Open Thread: Dumbest Man in Congress Wants to “Duel” (But Only with a Microphone)

Yeah, I bet he didn’t know the meaning of ‘xenophobia’, being as it has all those wacky letters — imagine the unfortunate aide who had to help him spell it out. This is the dumb Rep. (Steve “calves the size of cantaloupes”) King, out of Iowa, as opposed to the mean Rep. (Peter) King from Long Island (who knows better than to cross Senator Schumer, especially if it means getting between Schumer and the nearest microphone).

If Schumer doesn’t counter with some variant on “never getting into a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent”… well, then I don’t know Chuck Schumer.

    I’m embarrassed that Steve King is from my state.

    On a lighter note, I just got back from WisCon where the most fun panel I went to was a spirited discussion of whether “Sherlock” or “Elementary” is the better show.

    @Poopyman: Quote from Eric Holder, who does not respect Rep. Gohmert’s authori-TAY!

    … It was a reference to a comment that Gohmert made at a House Judiciary Committee hearing last year where Gohmert said the Justice Department had failed to stop the Boston Marathon bombing. When Holder pushed back, Gohmert became annoyed and said, “The attorney general will not cast aspersions on my asparagus.”

    It remains unclear whether Gohmert intended to say asparagus or if he meant something else.

    @Poopyman: When the dumbest rep in Congress, Louie Gohmert was pissed at AG Holder in a hearing last year, he told the AH that “the AG will not cast aspersions on my asparagus.” When they had another test exchange this year, Holder was visibly pissed and wished Mr. Gohmert a good crop.

    Sorry, AL, but the Iowa Rep King is but a bridesmaid of dumb in Congress. Peter King of NY, is indeed the mean one, as well as much too smart to get between Schumer and a microphone for any reason.

I haven’t watched much of Elementary but they seem to be to very different takes on the Holmes mythology. Plus Sherlock is basically two or three mini-movies a year as opposed to a 20 + episode season. Whatever the case, that kind of debate is bottomless. I’m surprised you made it home.

    That’s certainly what I like about it. There’s enough of the original work there to recognize the stories, but they’re given a thoroughly modern twist, sometimes to the point that they’re barely recognizable. It’s a lot of fun to see how the writers find modern equivalents to the situations and technologies in the original.

Australia is debating a budget Paul Ryan could have written as we speak. And Canada elected a government whose energy policy is trying to shove Keystone XL into this country while Ontario is at least even money to elect its own tea party government next month despite the cautionary examples immediately to the south.

    I think the white privilege issue is international. In a world that’s decentralizing away from Europe and its former settler colonies there’s nowhere to hide from it. And in the long run, the large non-white population will probably help North America weather this storm the best.

    @Iowa Old Lady:

    My posts aren’t posting. Am in the time out box?

    No, I think you may have just added those spaces to your ‘nym — even such a minor change would convince FYWP that you were a new, untested, possibly spam-botting commentor.

    Even commenting from a different device is enough to make FYWP suspicious!

    To the video at the top: Rep. Steve King is a colossal dumb-ass. He still doesn’t understand the meaning of xenophobia even after his trip to the dictionary. He says it is “being afraid of something that you don’t know,” then proceeds to ignore even that definition as he lists the people he is not afraid of even though they “are not like me.”

    It’s true that one of the definitions of xenophobia is the fear of “anything that is strange or foreign,” but the primary definition—especially in the context of a debate on immigration reform—is the fear of foreigners. What a maroon.

    @lamh36: @lamh36: when I work overnight shifts, which is all the time, i have to do actual work. So getting to sit around watching videos of my choice sounds like a pretty
    sweet deal.

    @Anne Laurie: pretty sure it’s Gohmert for “peen”.

    I will be finishing enjoying? Blood Lake. And then I will indulge in some poetry reading in bed and nice sleep. Tomorrow is the fine relaxation of a full workout and then I get to relax by working on work some more.

    @Gretchen: I work in a lab, particularly a hospital microbiology laboratory. There is literally nothing for me to do until someone sends down a specimen or calls with a question. So if not for other things, I’d literally be sitting here watching the clock and as you can imagine, that could drive you stir crazy

    I had an early dinner with a friend, then went to Trader Joe’s to get the instant coffee that I forgot to get when I was at the other Trader Joe’s on Friday. It was mercifully not packed, although the parking lot was still a madhouse, for some reason. Then I went to Target to get a couple of things, and, because I hadn’t been there in quite a while and it was also mercifully not packed, I ended up looking at every single item in the store (except women’s underwear—restraining order), which is an OCD thing that happens to me sometimes, usually in Home Depot. I ended up getting a few pieces of minor kitchenware and a couple of my signature polos from the Targét pour Homme collection. Stylin’.

    Came home and spent a quiet evening with the housecat. Looking forward to a cup of that tasty Trader Joe’s instant coffee in the morning—with heavy cream! Good times.

    It’s part of the Trader Joe’s experience. It just wouldn’t be a trip to TJs if it didn’t involve spending more time looking for a parking place than shopping.

    @Hungry Joe:

    Exactly what I was thinking. Steve King’s stupid. But stupider than Louie Gohmert? Come on now!

    @Roger Moore:

    Agreed. They would have to invent a new IQ scale (imaginary numbers?) to quantify Gohmert’s IQ.

    On the other hand, to appreciate Modern Republicans one needs a corresponding evilness or perversity quotient to measure just what lousy human beings they are. It’s not enough to be merely stupid and ignorant, you have to be a genuinely terrible human being to be in the front rank of the Modern Republican Party. Both King and Gohmert qualify easily.

    Well, if you’re going to be all traditional, then I’d think this Sherlock pales in comparison to Jeremy Brett’s…

    I love Elementary, and Lucy Liu has nothing to do with it. Johnny Lee Miller is the whole show and his non-stop intensity seems to match the original vision of Sherlock.

    Don’t you all get that?

    So the next person to mention they are “tired” of Hillary gets punched in the crotch, seriously.

    Ruthless determination to win is what we need, solidarity as Democrats is what we need. Beating these assholes once and for all is what we need.

    Surely everyone knows that the word “xenophobia” means someone who hates the TV show Xena: Warrior Princess.

    lamh36: I’m just jealous. They keep us chronically understaffed and then complain that things don’t get done fast enough – the MBA jerk in charge has an excel chart that says we don’t need overtime. But I admit the time goes faster when I’m running.
