NFL Open Thread by Betty Cracker| December 1, 201312:54 pm| 54 CommentsThis post is in: Open Threads, SportsFacebookTweetEmail My picks above, which are 35% intuition, 15% wishful thinking and 50% wild guesses.
You seem to be missing an “above.”
ETA: And now it magically appears.
I’ve got Dolphins-Jets and Cardinals-Eagles on TV here in NoVa. Will save my flickering attention span for Broncos-Chiefs at 4:30.
You left out: “careful deductive reasoning based on shaky assumptions”
@Steeplejack: Do not adjust your browser: Had to take it down for a quick edit. ;-)
I won’t even watch another Texans game this year. The team is just too awful, and I am definitely a fair-weather Houston fan (an artifact of the Oilers days). Plus I don’t want to ruin my Iron Bowl high.
Bob In Portland
As a Niner fan in Athens, GA, I can only hope that they give numerous updates for the West Coast games. Watching Stanford grind down Notre Dame was fun last night.

it appears you have picked the broncos and giants to beat each other. clever hedge.
‘Aints win in Seattle? Dont bet on it.
And it’s the texans game today. The only thing they do well anymore is run, but w/the Pats disasterous run D, that will be enough.
Yup, ain’t happening. Also, too, won’t predict, but want the Lambs and Chefs to win. Because. The rest of the lot get a meh.
That puts you ahead of most people, whose
guessespicks are about 75% wishful thinking and 25% wild guesses.
Browns over Jaguars. Check.
Vikings over Bears? Nah.
I’ll go with the Titans over the Colts. The Colts seems to have thrown a shoe.
Cards over Eagles. Check.
49ers over Rams. Likely.
Broncos over Chiefs? Ugh, I think you might be right, hope you aren’t.
Bucs over Panthers? Hell if I know. I keep forgetting Tampa Bay has a football team.
Pats over Texans. Uh, yeah.
Jets over Dolphins? Going for the upset: the manic-depressive Jets pull one out.
Bills over Falcons. That’s in Toronto, isn’t it? Hrmm. Going with the Bills in a squeaker.
Chargers over Bengals? Other way around, I expect.
Giants over Redskins? Seems like Shanahan’s tenure is in a death spiral over there, so yeah. I’m hoping the Redskins pull it out, though, because Giants.
Saints over Seahawks. Totally unsure.
[‘I’m not actually going to watch any of this.’]
@Crusty Dem: I hope I’m wrong on that because I despise the Patriots.
I would have picked the Bengals.
That graphic sucks. The match-ups aren’t horizontal. The Broncos are playing the Chiefs. The Giants are playing the Redskins.
@Betty Cracker: Can go with the Texans, but only because JJ Watt is adorable.
Also: Seahacks will pull it out at the last minute, but only because the Clink is loud. Like unbelievably loud.
The Bears and Vikings are trying to bore each other to death.
Redzone just went Derp City there for a minute. Turnover-turnover-turnover.
I will cheer for the Seahawks because all things being equal, I cheer for the team geographically closest to me.
Poor NBC. Back when the schedule was devised I’m sure it thought NYG – Washington was a marquee matchup this late in the season.
@Linkmeister: The two weakest teams in the NFC East. I suppose either one could lose.
@Yatsuno: Saints are used to loud, Superdome is very loud too. I’m more worried about temperature. Hope they can pull it off.

Picking the Vikings to beat the Bears definitely falls into the “wild guess” category.
As for the Saints defeating the Seahawks in Seattle, that goes into the “wild and crazy wishful thinking, of the same degree as speculation about a ‘President Palin'” category, for sure.
@Nethead Jay: Saints aren’t used to loud when they have the ball though. And it’s supposed to snow in Seattle tomorrow night. Seahacks have been practicing outdoors, hope the Saints can work on something similar. It should be an interesting game regardless.
They’re trying for the noise record tomorrow as well. It’ll be wild.
The game of the week is going to be the Broncos and the Chargers. As much as I would like the Falcons to win, I’ll be realistic and watch the Broncos instead.

