Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Republicans don’t trust women.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

We’re not going back!

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

@burnspbesq: There is a fellow that swims at the same time as I do at the Y. He showed up a few weeks back with a broken ankle. Another person at the Y told me that he had broken it in the Himalaya’s and flew home to have it treated. I asked him how it happened and he said “Well, you know about K-2”? I excitedly said “YES, wow you were climbing there?” He sheepishly explained, “Well, my sons and I were visiting a resort there and, after dinner, the owner asked if we wanted to go up to the cricket field (pitch?) and play some?. On the way up I slipped and broke my ankle”! He did say that 6 sherpas carried him down to where her could get transportation so he had that going for him!

My sister sent me this touching and heartwarming story about a 26-toed cat named Daniel:

Cat’s 26 toes help boost Milwaukee animal shelter
    __
GREENDALE, Wis. (AP) — In a reversal of fortunes, a once-unwanted cat has come to the rescue of an animal shelter in need of a new home.
    __
However, this orange-and-white tabby named Daniel is no typical cat. He has a near-record 26 toes, a phenomenon that is helping the nonprofit Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center raise money to relocate to a new building.
    __
Normal cats have 18 toes, but Daniel has two extra on each foot due to a genetic mutation called polydactylism.
    __
Officials at the center found out their rent at a Milwaukee-area mall was being doubled on Jan. 1. So, the shelter is buying a new building and is seeking small donations of $26 — or $1 per toe.
    __
They’ve collected enough so far to secure the financing with about $80,000 raised since Oct. 24, but they hope to raise $120,000 by Dec. 23 so they can become even more financially stable. About $50,000 of the money raised has come from $26 donations.
“I’ve always been a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and this is definitely the case,” said Amy Rowell, owner of Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Greendale.
    __
She found Daniel in October at animal control when she went to pick up another cat. As she bent down to that cat’s cage, Daniel stuck his paw out and poked her head.
    __
“He was very clearly saying, ‘I need to be rescued, I’d like to be your friend, please pay attention to me,'” she said. “And when a sign is that obvious, we tend to not ignore it.”
    __
The shelter takes in animals that might otherwise be euthanized.
    __
Daniel was originally going to be adopted out, but Rowell has decided to keep him as a shelter mascot.

Saw this Politifact story highlighted by Steve Benen. Good golly Miss Molly.

The assertion looks highly improbable, from what I know of Willard Romney’s record at Bain Capital with regard to jobs at the companies he invested in. At the very least, it could do with some supporting evidence. But when asked to provide that evidence, the people who created the ad just refused. If the evidence does in fact refute their claim, these people are asking to be exposed as liars. Romney’s campaign could wind up seriously discredited. What the fish are they thinking?

Judy Garland’s invaluable contribution to human happiness is her rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in “Wizard of Oz”. It’s the most stunningly beautiful, sublime female vocal rendition of any song ever, one that wears soothingly on the soul of listeners as well the thousandth time heard as the first.

It’s tragic that Garland’s personal life was too much of the time a Hell of alcohol, addiction, and unhappiness, unlike the Dorothy character she so perfectly played in “Wizard of Oz”.

Noodler, that sounds like fun. Too bad the presents I wrap look like I put Tunch and Rosie inside them. My husband wraps gifts like a department store pro, though.

Last year the boys were old enough to start a tradition of us going to the toy store just to buy a toy for each of them to put in the charity box. My oldest remembered from last year and was excited to “help out Santa” by picking a race car for another little boy. Both boys love being picked up by their dad to drop the toys into the giant bin. I was pleased this year at how full it was only one week into the season.
