Even with the Hoosier Homeboy officially out of the race, Doghouse Riley remains a source of comfort & enjoyment to those of us in the Reality-Based Community:
Ross Douthat has a job at the New York Times because he spent fourteen months or so giving the Republican party free advice on changes it needed to make post-Bush. This did not exactly catch on, even with Douthat. (There is also the fact that the man knew the HTML for linkage, and could do it fifteen-twenty times per 800-word copy without flagging, which whatever Sulzberger is responsible evidently figured put him right in the middle of the Youth movement.)
__
Leave us remember: three years ago it was possible for Republicans to try to tell Republicans something. Not successfully, maybe. But possible.
__
George Eff Will, as any student of pop culture in the Middle Ages knows, has a job at several popular mass-market “journalism” troughs because he wears bowties. And because he remembered enough of his Greek & Latin Derivatives class to confuse the suits at ABC about his role in Briefingate, at least long enough for Reagan to win and the rules of broadcasting and ethical behavior to change.
__
Now, if you’ve ever found yourself suddenly plunged into seawater several hundred nautical miles from shore, and noticed a small assortment of straws floating by, you can understand what both Douthat and Will faced in 2009: a supposedly grassroots, supposedly transpartisan supposed political movement which was, obviously, just a cover for the base of their party, a base neither Douthat nor Will really chooses to share a neighborhood with. Or even a section of the country. Sure, both eventually “came around” after the third of fourth gulp of saltwater, but not altogether happily…
And finally, if you can find some extra scratch, this would be an excellent time to contribute to the Wisconsin recall:

What’s going on in your neighborhood this evening? Let this be a Distraction-of-the-Day Free Zone. I don’t even want to know what you’re grilling, if it involves sausage products.
PeakVT
The lake was unusually calm yesterday evening. Pix 6-10.
Cris (without an H)
Grilled salmon yesterday. I always get the farmed; the wild-caught isn’t fatty enough so it burns.

The Mr. Freeze/Tasty Cone/Whatever ice cream truck is down on the street right now with that stupid f-ing song blaring through the window.
BTW, if anyone gets the chance to see them, Okkervil River and Titus Andronicus is a good show. The first band in a recent show was not so good (they actually sucked), but those two put on a really excellent show. Very energetic.
Sentient Puddle
E3. Apparently, Minecraft is coming to the Xbox 360 with Kinect support.
I don’t understand.
jl
@PeakVT: Thanks for that pic. It changed my plans. I will gaze at that pic periodically today to calm my nerves.
SteveinSC
Fuck-it. I am Mr. Mom for my wife’s book club and I am cooking red meat, greasy hamburgers for her and her friends, so there! Also too, I am not going to clean the grill, I am going to cauterize it.
Jeffro
I’m confused…since Daniels was out of the race by the time this cartoon was drawn, who’s “Really Dull Guy”? Gary Johnson?
Anne Laurie
@Jeffro:
Pawlenty? He’s easy to forget, fersure.
Uncle Clarence Thomas
.

But this is exactly what President Obama said he was going to do in his election campaign – no ifs, ands, or buts about it, as everyone here remembers.

Salmon patties, me. Potato salad, slaw, toasted buns, tartar sauce. Much greenery.
arguingwithsignposts
@Anne Laurie: “Man on Dog Guy”? Shouldn’t Danziger use Santorum’s, um, “other” description? (probably not safe for a family newspaper, though)
Linda Featheringill
My tomato plants have blossoms. :-)
Seedlings have come up and are growing like mad and I need new containers. I’ve already used up the ones I bought and all available coffee cans with holes punched into the bottoms. May have to scratch around for something.
HOWEVER, that is a really nice problem as problems go.

This could leave a mark.

Comparing your opponant to Sarah(tm) might prove she’s actually useful, also, too.

@SteveinSC:
Glad its hamburgers. If you cooked w * * n * r s, and there were pics, you might end up a ruined man, by the scandal.
Hope your plan works, but it could go badly wrong if they like and you end up tapped to be Mr. Mom forever. And chewed out for not getting enough greasy burger.
kdaug
@Sentient Puddle:
Ugh. Love Siggraph, but I hated being sent to the E3 marketing schmoozefest before they killed it.
Is it any better in the new incarnation?
kdaug
@Comrade Scrutinizer:
Do please keep up.
Josie
@jeffreyw: Yum! What do you put in your salmon patties?
@Linda Featheringill: You can also use sour cream, cottage cheese and butter containers. Poke holes in the snap on lid, turn the container upside down and cut out the bottom. Then, when it is time to put the plant in the ground, just snap off the lid and plant the whole thing, container and all. My brother showed me that,and it works like a charm. It also keeps slugs, worms, and cats away from the new young plant.

@SteveinSC:
WANT.

Apparently Pelosi is calling for an ethics investigation into Weiner’s weiner pics.
Oh good lord.
Southern Beale
@trollhattan:
AH! Hahn’s opponent has been Pelosi’d! (You know how the RWers made “Pelosi” shorthand for “evul librul demon who wants to abort your babies and give you gay ones instead”)
Jeffro
@Anne Laurie: I think you’re right…I was thinking he’s “Minnesota whack job”, but that goes to Bachman (by a hair).
jeffreyw
@jl:
Damn, I hope these don’t get out.
jeffreyw
@Josie: These have a smallish onion, minced, 2 eggs, best part of a roll of Ritz crackers, chopped parsley, salt n pepper, rolled in fine bread crumbs and fried med low in butter.
PeakVT
@jl: YW. The little lighthouse is at the end of a breakwater that has been covered by the high water. See pic 2 for a comparison.
Southern Beale
And right on cue, Chris Matthews wonders if Weiner’s wife isn’t partly to blame.
Asshole.
Josie
@jeffreyw: Thanks. I’m taking notes.
SteveinSC
@jl:
Can I send out pictures of wieners even if I am cooking hamburgers?
jeffreyw
@Josie: I guess I should mention for the record that there was also a can of salmon in there. :)