Is this the game with the long stick, or the one with the baskets? Or the one on broomsticks?
Ample reason to be cautious when putting Christmas lights on palm trees (caution, possibly NSFW).
Tampa Bay over the Panthers?!? Seriously? But I guess if the Texans can hang with the Pats, then anything is possible (although Carolina is owning the Bucs late in the 4th)
@Tara the Antisocial Social Worker:
Are you thinking of real Quidditch, or Muggle Quidditch?
now i know what to do with the palms out front….
We’ll see, just saying I don’t think that’ll be the deciding factor. Yeah, looked at the weather forecast and I don’t like it, but you bet they’ve been practicing for that, it was one of the significant factors a few years ago in the playoffs and Sean Payton remembers that. The one thing that could counterbalance that is that Seahawks defense seems a little weakened and you know that’s catnip to Saints offense. Anyway, as you say, it should be an interesting game no matter what.
@burnspbesq: Hahahaha, that’s great,
Good thing the lights on the palm fronds are green and not white.
My alma mater’s ice-hockey rink has a curling sheet in the basement. There were persistent rumors of a naked co-ed intramural curling league.
I don’t think the noise will be much more of a factor than it ever is. But the Saints, you know I love ’em, but they regularly tank in cold weather. A Saints fan’s worst nightmare is a clutch game in an open-air stadium up north in the winter. Hell, I watched the Jets smack us around just a month ago.
@MattF: A 0 – 0 tie would be interesting.
Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, I tuck my palm in.
@burnspbesq: Do you think it was intentional? haha
The zebras just fucking ROBBED Minnesota.
@Nethead Jay: Saints I think are very good after long rest.
OTOH, I still think Seahawks are better. Niners were much better against Saints than first game against Seahawks – the Seahawks crushed them. So I vote Seahawks. Saints could not tackle last time in Seattle.
@Keith P: That was my most wishful thinking pick — Tampa’s my team, even though they suck.
@MikeJ: I quietly hope the hometown team loses. Fans of winning teams are obnoxious.

Muggle Quiddich SUCKS. For one thing, you’ve got Kardashians pretending to be witches and wizards. FAIL.
Well, the Vikings beat the Bears.
@Villago Delenda Est: Yeah, Vikings over Bears. Crazy talk, amirite? :-)
Jints over skins. Long time Giants fan and ex season ticket holder. Can not watch anymore.
Watched the Ravens-Steelers Thursday and it was not the crazy rules and resets on that last drive,or Timlin acting like a child but the 3 left tackles and knocked out back losing his helmet.
It was farce except for real people being seriously injured.
Well Atlanta is tied with Buffalo with twenty seconds left. hmmm. Maybe we will win one.
@JPL: This is exciting. I’ve either picked a wonderful week or a terrible week to start getting interested in football!
I cheer for the Seahawks because I have lived in this area from the 1940s through the 1980s; and retired here. With the exception of the Seattle Supersonics NBA team, we had no big time pro sports. Thus, we normally picked teams from other areas to cheer for. My choice was usually the opposite of my older brother; e.g., he was a Brooklyn Dodger (soon to become Los Angeles Dodger) fan; I was a New York Yankee fan. He was a Bart Starr and Packer fan; I was a Unitas and Colt fan. Thus, when we finally got an NFL team, it was truly exciting. I cheered for them through all the lean years (something Detroit fans can understand). Now, that we have a really good team, it is truly exciting and enjoyable to find out what winning is all about. Of course, we don’t have the Supersonics any more (boo on OKC) and the Mariners only had a brief stint as winners. But, I also remember when New Orleans Saints fans found their team so embarrassing that they wore bags over their heads and referred to the team as the “Ain’ts”. So, I am happy for New Orleans, too; but, I hope we clobber the Saints on Monday night . . . or win by a whisker.
@SiubhanDuinne: You might be the lucky charm that Atlanta needed this season.
@JPL: Could be. Too bad I showed up too late in the season to matter. But that’s two nights in a row I’ve watched really exciting OT finishes! I could learn to enjoy this football.
Villago Delenda Est
Well, who would have thunk it going in? You, for one. Me, not so much! :D
Always glad to see the Racial Slurs lose a game.
Paul in KY
@Bonnie: Expect a big Seahawk win myself.
