Commentor SiubhanDuinne reminds me that, to my shame, we have neglected to offer our very best wishes our northern neighbors, who offer us a model of reasonable social comity and a singable national anthem 365 days a year (for all the good it does them).
SiubhanDuinne also offered the Canthem video below. If you have a particular favorite youtube version, post it below, and I’ll front-page the “winners” later.

At a 2006 hockey game when the Oilers played the Ducks in Anaheim, some folks in the crowd booed the Canadian anthem. Next time the Ducks visited Edmonton, they got this response:

Hoping for some of the rain that is just south. It’s 74 in Eatonton and 104 here, 40 miles apart.
Oops, it dropped to 84 in 30 minutes!

@DFS:
If that had been a crowd of teabaggers, they’d probably have sung “You’re in Oil Country” over and over.

A federal judge has struck down central parts of hotly debated new federal regulations meant to rein in for-profit colleges that often leave students saddled with debts they cannot repay.

@Raven: We’re getting a big dose of that same front right now. The front yard is a mess.

Sorry for all of you heat sufferers. It’s been in the mid 60’s today and I’ve been in fleece all day.

Thanks, Anne Laurie! What an unexpected treat to be front-paged like that — really nice of you. The “Canthem” seems to be making the rounds just fine, but in case I failed to link it earlier this one deserves viewing and virality too:

Canada! Fuck Yeah!

@DFS: I remember that. I was never so embarrassed to be an American amongst Canadians. The response made me proud to be living in Canada.

And to all those whiny wingnuts who, after the Supreme’s ACA decision, bitch that they’re moving to Canada…
that’s one of the places where that evil socialized medicine resides ! Just waiting to get ya!!

@Raven: A few hours earlier, I was talking with a friend who lives at Lake Hartwell who saw warnings and watches flash across her screen. While jumping up and down, I said it ain’t gonna happen and it didn’t. (actually didn’t use ain’t and gonna)

Here’s a new one. There is a conspiracy theory about that is saying that a President Romney will turn SS records over to the Mormon church so everyone will be baptised Mormon after death.

@The Other Bob: well they could, couldn’t they. I can’t wait until all of MSM talks about how much he donates. The blond gal on the view already does this. Does she not realize that is why he’s a bishop. Why is this different than Scientology. I’m curious and I really don’t know. The only close up I got on the Mormon religion was a neighbor whose daughter was severely burnt when the toyota van she was a passenger in caught fire at a gas station. The wonderful mom convinced the burn center to release her daughter early because she had eleven children at home and it was difficult for her to stay at the hospital. Husbands don’t do much except earn the money. My son who was in third grade at the time used to read to the injured girl and the teacher tutored her. The husband, oh well, earning money and giving it to the church. Maybe he was a bishop also.

Where is Sam? Where is Kitten? We need some real Canadians to celebrate with.. Mary, I haven’t forgotten about you.

Just sitting around waiting for the fireworks, enjoying my socialized medicine. Neighbors did big Pride thing. Sat outside in my little deck in the shade enjoying the breeze, 28 degree weather (that’s 85 in Murka talk) and reading a book I bought from my neighbor’s fence sale (like a garage sale without the garage). Life could be worse.
Happy Canada Day to me! And to everybody!

Hey, “Canthem” rules! Y’know?
OTOH, if anyone did that with our unsingable monstrosity the wingnuts would start shooting.
At Canada.

This is OT.. but definitely a really neat OT..
Monday’s NYTimes puzzle is constructed by Bernice Gordon who happens to be 98. All day I have been whining about the heat and Romney and some folks have another life.

It’s 28 C in Toronto, low humidity, a sunny evening, and tomorrow’s a day off because Canada Day is on the weekend. We’re out gettin’ wasted.
JPL
@Canuckistani Tom: fun times..
but if you look at my new comment @ 28 will u still be partying and publishing when you are 98… I certainly hope so. Have fun.

It was 109 here today, (heat index 116) I have two of the window a/c units on. Cueball is moulting to the point that I think he is going to be naked in a week – ergo the entire air in the house is full of tiny white hairs which stick to every part of you, eyes, nose, eyebrows, chin, you name it. I am constantly rubbing my face to get them off and at this point I think I have rubbed my face raw. I have decided that dusting during this particular time is pointless.

Happy Canada Day. Thanks to our hosts for giving us a thread. Here’s the Canada Day 2012 Google Doodle for you to enjoy. I think it’s kinda cute.
This is Canada’s 145th birthday (if you count from Confederation Day), 63rd birthday (if you count from when the last province, Newfoundland, joined Confederation in 1949), or 13th birthday (if you count from when Canada has been in its current geopolitical configuration, since Nunavut was formed in 1999). We’re so wobbly on this “national identity” thing, we can’t even keep our country in the same shape for very long. :)

Just got back from a week in Canada. Flew in through Newark and out through Laguardia. Montreal makes those two look like third world airports. I have finally detected a flaw in Canada. The coffee is no better than the U.S. So they don’t do everything better.

Don’t trust reviews for buying books with a Nook, especially if there are only a couple. I bought a really, really bad translation of a biography of Simon Bolivar. The English looks like they stuck the Spanish and in Babblefish and published the results.
RedKitten
@JPL: SamKitten celebrated properly, with some ice cream. We’re visiting my folks, so I haven’t been spending much time near the computer. Wish I could celebrate Canada Day with some beer, but that’ll have to wait until, oh, sometime after January 21st or so, when SiblingKitten is born.

@RedKitten: Oh, that’s a cute picture.
Congrats on SiblingKitten; may everything go well and SiblingKitten is born healthy.

@Canuckistani Tom: We don’t have to do everything like them, do we?
My Israeli coworker (recent transferee from our Jerusalem office) — who won a Canada hat at our Canada Day party, amusingly — was a little dumbfounded when I told him about our slow formation and recent map changes. I guess such a thing had never crossed his mind before (which is odd, because he’s extremely well-travelled and has lived in more countries than I can keep track of).
Canada — blowing foreigners’ minds since 1867.

@Interrobang: Just a reminder: if shit gets too serious in the Union you do have volunteers to become the 14th Province. Just sayin’.
Interrobang
@Yutsano: I’m cool with that.
Reminds me of a story I heard from a friend: Friend has a friend who is a long-haul trucker who works a lot of cross-border runs. One time while driving through Texas, this guy heard a wingnut on the CB radio yammering on about how the US should invade Canada and take us over, and take our oil and fresh water. Truck driver FOAF said, “I don’t think you really want to do that.” Wingnut guy said, “Why not?” to which FOAF replied, “Think about it. Thirty million new Democrats. And they vote.”

@Yutsano:
I was extremely young when those latest two were officialized, which is no doubt why I remember the jokes about it being done that way because Hawai’i was only half-a-state, but Alaska was a state-and-a-half.
Yutsano
@Anne Laurie: Of course Hawai’i still has a royal family. And believe it or not a small monarch restoration movement. I highly doubt they’d opt for independence any time soon though.

What’s up for the evening? Just got back from Canada! In Ganenoque, they’re planning a Memphis BBQ and fireworks for Canada Day tomorrow. Might as well be the 4th (shh, say that very quietly)

@Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason:
I still think it would be awesomely cool if we got the 1st through the 5th off as North America Week or something. But that’s probably too socialist.