I had a great opportunity today. I’ve been going around the neighborhood with a petition to keep our local library in West Oakland open – along with several other branches, its under threat of closure due to the budget crunch, of course.
This morning I saw through the window a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses coming up the stairs. Ran and grabbed my petition, met them at the door with it and asked them to sign it before they got a word out of their mouths. They signed. I thanked them, politely told them I wasn’t interested in the Watchtower, etc. but it felt like a pre-emptive strike of the first order.
I think I’ll keep various petitions near the door for any future visits.
TooManyJens
@Southern Beale: What the fuck? Mind you, I don’t know why I’m surprised, but still, what the FUCK?
trollhattan
@Southern Beale:
Is that something like getting a Nancy SMASH! from a giant, gay-makin’ gavel? Because she could go on her own bus tour, namsayn’?
(I dread, dread, dread this election cycle.)

Oil price speculation and Koch Industries. Quite interesting.
Josie
@jeffreyw: lol. And here I thought you went out and caught some fresh and ground it up yourself.

“iCloud” Okay, it’s “free” in Applespeak but…so what?
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2015245696_apustecapplemusic.html
What does this do that the Googles can’t already? I don’t see myself uploading 10k songs to somebody’s cloud, not without melting something in the process.
Villago Delenda Est
@trollhattan:
The entire “cloud” thing disturbs me on a fundamental level, but then again, I believe in backups for mission critical stuff, no one does this until they lose their mission critical stuff because they don’t want to spend the money for backup systems, it’s just too profit endangering.
Sentient Puddle
@kdaug: I should clarify…I’m not actually at E3, I’m just following along from home. I’ve heard a lot of stories from attendees who became pretty jaded about the conference too, but from where I’m sitting, I get to hear all kinds of crazy announcements, and I like it.
jeffreyw
@trollhattan: I may be wrong about this, but I think Apple will comb your HD for tunes, and then find dupes that they already have on a server somewhere, and serve these back to you where ever you are. Google wants you to actually upload your tunes.
Tonal Crow
@Southern Beale: Here we go again knuckling under to Republicans’ screaming and the protestations of the pearl-clutching bluenoses. And we wonder why Republicans get away with destroying the economy, torturing people and bragging about it on national TV, and even murder, while Democrats can’t get away with lying to reporters about a purely personal sex affair.
At this rate, earth’ll be a desert planet before we can have nice things, at which point there won’t be any nice things to have.
Yutsano
@jeffreyw: We’l discuss your sin of using curly-leaf parsley at a later date.
Right now I’m in massive trip-out mode. An old OLD ex who I haven’t talked to in years just messaged me today. It’s been a very weird conversation and he’s sort of implying he wants to possibly mend all the fences here. It won’t happen…but we’re still talking.
BethanyAnne
I’m glad that we’re doing an ActBlue page when I can scare up a little change for once. Go Wisconsin Dems!
kdaug
@Sentient Puddle: You’re a wise puddle. Best way to see E3 is in press reports. If you’re ever offered a pass, politely decline.
Kristine
Nothing fancy tonight. Y’day’s dinner was this, but today’s was fish fingers rolled up in a tortilla and a glass of wine, dammit. Gaby had a seizure last night, the first pet seizure I ever witnessed and her first, afaik. One minute, she’s bounding up and down the hallway with King, and the next, she’s flailing like she’s trying to get her footing on wet ice, pawing her face and drooling. It was over in a few minutes, and by the time we arrived at doggy ER, she had recovered, but they still kept her overnight for observation. Verdict? Nothing yet. Her metabolic readings were good. Blood panel normal. Lung and GI x-rays didn’t show anything. Could be a one-time thing, or some flavor of epilepsy, or things I don’t even want to think about. She’s home now. Spent most of the day sleeping on the couch because it’s hotter than hell outside and besides, she had the stuffing knocked out of her. She did eat dinner. I’m just keeping an eye on her.
It’s always the things you never expect that get you.
Joy
just contributed a little to the recall– feeling a little blue– in a good way–
Kristine, hope your Gaby will be ok.
Mike Kay (True Grit)
HA!
Weinergate drowned out Santorum’s presidential announcement.
Anne Laurie
@Kristine: Hope that was a one-off for your Gaby! Was it ‘hotter than hell’ when she had her incident? I’ve heard of epileptic attacks being a symptom of heatstroke, where a dog pushed past its limits on a hot day. Happened to a friend’s Lab, the dog would not quit chasing balls thrown into the lake, and his people figured he couldn’t overheat if he was soaking wet, eh? Wrong — apparently he wasn’t drinking enough, dehydration raised his core temp from the inside, IIRC. Couldn’t hurt for you to encourage Gaby to drink more on hot days (some dogs like ice cubes, others will take an interest if you add a little broth to the water dish) and maybe back off the stairmaster at mid-day…
Kristine
@Anne Laurie: It was actually cooler on Sunday–maybe 80F. But Gaby does have a very thick coat, even after a summer trim.
Her metabolic panel was normal. Body temp, etc. Would dehydration show up?
She doesn’t drink a lot of water in any case. She eats wet food–has to, restricted diet–so gets some liquid that way. But if she takes more than a couple licks from the water bowl, it’s unusual. She loves drinking out of the hose, though. I can put out a fresh bowl of cold water, and she will come stand beside me as I’m watering and wait for me to lower the stream to her level so she can drink. Maybe I should buy her a little fountain?
Kristine
@Joy: Thanks.
