Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

He really is that stupid.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Curb Head Sneaker Update

by Tim F|  October 26, 20103:29 pm| 169 Comments

This post is in: Assholes, Teabagger Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

The guy who stepped on Lauren Valle’s head in Kentucky is Tim Proffitt, a volunteer regional coordinator for Paul. Proffitt came forward and apologized, possibly after a progressive Kentucky blog ID’d him as the perp. The guy who tackled her (and groped her, as far as I can tell from some frames of the vid) is apparently a guy named Mike Pizzano. If I was ReputationDefender I wouldn’t bother returning their calls.

***Update***

Proffitt has already disappeared from Paul’s internet pages (of course). Paul may have a harder time scrubbing the full-page ad in today’s Lexington Herald-Leader that cites Proffitt by name.

***Update 2***

The AP is full of it. Proffitt didn’t apologize at all. He downplayed the incident and blamed the police because they didn’t get between his foot and her head soon enough. In other words he’s the real victim here. Way to keep your eyes on the prize, kid.

    @morzer:

Yeah, I pulled that iin a comment at alicublog and pointed out that the accusation that “the police should have stepped in” is really square in the tradition of authoritarian followership that libertarians are supposed to eschew. Basically, the argument goes, the individual is not responsible for his actions at all–if government or authority doesn’t step in and tell you exactly what to do, or what not to do, then the individual isn’t to blame. Its a weird inversion of “society’s to blame.” Reminds me of the old phrase used of women with loose morals “no better than she should have been.”

Still not, actually, an apology for his actions but I believe that’s what the AP headline refers to.

“A friend of mine went up to three policeman before Rand got there, and told them about the girl who was standing there with that wig on and that she was getting ready to do something,” Profitt said. “The policemen looked at him and said that’s not our job.”

More fun from Box-o-wine, who has already speculated that the attackers were liberal plants (because they wore wingnut-wear; nice logic, counselor!), she’s followed up with another great theory:

AND: Perhaps the reason the crowd did not detain the men is that, in person, it did not look as brutal as it seems in the short video clip — a clip that has the words “head” and “stomp” near it.

See? We think it was an ugly, violent attack because of words near the video wherever Ann Franziahouse happened to see it tell us to, not because of, you know, the actual video.

I don’t know how, but it gets better:

Also, look closely. There is no head stomp. The head is on the curb, but the foot presses down on the shoulder. That ends pretty quickly. That restraint might be a reason to speculate that the men were part of some Moveon.org theater, but it could also mean that the men felt they needed to stop her — because she was in disguise and rushing toward the candidate? — and they reacted quickly.

Interesting admission that a lack of brutality leads her to believe that it was not actually Rand Paul supporters that did it. “I don’t believe it. Real conservatives would have surely killed her for her political views. Must be MoveOn plants. Pansies”

The Plum Line – Cops share more details on probe of stomper

UPDATE, 3:36 p.m.: The Lexington police confirm it in a statement, adding that Profitt is now a suspect (I’ve edited the above to clarify):

The Lexington Division of Police has identified a suspect in connection to the October 25, 2010 assault of a woman at 600 Cooper Drive.

On the 25th, at approximately 7:00p.m., officers were alerted to an active assault at 600 Cooper Drive (Kentucky Educational Television Studios).

Officers responded to the scene of the assault and made contact with the victim. She identified herself as a member of MoveOn.org and stated she was assaulted while attempting to take a picture with candidate Rand Paul. Division of Police patrol officers took an assault report and forwarded the case to the Division of Police Bureau of Investigation.

Today, October 26, 2010, detectives identified the suspect, involved in the assault, as Tim Profitt. Mr. Profitt is currently being served with a criminal summons ordering him to appear before a Fayette County District Court Judge.

    More from that linked story…

However: It looks as if this may not result in an arrest. Based on the footage of the incident, cops are treating the case for the time being as a fourth degree assault case, which puts this in the realm of domestic violence scuffles and barfights, she tells me. She says they’re treating this as a “misdemeanor, not a felony.”

Cops have to witness a scuffle like this firsthand in order to make an arrest, she adds. If they do identify the suspect, the victim, Lauren Halle, has the right to ask a judge at Fayette district court to bring charges. In other words, this is likely to be up to the court.

So what about the lady who rushed in and pushed away the guy holding the MoveOn woman down? I think she thought it looked brutal. And what about the man who came up behind her and talked Joe Stomper away? I think he thought it looked brutal.

@General Stuck: But, in a Bell County election report I received after my friend from Pineville spent a week with some childhood friends:

My friends from Pineville have been Republicans all of their lives. Two out of three said they will have a hard time voting for Rand Paul. They said, we are conservative, he is crazy. They didn’t have a problem with the outsider thing. They just think his positions are too extreme. They also blame the Northern Kentucky Republicans for this mess. They said if Bunning/Grayson feud hadn’t lasted so long, Paul would have never gotten the nomination. One of my friends has college-age kids. She said she is worried because the young people like Paul.

