saying the race was close enough that absentee ballots could change the outcome in the closely watched New York Congressional race.

Now, Hoffman said he has no hope of winning.

Guy sure is quick on the uptake.

Also, Acorn.
