No matter how long we have them, it’s never long enough.

So hard to say goodbye to them, but at least we can do for hem something we can’t do for our fellow humans – make sure their exit is quick and painless.
My condolences to the family. I’ll be joining that club soon enough, don’t see how my pup is going to last out 2012. She’s still happy and eating like a pig, and that’s what counts, but she’s just breaking down everywhere.
Someone posted a link to this earlier and like many others I had tears in my eyes. It’s always difficult to let go. RIP

I know, for a few seconds there I thought Louis C.K. had died.

RIP, CK, in a land full of belly rubs and ham. You’re in my thoughts, Oliver.
They are just dogs… but those of us who’ve loved them know them as something more. I recently lost the other end of the doggy size world – the hole is the same size.

My own dog (an Italian Greyhound) is ten years old, and though they tend to be one of the longer-lived breeds (15-20 years is not at all uncommon)…she’s beginning to show some gentle signs of aging, enough to remind me of her inevitable mortality. I’m going to miss her just as terribly as Oliver misses C.K., and cry for I don’t know how long at the terrible hole she will have left behind, and the lack of a canine snuggle partner on the couch will remind me of it for a long time every time I turn on the tv or read a book.
The upside is another fine canine will come along, and while not replace C.K., will bring his or her own personality and light up lives in a different way.
@Villago Delenda Est: The upside is another fine canine will come along, and while not replace C.K., will bring his or her own personality and light up lives in a different way.
I’ve known people who will go out and get the same breed and give the pet the same name.
Does not work. They are unique individuals. But while that experience can never be duplicated, we can have another great experience. And I can’t think of a better monument to love… than to give it out to some other being who needs it.
@WereBear: True, but when Eddie died, I went and got a black, male medium-hair kitten. While Harry is certainly different, he does share some of the same personality traits that Eddie did. And a lot of the others I hope he never does, since so much of Eddie, good and bad, was a product of all of the physical trauma he suffered over the years, and I don’t want Harry to go through the same.
Many condolences to Oliver. I know that I still miss the thump-thump of Eddie coming to join me in bed. A three-legged cat loses all of its ability to walk stealthily.
Likewise, Oliver might feel the pull of another mini Doxie one day. I’ve had three, myself. But you never tried to pretend Eddie had never left, and that was what I was objecting to. Heavens, it’s not like getting a new couch!

I’ve only read Oliver a few times and don’t know much about him, but I do know the pain of losing a four-legged friend. We put our long-time canine buddy down after his health seriously worsened a few years back. It hurt, but it was the right thing to do. The pain and loss will ease after time and at some point, you’ll be ready to bring another in your life. Condolences to you.
Best wishes, Oliver. You made me very happy with your posts diring the last Presidential election, and I have a vague idea how happy C.K. made you.

Condolences, Willis. It hurts to day goodbye, but you’re doing the right thing by preventing the suffering. When you’re ready, you’ll find the right furperson who, coincidentally, was looking for you.

As a fellow pet owner slave who has lost his own family members over the years, I’m so sorry to hear this. My wife and I talk about our departed pets while enjoying the companionship of our new ones. It keeps the memories alive, makes us appreciate their presence in our lives and savor the time spent together, building fond memories.
Best wishes Oliver.

I know the feeling all too well. We had to put our 16 year-old dacshund Sasha down over the weekend (who looked a lot like CK). After a battery of seizures left her blind and unable to walk or function, we had no choice.
It’s especially tough with doxies because due to their size and build, they worm their way into even the tiniest spaces of your heart.

So sad. Condolences to Oliver and his family. C.K. sounds like a pup beloved by everyone. They were all lucky to have each other.

RIP. It takes some stones to do the right thing and not allow a friend and family member to suffer for no reason.

@WereBear (itouch): Ain’t it the truth. Our pup, who passed a few years ago, was 13 1/2…but it felt like a blink of an eye once he was gone.
RIP to CK, and condolences to Oliver.
