Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

No one could have predicted…

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Bark louder, little dog.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

well, here we are. horribly enough, this article exists. http://t.co/7Zr9bws4VG

— Rosie Gray (@RosieGray) December 2, 2014

… as committed at Tucker Carlson’s Vanity Project:

… The WaPo reporter appears to be part black and feels most comfortable with people who have dark skin. His mother and grandmother, however, are white. A brief perusal of his mother’s Facebook page shows that Wesley looks nothing like his caucasian mother and more closely resembles his dark-skinned father…

Also, if you believe Charles C. “No, the other Charles” Johnson, Lowrey was once ticketed for speeding and the officer guessed his race as “White, Caucasian, Asiatic Indian, and Arab.” Who are ya gonna believe, a DFH reporter or an anonymous LEO?

Charles C. Johnson looks like he could be Pudge Carlson’s not/smarter younger brother. Luke Russert could be the missing link between them. I wonder if CCJ is also a dopey trust fund baby who thinks he made on merit.

I wonder who, if anyone, actually reads the Daily Caller. Having been fired by every cable network at least once, Tucker is now a B-list substitute for the Fox Morning Zoo Croo, no? Can’t imagine he has a lot of appeal for Scoot-a-round Wheezers who think that Hasselbeck girl is just a peach! I would think his smug, aging prepster persona would remind them of the boss’s kid they hated when they had to clean up after him all through his summer job.

GOP readies Obama immigration response: No shutdown, but a nod to conservatives

Late Tuesday, Rep. Paul C. Broun (R-Ga.) called for Boehner to not invite Obama to deliver the State of the Union address next year. Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) suggested that the budgets for White House operations, including for Air Force One, should be decreased. Other conservatives have mentioned censuring the president, impeaching him or suing the administration over its immigration actions.

“I’d rather defund Air Force One,” Huelskamp said. “Congress took a 19 percent cut on its budgets — we should do the same for the White House.” On the State of the Union, he added: “In the spirit of George Washington, he could send it to us in writing. It’d save some time.”

Filmed in Wilmington, NC but it will probably have to move due to the asshole GOP legislature which decided to drastically cut funding for film incentives in this increasingly backward state. Kickbacks would have made a difference, I’d guess.

Also, pointless, except to die hard bigots who, I dunno, think it is a good use of their time to wonder and worry if a ‘dark skinned’ or swarthy person of any race might have a ‘shadow in their past’ or is maybe not really truly ‘white’ because A-rab or Sikh or some such.

my coworkers and I were talking about Sleepy Hollow this morning.

the consensus is, nobody likes Katrina. the shows ratings have been going down and a lot of people are attributing it to having too much focus on the Crane family dynamic and way too much Katrina on screen time. also too, we see less of the central foursome that made last season so great.

Abby is no ones side kick and yet this season so far they’ve been seemingly making her too much of a side note in place of the crappy acting and storyline involving Katrina. also too there is like NO chemistry between Ichabod and Katrina.

@NotMax: FOX preparing flashing red graphic “Obama Busted at White House!” as we speak.

    Dig this. Kathleen Parker:

As the curtain closes on the latest episode of “Ferguson,” the media series, it is fair to wonder whether events might not have spiraled out of control to the extent they did had the media settled on another topic. […]
I’m not the first to wonder or comment on the media’s role in contributing to events, but some further clarifications seem warranted in this case. First, as always bears repeating, The Media are neither the same animal nor equal. Think Tom Brokaw and Al Sharpton. Or, TMZ and “60 Minutes.”[…]
It’s a compelling story, to be sure. But the intensity of interest was in no small part driven by certain media outlets and “journalists,” such as the agenda-driven Rev. Al, who talked of little else in the months since the August shooting. This relentless coverage, combined with the repeated use of photos showing a much-younger Brown, surely contributed to public contempt toward media. […]
The media may not have caused events to spiral out of control in Ferguson and, to be fair, Sharpton may well have a legitimate role in shining a light on racial injustice. But when activists posing as journalists have television shows through which they stoke passions — and when certain media decide to magnify issues not in the name of justice but, let’s face it, for ratings — then journalism has a problem. And that means America has a problem.

That’s right, Rev. Al killed Darren Wilson, in Ferguson, with the microphone!

Sean Hannity (& etc), as a good journalist, just innocently pointed that out.

He had on show for 7pm that was sold out already, so they added a 10pm show. I’m just gonna have to schedule a late day at work on that day! Let’s hope he doesn’t cancel that show.

@max: But the intensity of interest was in no small part driven by certain media outlets and “journalists,” such as the agenda-driven Rev. Al, who talked of little else in the months since the August shooting.

To be fair, Kathleen Parker was absolutely scathing on Hannity’s coverage of the “border crisis” last summer, like when he rode around on the Rio Grande in a gun boat with Rick Perry. I didn’t read that column, I’m not even sure it exists, but I’m sure it’s out there, somewhere, because KP is one of your thoughtful conservatives. No cheap demagoguery from her.

(Not saying that situation wasn’t crisis, just not the one in Sean’s paranoid, “Mommy, there’s a monster in my closet!” fever dreams. Scroll down to see Sean with his cap turned backwards, to show he’s a dude, bro.)

