When is Betty going to post up GG’s latest piece? I’ve got popcorn ready. There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth over at GOS. Not as interesting as the dust ups here though, because they all pretty much take the same side. Lot’s of “atta boys” and “I give up on humanity” with a healthy sprinkling of “Obama =Bush” on top of a little red “I’ll never vote again.”

I am sitting in the auditorium at Camelback High School, waiting for the AZ gubernatorial debate to begin. Mr. Suzanne and I am excited to be in the audience, and we submitted questions that I hope will be asked. The R candidate is the former CEO of Cold Stone Creamery, and is a raging, RAGING teabagging asshole. The D is a former member of the Board of Regents. The debate is focusing on education, so hopefully we are on friendly territory.

Ok, I’ll prolly start a fight here….but I see that Gone With The Wind is playing tomorrow on TCM.
I was a precocious reader, and I think I read GWTW at least 10 times before I was 20. For me, it was a love story; I couldn’t figure out why Scarlett didn’t know she loved Rhett and not that wimpy Ashley.
My husband used to laugh at me when i would cry at the end of Gone With The Wind – he’d say “you think it will turn out different this time?”
But I always did. I wanted Scarlett to love Rhett.
Ok, Flame away!

@Southern Beale:
I think you answered your own question.
They do this because they can pay crap wages and feel the sale will be easy, to people who won’t question anything about the business. When you decide to open/purchase a business there are many questions to ask. I never asked can I pay crap wages and screw my customers but others may have those foremost in mind.

I had an exhausting Saturday so I have been sitting around with my feet up today playing IPad solitaire. I had to stop to charge the thing up, I am already beginning to feel withdrawal symptoms. Mark my words, one day a skeleton will be found sprawled in a reclining chair with an IPad In its bony fingers. But it will not be my skeleton, and it will not be this day–if only because I must knock off and get to bed early to prepare for the exhausting ordeal of getting to work tomorrow. The PTB installed a wonderful new security system that, at best, half works; I wouldn’t be surprised if they bought it at the Beavercreek Walmart. Massive delays in gaining admission to our inner sanctum are expected tomorrow, up to 2 hours. Pray for us. Christians, tomorrow is Michaelmas and we will probably need all the help we can get. Everybody else, pray your usual prayer for the SNAFU’d. Maybe you atheists can invoke the mighty powers of P.D. What’s His Name, or just think supportive thoughts.

Brewed today. Was originally going to make a Baltic Porter since normal weather should be in the 50’s, but the 80 degrees today meant a change of plans (Baltic Porter traditionally uses a lager yeast and needs cooler fermentation temps…) So I’ll end up with a 8% ABV Robust Porter instead… Not complaining about the weather, or the beer results, or the Vikings Victory, or the Gophers Victory, or anything… It was a very nice weekend all the way around…

Every film major has a wildly popular film they’ve never seen, and mine is GWTW. Even though I love to read romance novels, it just never appealed to me, probably because Clark Gable never really appealed to me (what can I say, I would take Basil Rathbone way before Gable).

@dance around in your bones: I just went to see GWTW today on the big screen, it is playing for two days around the country so I decided why not. Packed theatre no less, and just extraordinary to see it in correct aspect ratio. It holds up remarkably well, though the racial component really is odd to watch from a 21st century perspective- no question. But in the final analysis I really couldn’t take my eyes off Vivien Leigh. She was an actress for the ages. Gable was no slouch either. The thing moved, and the pacing / editing especially in the first half was quite remarkable. I was entertained.!

