Apparently, Romney seems to think that black folks really do love him — they’re just afraid to say so in public. He claims that after the NAACP speech, he was approached by black leaders — who presumably were blinking Morse code at him during the speech to show their support, but Romney couldn’t understand them because his decoder chip was malfunctioning — and these Negroes gave him a hearty clap on the shoulder and said there’s an underground lair of black Romney supporters somewhere.

Didn’t McCain say the same thing?
Don’t they all trot out this campaign version of, “I have a black friend?”
Linda Featheringill
At least he didn’t say “Some of my best friends . . .”
I have secret friends from Jupiter but they don’t care to speak just yet because they’re afraid of causing a stir.

Is it true then that the nice
spambotNigerian prince who will make us all rich is a big Mitt Romney supporter?Tony J
“Black people are people, my friend. And have been since 1978.”
jl
I have secert multimillionaire friends.
Not sure how many, ’cause c’mon, it’s secret.
When I find out who they are I’ll hit them up for some dough.
Bokonon
Like everything else the GOP seems to do these days … Mitt Romney’s support by black Americans is a secret conspiracy!
Warren Terra
My invisible secret friend is a dinosaur with laser vision and it can fly, which is way cooler. But politically less useful, I suppose.
Comrade Mary
I think the modern wording is “The lurkers support me in email”.
Xecky Gilchrist
Did he say “In their hearts, they know I’m right?”
Martin
Herman Cain
Michael Steele
Allen West
Alan Keyes
There’s literally 10s of people you could put on that list…
jl
@Bokonon: Watch for teabagger ‘splitters’ accusing Romney of being part of the secret Nobama machine. He’s throw the election!
Mitt shouldn’t have let word about that secret black friend out. Let his eye off the wingnut base for second.
Ash Can
Does he think anyone but the 27 percent dead-enders will believe this shit?

@Martin:
” Herman Cain

Alan Keyes ”
Steelt’s going rogue. A radical. He won’t be the secret friend. I will bet an email beear on that.
quannlace
Is it an underground lair or a volcano?
Right, Mitt. You have ‘secret black supporters’. Just like Scott Brown has ‘secret meetings with kings and queens and prime ministers.”
I was gonna type, ‘Is the whole GOP delusional or just assumes we’re that stupid?”
Take your pick.
dmsilev
Yes, but are his imaginary black friends all the right height?
These are important questions people!

@jl:
Charles Barkley is an ex black Republican. He even said he was doing it because he was rich and Republicans like rich people, of course he ended up voting for Obama for reasons that would make Limbaugh happy, but oh well. I’ll give Charles credit though, it was the most honest answer to “why are you a Republican” I’d heard in some time.

If Stephen Colbert’s photo-shopped pic of himself with his black/Mexican/Jewish/etc. friend did not exist it would be necessary to invent it.

Willard: “African-American leaders…disappointed in urban policy, disappointed in the economy. While we disagree on some issues like Obamacare, a lot of issues we see eye to eye.”
Given Bernie Sanders’ disappointment that Obamacare couldn’t be passed as a single payer plan, this same logic would suggest that Bernie and Mitt “see eye to eye” on Obamacare. Once more Mitt proves just how comfortable he is with the opposite of what normal people understand as “the truth.”
Of course, odds are that he just made this “anecdote” up…because I doubt that Cornel West or Tavis Smiley would be predisposed to conversate with Willard at an NAACP convention. But you never know.

Is that an secret black supporter in your magic underwear or are you just happy to see me, Mitt?
Lockewasright
If they’re secret blacks, how can we find them to ask them confirm or deny this claim.
GxB
I’d say there’s a touch of truth there, that number of black supporters is probably around the number of white supporters he has that also hide it. Recall that few if any of us white folk have shame to begin with…
Somewhat OT, but where’s Colin Powell these days? I honestly liked the guy and thought he had SOME integrity (for a Bushie) prior to the Iraq bullshit. I seem to recall him kind of giving the GoP the bird, then he sort of fell off the face.

Yeah, it’s a shame that black people don’t have Mitt Romney’s courage and honesty.
Wotta jerkoff.

@Bruce S:
And Romney has some sort of urban policy? First I’ve heard of it.

mittens speaks to his black supporters “in quiet rooms.”

@GxB:
Powell is pretty silent, but his former Chief of Staff from the Army who followed him to the State Department, Wilkerson, has been reading republicans the riot act non stop.
GxB
@Steve in DC: Ah, this Wilkerson fellow is on Cheney’s shit list. I’ve heard of him in passing, but now I’ll be following him more closely. Thanks for the refresher.
My theory on Powell is what he first hand saw, and was forced to participate in, lead to an intense attack of conscious. Maybe he’s not the great guy I thought he was, and knowing the shady mob he hung out with, it may be more self preservation than anything. Either way he has a hell of a memoir to write after Dick is gone.

@Martin: You forgot J.C. Watts, Harold Ford, Jr. and now Artur Davis.

I’m sure Romney thought he was clever calling the ACA Obamacare. Snide idiot.
Rush, a candidate for MENSA, said that Romney’s speech went over their heads. I don’t have to exact words and I’m not going to find them and read them.
Wonder how many pills Rush had in his system when he said that.
quannlace
he had a book out about a month or so ago, and was making the interview rounds. Think he was on the Daily Show

You people laugh now, but just wait till the Republican convention when the camera spends all its audience shots on the two or three black people in the room. Then you’ll know they’re real.
Sort of apropos, has anyone else run into the book How to be Black by Baratunde Thurston? Hilarious. Relevant to this conversation, I especially like the chapter on how to be the black friend. And apparently it has a companion website
Mr Stagger Lee
Might do a wikipedia search for African American Mormons, so that might be a start.

Does he mean the Blacks? Such a nice family.

Didn’t Rick Santorum say he had several gay friends?

How pathetic is this?
This is what insecure and friendless school kids do.
“I have LOTS of friends you don’t even know about!”
Even 14-year-olds learn the schoolyard rule: Don’t bother trying to brag about things that can’t be proven.* Not only will people not believe you, they’ll laugh at you for your clumsy attempt to puff yourself up.
*Even if something IS true, if you have no proof and can’t name names, too bad. You’ll still look like a pathetic liar, so don’t.

@Julia Grey:
My first reaction to “secret black friends” was that it was the political version of the 14-year-old’s “Canadian girlfriend” – guess I wasn’t the only one that recognized that…..