If you gots the twitter machine, Lisa Bloom is calling out Joe Scar for his punk ass rant about Mike Brown on MOnday.

Of course Joe won’t have Lisa on his show, cause he like his women like his co-host, mainly quiet and simpering like Mika. You challenge him and/or make him look silly on his show and you will never been seen with him again.

Anyone else notice Scarborough NEVER works with Maddow anymore? Even when there is election coverage, if Tweety is doing a special Hardball, then Killer Joe will be on it, but Maddow anchoring and Joe is a no-show!

I said on twitter thatn Killer Joe is MSNBC’s version of KKKlanity and he surrounds himself with MSNBC versions of Alan Colmes.

    @NotMax:

I’ve seen the first two or three seasons of LMOTP. When it was in first run, I tried hard to bring the show’s creator, Zarqa Nawaz, to Atlanta — we had thoughts of doing an academic-cultural event that would have included several prominent Canadian Muslim women as panelists. Alas, the project eventually came to naught, but I did enjoy the series. One of these days I’ll get hold of the seasons I missed and treat myself to a nice long filmic Saskatchewanathon (naturally, Corner Gas is in there too!)

I was reading a review article by a famous population geneticist, Cavalli-Sforza, on the genetic history of the human races. The articles is almost ten years old, so not sure how many conclusions have held up over time. (edit: this was a few months ago, so not sure I can find the reference now).

Anyway, after making the point, several times, that if you run human genetic data through standard algorithms for detecting subspecies and races (as like, for animals) humans invariably come out ONE subspecies, ONE ‘variety’, ONE race.. Unlike bugs and deer, and buffalo and skunks, and such like.

Then Cavalli-Sforza made the point that, by other measures, there is much less genetic diversity among different races of humans than other animals that we consider one or several very closely related species. I find that hard to believe, since different kinds of people look a lot different to me than, say, different kinds of goats. But I will venture to guess that Cavalli-Sforza knows that science behind that statement a lot better than I do, so I will go along with him.

Then he discussed several hypotheses about the origins of what we humans deem to be different human races, and gave favorable judgments on the idea that the ‘white’ race may be the most truly mongrel of all, with evidence that the current whiteys are a mongrelized mixed of an ancient East Asian population mixed with more a recent group coming straight out of Africa. (edit: maybe with a tad of Neanderthal mixed in).

But of course it is more complicated than that, because the East Asians themselves may be mix of an archaic group with currently deemed ‘white’ characteristics that at one time way long ago headed straight into East Asia.

But, if people here want to make the heathens rage, they can trot out the ‘current so-called whites are the true mongrels’ hypothesis. See how that goes over.

Anyway, all this obsession with so-called races is total scientific nonsense. Tucker and Sullivan and other innumerate pundits can obsess over it all they want, it won’t change the truth.

@Petorado: I think Jefferson once did some kind of BS pseudo-scientific analysis of how much you had to dilute the ‘shadow in the past’ to purge the blood…. and one came out as white as the driven snow. Should send that to Tucker and Sullivan, and tell them to not get too carried away with the octoroon-i-snooping into the colleagues (though calling the person Tucker’s bunch investigated a colleague of Tucker may be an insult, in which case I apologize.)

Looking the pic of the investigated journalist again, he looks a little like Aasif Mandvi, IMHO. Any connection there would be interesting unlike Tuckers mish mash of nonsense. Where was THAT guy when Mandvi tried to make Gov. Scott pee in the cup? Enquiring minds want to know, dammit.

There’s a whole lot of stupid people out there who assume that any white person who is not blonde-haired and blue eyes is like a can of white paint that’s been tainted with black pigment.

One of G’s cousins is biracial (dad was black, mom was white/Latina). His wife is white, and their first son is … blonde and blue-eyed.

@Mnemosyne: I love that stuff too – I find it sort of fascinating how sometimes you have kids who look like mini versions of one of their parents, and sometimes they barely look related.

Or with siblings, too – I had a friend who looked so much like her brother that even though they were two years apart, people often thought they were twins. But my friend Gen has two boys who you’d never guess were brothers – one has her dark hair and eyes and a little of her Spanish/Chinese heritage in his features, and the younger one is a super white, blond haired blue-eyed tiny copy of his Dad.

@jl: Most of the right wing “public intellectuals” and scientists mal-practicing outside their area of specialty (see James Watson) really don’t know much about evolutionary biology and paleo-anthropology. The essential facts is sometimes between 200,000 to 120,000 years ago the brains of a group of archaic human beings in Africa reached a ability with language that outstripped the others. From this group we are all extended. During the consequent migrations, evolution continued to work (genetic drift, environmental conditions, sexual selection), so we get a wide a variety of humans, with human beings closes to the source of migration (Africa) having the greatest genetic diversity. http://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/are-there-human-races/ and http://www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/2011/09/23/aboriginal-dna-sheds-light-on-early-humans-experts-respond/

(Reading comments and responses, it is always a good idea to remember that the data here is still very thin on this subject, with lots of arguments going back and forth, but African origin homo sapiens sapiens is pretty much a settled scientific fact and that the we are all descendants of very small group over the last 100,000 years, give or take 30,000. The wackos will start shooting and they will respond with “who me?”outrage…and then claim they are the real victims when the rest of us point out that they used their free speech to incite violence and that there are consequences for that.