I’m somewhat heartened to hear this, as here are actual KY Rs who are troubled by Baby Doc.

A Rand Paul supporter is apologizing after he was seen on video stepping on a liberal activist’s head.

Tim Profitt, a volunteer with the Republican’s U.S. Senate campaign, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the camera angle made the scuffle Monday night appear worse that it was. He criticized police for not stepping in and says other supporters warned authorities about the activist.

There once was a deep strain of labor democrat voters there that sent folks like Conway to election victories, and a nut like Paul would never have become a viable candidate.

That was back in the days before civil rights movement (and well after for the most part) when the best shot most black folks had at a “good” job was sweeping floors in the south. It was before the days of Hispanics moving in and off-shoring of manufacturing and before Reagan crushed the Unions.

Many of the retired Teahadists raising such a stink remember the days when they could buy a home and support a family on one income and not even have a high school diploma.

Whatever the perceived provocation, any level of aggression or violence is deplorable, and will not be tolerated by our campaign. The Paul campaign has disassociated itself from the volunteer who took part in this incident, and once again urges all activists — on both sides — to remember that their political passions should never manifest themselves in physical altercations of any kind.”

Whatever you do, don’t read te comment section on McMegans’ blog. Some of her idiot followers are arguing that “he didn’t actually stomp her head, it was her neck and shoulder.”

I seriously want to punch one of these fuckers right now and go, “hey, don’t say I broke your nose, it was your jaw, get it right.”

I think they want to acertain the extent of her injuries. I’m sure there will be dozens of FreeMarket attorneys just itching to sue Profitt for a profit.

    Ironic name, he haz it.

Obviously the McMegan sycophants don’t understand how the neck and C-1-5 vertebrae attach to the head.

Because theirs is obviously attached to their pelvic vertebrae.

Well, they say the camera does add ten pounds to the force of a man’s foot pressing down on a woman’s head.

So the woman was going to approach Rand Paul with a sign and a paper to mock his approach to the event. What was the serious threat she posed: the possibility of a severe papercut?!

The Randians quite simply over-reacted to her presence. Instead of hastening to any police officer that ought to have been on duty at such an event and try to defuse through legal means any kind of embarrassing moment, they took matters into their own hands… and feet.

What’s horrifying about this incident is that A) the attackers believe themselves justified in attacking the lone woman, B) they attacked without thinking, jumping entirely by instinct into a fray that shouldn’t have even started.

The emotional state of our entire nation is on raw nerves now. We ARE at the point where violence is going to become a norm, not an accident.

    @PaulW:
Let me make this worse. They did actually go to the police first. The police said ‘You’ve got to be kidding me’ and ignored it.

Actually, I think the official phrasing was ‘That’s not our job’ but… yeah.

Check out the video with the sound up: as they’re dragging her to the ground, you can hear people shouting “Call the cops!” Like she was obviously doing something dangerous. With a piece of paper. You know.

Actually, my opinion is that it’s the cameraman doing the yelling, calling for help. I’ve noticed that one voice is fairly constant volume even though the camera has moved.

Even if it isn’t the cameraman, that may have been the intent – to protect her, not her assailants.

Kirk Spencer is pretty much right, according to a Kentucky blogger who was there (post link). The excerpt below comes from the comments, and is also from the author of the main post (comment link).

    __

By the way, the voices in the video saying call the police were absolutely positively not Rand Paul supporters. One of those voices was me. The people wanting the police called were the people wanting to get these goons off her and have the police investigate.
    __
To those who ask why no one intervened: I was less than 10 feet away. I did think about literally jumping in, but by the time I realized what they were doing and had that thought, they were already being pulled off her.
    __
It also occurred to me that it could quickly become a full-blown riot, and since the injury to the victim was over, I thought that wouldn’t help anything.
    __
I will testify in court against this guy. I got a real good look at him and followed him afterwards. I don’t think this goes beyond Assault in the Fourth Degree, but that is still a class A misdemeanor, and carries up to 12 months in jail. That’s a significant potential penalty.

    From Lauren Valle herself:

I have been at a bunch of events before, the previous debate, and the Rand Paul campaign knows me and they have expressed their distastes for my work before. What happened last night was that about five minutes before Rand Paul’s car arrived they identified me and my partner, Alex, who was with me. They surrounded me. There was five of them. They motioned to each other and got behind me. My partner Alex heard them say ‘We are here to do crowd control we might have to take someone out.’

This is way more than fourth degree assault. This is pound-me-in-the-ass-prison premeditated conspiracy stuff.

I dunno, if I saw 5 guys chasing a woman and then slamming her to the ground and kicking her in the head, I’d be screaming, “Call the cops!” too. I think you’re seeing bad motives where they don’t exist.

Remember when it used to be that the thing to fear was the mythical jackbooted government thugs wrestling our women to the ground and abusing them? Now, in reality, it’s the jack-tennishoed anti-government thugs wrestling our women to the ground and abusing them that are the big threat to our nation’s well-being.
