People gave you a hard time over The Motels last week Betty. At least you aren’t shoving Nickleback down our throats.
btw – I like the Motels. Well some of their stuff. OK in truth I only used 6 songs out of a Greatest hits double CD in my itunes library.

Was going through all the documents I need for my dual-citizenship when I came across a typo on my parents’ marriage licence from 1967. I filed to amend but I am dreading dealing with the NYC clerk’s office, which still seems to be stuck in the pre-digital era.

@PatDollard HARD TRUTH: It’s time for a temporary right-wing dictatorship to put the country back in order, which cannot be done through congress. #tcot

He is correct that congress is about 90% broken. Wonder if he has any rational idea why? Wonder if he knows that most dictators are overthrown by force? And that none of them have ever attempted to be temporary. I don’t wonder at all if he’s an idiot.
Man, I have long prayed that Pat Dollard wouldn’t declare it time to change our system of government. I guess there’s nothing we can do now. It was a good run.
Went to see The Peculiar Case of the Dog in the Night-Time this weekend. Still sniffling about that. Glad that theaters are dark or I would have had to pretend to get something in my eyes.
@ranchandsyrup: McMegan should have put her money where her mouth is and become a law enforcement officer. Then she could beat, gas, and shoot all the protesters her withered little heart desires.
That’s a hoot. One imagines her washing out of the academy due to an inability to do even one pullup.

Look, there are plenty of reasons not to like the Supreme Court’s decision in Heien v. North Carolina, but for cryin’ out loud, when are people going to learn not to consent to a search of their car when they know they have a bunch of cocaine on them?
@Betty Cracker: Does the lead singer have to wrap his hair in TP to sleep on it without messing it up; it also looks like it was inspired by Elsa Lancaster’s hair in Bride of Frankenstein.

Depends on how you define dictator. Defined one way, it’s just a tautology. You could say the Sandinista revolutionaries were dictators in that they didn’t take power in an election and were the whole of the law. They did, however, call elections. They won the first and lost the next, and left office when they lost.

Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B is producing Americanah. It also produced Selma and 12 Years A Slave.
Um hmm Ridley Scott claiming he couldn’t find funding for a more accurate cast for Exodus…hmm Brad Pitt’s company sure seems to be doing all right…
Jeebus. This is the nutcase that all the bigots I know have been citing as the most credible of witnesses? Seriously? And how fucking stupid are those grand jurors? I mean…come.on. Fuck.

@lamh36: On the other hand, 12 Years a Slave wasn’t really CGI intensive. Since they had to rely on a good script and great acting they made it for only $22 million. Exodus cost $140 million because its selling point is CGI spectacle.

@burnspbesq: I never understood that odd behavior. At a seminar on drug interdiction put on by the highway patrol (3 hrs CLE!) many years ago, I was shocked to learn that 75% of the drug seizures were from consent searches. Even the patrol guys seemed slightly confused when they’d ask to search a vehicle, be told “yes” and then find a key in the trunk.

Commenter Sharl really got me thinking about the working poor. From today’s VP thread about the Wasilla Snowbilly.
I’ve ordered 2 copies of Tirado’s book for holiday gifts.
It breaks my heart that people could make so little money for their work, and not be eligible for affordable healthcare, and be denied dignity.
I signed up for Obamacare today, which was affordable because my projected income for next year allows me a generous federal subsidy. For 2014 I was under the limit; healthcare was unaffordable the first time around and I am a healthy enough person to forgo it. (Although that’s a terrible risk.)

Totally agree on The Water of March. Try Jane Monheit’s version. This song is incredibly difficult to sing for a non-professional – hard to find a moment to breathe.
Jobim is justifiably famous for his Brazilian rhythm.

Re an actual Surgeon General – guess all it takes is the threat of an incredibly contagious disease to get people’s(Republicans’) attention.
Doubly sweet. And today’s events proved him right.
Our homegrown American ran up double the body count of those slacking Australians — 6 dead so far, vs. 2 vics and the shooter in Oz.
But he’s a ginger, and former US military member, and the Australian shooter is an Iranian born brown person who’s a self-described religious figure.
So the Pennsylvania shooter is barely making the “trending news”. PBS is all about Australia tonight.

Love Susannah McCorkle. Her death was very sad.

That’s a nice version, but I’ll go with Marisa Monte + David Byrne one.
I’d be Marisa’s spittoon boy if I could hear that voice every day.

“Waters of March” is a widely covered tune. There’s a great version on Quatuor Ebene’s album “Brazil,” which is one of my favorite records of 2014.

Example: Avatar…no big names but kick ass tech and CGI…did pretty well.
