    Depends on how you define dictator. Defined one way, it’s just a tautology. You could say the Sandinista revolutionaries were dictators in that they didn’t take power in an election and were the whole of the law. They did, however, call elections. They won the first and lost the next, and left office when they lost.

    @lamh36: On the other hand, 12 Years a Slave wasn’t really CGI intensive. Since they had to rely on a good script and great acting they made it for only $22 million. Exodus cost $140 million because its selling point is CGI spectacle.

    @burnspbesq: I never understood that odd behavior. At a seminar on drug interdiction put on by the highway patrol (3 hrs CLE!) many years ago, I was shocked to learn that 75% of the drug seizures were from consent searches. Even the patrol guys seemed slightly confused when they’d ask to search a vehicle, be told “yes” and then find a key in the trunk.

    Sharl: OT, just caught the final minutes of Linda Tirado on Kojo Nnamdi’s local NPR show, discussing her book “Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America“. The link to that show is here (podcast should be up sometime this evening, for anyone interested in listening).

    I’ve ordered 2 copies of Tirado’s book for holiday gifts.

    It breaks my heart that people could make so little money for their work, and not be eligible for affordable healthcare, and be denied dignity.

    I signed up for Obamacare today, which was affordable because my projected income for next year allows me a generous federal subsidy. For 2014 I was under the limit; healthcare was unaffordable the first time around and I am a healthy enough person to forgo it. (Although that’s a terrible risk.)

    Example: Avatar…no big names but kick ass tech and CGI…did pretty well.

    The idea that Ridley Scott doesn’t have the clout to get funding for a film cause of CGI just don’t cut it.

    Example 2: Guillermo Del Toro..Hellboy, no big name, kick ass CGI…
