Early this morning, while making my rounds, I came across this:
I think the Ryan choice was a bold one but not a wise one as Cokie Roberts said,
I may have to work that into my troll repertoire, something stupid and inane followed by “as Cokie Roberts said”.
Warren Terra
I think Cokie’s assessment is neither bold nor wise.
Anya
Did you hear about Romney going full birther at a rally in Michigan?
Paul
It reminds me of when Cokie Roberts criticized Obama for taking his vacation in Hawaii because Hawaii was not American enough.
She is so out of touch…
Keith
Wisdom from someone who goes by “Cokie”?
Alex S.
Boldness without wisdom is very close to recklessness.
pragmatism
it’s out there……….

Darling Cokie has been mailing it in since the Reagan years. I figure she makes her main points by using word dice.

Roberts is living proof that, like the European royalty of a bygone day, if a relatively small pool interbreeds for long enough the result is idiocy.

This has been another edition of What Cokie Said.

@Anya: The dog whistles have been air raid sirens for some time, but now the wingnuts are turning them up to 11…I’m waiting for a NI-CLANG moment during a speech at the Rethug convention, since they seem to be uniquely unaware of things like audio recorders and video tape….
beltane
See, even Cokie doesn’t find Ryan physically attractive in the way the male pundits do.
Haydnseek
@Maude: I’m sure she has an agency that gets her lecture gigs. Can they be referred to as Cokie whores?
Anya
@Haydnseek:
Well Mitt never objected and shown any discomfort to his church’s doctrine on blackness. Look around him; did he ever associate with anyone of color? I doubt it.
Also, too, I see that the thread below is about the Mitt the Birther.
Yutsano
@Haydnseek: Hell at this point I shall be highly disappointed if they don’t do a blackface skit. Then we’ll drown in the howls of, “CAN’T YOU TAKE A JOKE??”
Maude
@Haydnseek:
She does the NPR broadcasts from home. Maybe she can give living room lectures.
Comrade Jake
The thing with Cokie is that you don’t even get the sound and fury part. It’s always just a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing.
beltane
@Maude: She does them from home? Now that you mention it, I can kind of picture her sitting in her bathrobe with a toy poodle on her lap, drinking a glass of sherry as she spouts off random inanities to her radio audience. This is also the way Peggy Noonan writes her columns though I think she drinks something stronger and less ladylike than sherry.
Turgidson
Jesus, can these twits ever talk about Ryan without slipping the words “bold” or “brave” in there? I hope there aren’t any liberals out there turning it into a drinking game, because they’re all dead from alcohol poisoning by now.
I’m so proud to live in a place where a guy from an upper-middle class background who’s never had to worry about going broke but thinks he has the moral authority to tell the poor they’re immoral and need to go starve under a bridge, has the intellectual maturity of a 14-year old (as can be presumed about any adult who still thinks Ayn Rand had anything useful to say), thinks he’s more qualified to dictate women’s health and privacy than women, and is a lying hypocritical sack of rhino guano, is routinely commended as bold, brave, and serious – and picking this guy to be a heartbeat from the fucking presidency is same.
Where are you, meteor? Hurry up already.

@Yutsano:
The blackface routine won’t take place at the convention for the TV cameras and the lower orders. It’ll take place at the real convention. The money convention:
Someone really needs to incentivize a bus boy or server at one of these conventions to help the rest of us see what went on.

@Yutsano:
Now wait a second. This is the 21st century and I’m positive that the Republicans will stoop no lower than to show clips of Stepin Fetchit between speakers.
Arrik
I love Cokie’s writing because she’s one of the few bipartisan centrists who realize that both sides do it, where “it” is pretty much any bad thing. She’s like David Broder with ovaries.
Did anyone see the brief but brilliant “Ad Nags” fake blog about 6 or 7 years ago? There was some great Cokie/Fareed material.

Okay, WTF. I’m in moderation. I’ll try again, without the link. Maybe that’s it.

It’s been so long since I watched the Sabbath Gasbags that I wasn’t even sure if she was still in there smugly dispensing warmed over broderism. I always thought she was the gold standard in pundit seen-it-all-and-I’m-so-above-it self-satisfaction, but beltway celebutante Luke Russert is giving her a run for her money. At least Cokie has been around a while.

Did anyone see the fake “Ad Nags” blog back in 2004-5? There was some truly epic Cokie material on that…
Comrade Jake
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
That’s her to a T all right. She’s incredibly aggravating on NPR. It’s almost as though she’s annoyed that someone’s actually asking her opinion.

@DougJ:
Actually, the assessment: ” the Ryan choice was a bold one but not a wise one” is of itself dead spot on, and not at all inane. It’s the citation to Coke Roberts to purportedly bolster the soundness of the observation that’s completely inane.
Using Texas Hold’em Poker as a metaphor, Romney’s choice of Ryan is an “ALL IN” sort of bet with two community cards left to flip and only a pair of 2’s in-hand so far.

Ahhh, Cokie Roberts.
I’ll never forget the day a three-judge panel engineered by Justice Rehnquist fired Robert Fisk as the independent counsel investigating Whitewater–for no legitimate reason that anyone has ever been able to explain–and hired Ken Starr in his place.
I was driving in my car and heard it announced on NPR. I started shouting obscenities and slapping the steering wheel in fury, because I knew the fix was in.
Then I heard Robert Segal ask Cokie Roberts if she thought this would have any impact on the fariness of the Whitewater investigation.
“No, no,” she tutted reproachfully. “Of course not. Judge Starr is beyond reproach, and all expectations are that he will conduct a fair and thorough investigation.”
I laughed bitterly. I’ve hated her ever since.
Maude
@beltane:
They used to tell the audience that years ago. She used to mention it. She’s too lazy to go into the studio.
Doesn’t Rush do his show from home?
He blamed Obama for the NYC shooting. His ratings must be falling, he trying to get attention.

@Comrade Jake: Without purveyors of conventional wisdom, how would one know what the conventional wisdom is? She provides a service.

I agree with her assessment, and I’m not sure what there is about it to make fun of.
It seems like a bolder pick than Portman, since Ryan has been elevated to the national level as a tea party policy guy.
It’s not especially wise, since Ryan has been elevated to the national level as a tea party policy guy.
If it works it will work because Romney seems to be trying to turn weakness of the Ryan budget, that the President was using to beat Romney over the head with anyway, into an asset.
When it fails it threatens to open the rift in the Republican party wide open when Romney loses.
Bold, not wise.

As I used to say: Cokie Roberts on Morning Edition is the reason that snooze buttons were added to clock radios.
I don’t even bother with Morning Edition any more.

Cokie Roberts said that smoking is good for your respiration.
Cokie Roberts said that you don’t need to worry about putting your Social Security in the stock market.
Cokie Roberts said that eating paint chips makes you smarter.
This is a fun game. She really is that fucking stupid, too.