@Richard Fox: The movie came out before I was born, but I saw it on the big screen (what did they call it? Cinerama?) after reading the book numerous times.
It’s a great movie, if you can put aside the tenor of the times. I mean, history is what it is – we can’t put our ‘modern’ values on it. And history – of any country – often sucks balls. Especially for the indigenous people. And so it goes, and so it goes.
Anne Laurie
@dance around in your bones: I read GWTW when I was in middle school, and I could not understand why Scarlett didn’t dump both those luzers and just set up her own business with Prissy! I knew, intellectually, why ‘everybody’ loved the romance, but I was just starting to read Jane Austen, and I liked Austen’s take much better…
That was when I read The Clansman, too — a yellowed copy from the 1920s I found in my grandparents’ summer cottage basement, IIRC. I may be the last person to read it outside of an academic requirement. My liberal English-teacher mother was scandalized, but I told her it wasn’t written well enough to persuade anyone with an IQ high enough to finish it.
PurpleGirl
WRT Gone With the Wind: I’ve read the book only once, don’t think I could re-read it. I’ve seen the movie twice on the big screen; once as a child when my sister took me and the second time at a release somewhere in the 1970s (I think) with a movie buff friend. My sister had a major crush on Clark Gable, which I could kinda see but he was never my cup of tea. (I preferred him in Run Silent Run Deep.)
ETA: You lose a lot if watching it on TV, it really does require a LARGE screen. And the music is very memorable, sweeping movements perfectly fitting the scenery and landscapes.
Anne Laurie
@lamh36: Some reviewer — at Vulture, IIRC — called it “action Denzel porn”. I’ll watch anything with Mr. Washington in it, but since the Spousal Unit doesn’t care for lovingly filmed violence-for-its-own-sake, his Equalizer I’ll probably wait to watch on Netflix.

@Anne Laurie:
Most of the books that I read in my childhood came from my parental units’ college bookshelves. I was not forbidden to read anything – I read all of Salinger and Fitzgerald and Hemingway and etc before I was ten years old. Also Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (basically for the romance parts!!!!) I love Russian literature. I read War and Peace about 6 times (the last few times skipping the War parts) and also D.H.Lawrence and ….well, I could go on, but I won’t.
I’m a reader, still. I think I have about 600 books on my Kindle.
mai naem
@Anne Laurie: It didn’t used to be like that. I used to go the the original Cold Stone in Tempe. It’s moved within the strip center but still there. I even got, I believe, the very first ice cream cake they ever made, for my parents anniversary party. The cofounder wasn’t all that confident about her cake decorating skills and really didn’t do a great job with the decorating, but it tasted good. I used to take all our out of town visitors to Cold Stone. I think when they got bought out by Doug Douchebag’s company, they changed their ice cream. Haven’t been there in several years. The last couple of times I went, the Sweet Cream flavor I had always ordered tasted super sweet(not usual) and the texture was icky. Anyhow, the daughter of the original owners(also LDS RWNJs who gave $10k to anti-gay marriage props) was convicted of DUI and manslaughter and got away with a 3 yr sentence.
PurpleGirl
@lamh36: I want to see the movie. I was a big fan of the Edward Woodward TV series. I also really liked the secondary characters. But I haven’t seen it yet.

@NotMax: Tastes differ. It came out on video at a time when I was stationed for about a year in little backwater in Germany. There were few intellectual outlets around – Bamberg had been different (both the town and the people in my battalion) – and the movie was something that connected me to the concept of good conversation. Also, I like the Nick Smith character.

@Suzanne: One of these days. So what was the debate like? To me it sounded like Douchey did a better job. I hope I’m wrong. Fred wasn’t facing the right camera most of the time. Douchey seemed to be better prepped as far as pulling the “I know Joe Johnson, the principal at ABC school…” And the hecklers didn’t help. Also too, Troy Hayden was as much of a douchebag as Douchey himself. I hope Fred learns from this debate.
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Gin & Tonic: I don’t like the whole “mix-in” concept. The one time I went into a Cold Stone Creamery, i went in just wanting an ice cream cone. You know, ice cream and a cone. Anyway Omnes, for various reasons, today has been an Jim Carroll day. We used to live on an old farm, and we would put the (huge) stereo speakers facing out to the ocean and crank the tunes big volume.

@mai naem: Both Mr. Suzanne and I thought Douchey came off looking very polished, but he said a couple of things that were embarrassing and the audience laughed at him. The dude said something like “thought leaders, such as George Will and Louis C.K.”. The audience totally thought that was ridiculous, and Ducey came off badly in that exchange. And we didn’t like how Ducey kept trying to name-drop in lieu of having actual insights. We both thought that DuVal should have talked more about his experience as a Regent. We also both thought that DuVal was trying to come off elder statesman-like and didn’t try too hard to attack Ducey or to punch holes in his argument. However, DuVal did open up with how Ducey didn’t want to sent the $300 or so million back to the schools, and how he didn’t really explain why. The protestors were obnoxious as hell. One was sitting right behind us, and they were loud and I thought made Ducey look more sympathetic. As much as I hate Russell Pearce and I support their cause, they didn’t help themselves.
Afterward, both candidates had tables with signs available, and DuVal’s signs got taken very quickly.
