Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Open Thread: Because She Can

Elizabeth Lauten’s boss, Stephen Fincher, won by a 46-point margin last month.

— daveweigel (@daveweigel) December 1, 2014

If only she’d been a real journalist, she’d have remembered the magical phrase “Some people say… “ As the Washington Post, company paper for a town where the monopoly company is politics, explained the issue:

… “Try showing a little class,” Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Rep. Stephen Lee Fincher (Tenn.), wrote Friday in a Facebook posting addressed to Sasha, 13, and Malia, 16, chastising them for their comportment during last week’s annual turkey pardoning event at the White House.

“Rise to the occasion. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at the bar,” Lauten wrote. “And certainly don’t make faces during televised, public events.” …

Lauten’s Facebook post was shared on Twitter and then picked up by the blogosphere. Most of the online reaction to Lauten’s comments focused on her characterization of the girls’ appearance and their facial expressions, which was especially surprising given her role as a political communication adviser. Some Twitter users accused her of racial overtones in her comments…

Gosh, ya think?

In her post, Lauten also took a dig at the president and first lady, saying “your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department.”

Hours after the original post, Lauten followed up with a second post apologizing for her critique. “I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager,” she wrote.

“After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were. . . . I pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.” …

Which didn’t save her job — although I’m sure somebody in the Wingnut Wurlitzer HR department will find some kind of sinecure to fill Lautner’s Christmas stocking. But, as Mr. Charles P. Pierce reminded me, the real scandal isn’t some PR person committing #twitterfail, it’s the man paying her salary. I typed Rep. Fincher’s name into the google and hit this Rick Ungar Forbes story on the top page:

Tennessee GOP Congressman Stephen Fincher, swept into office in the Tea Party wave of 2010, is on a mission from God.

Armed with an array of proverbs and quotes from the Holy Bible, Congressman Fincher is pressing his fight to dramatically curtail the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—better known to most Americans as food stamps—relied upon by 47 million Americans for some or all of their daily sustenance…

Appearing this past weekend at a gathering at a Memphis Holiday Inn, Fincher explained his position on food stamps by stating, “The role of citizens, of Christians, of humanity is to take care of each other, but not for Washington to steal from those in the country and give to others in the country.”…

Maybe the Congressman can instruct heathens such as I on how pocketing huge sums of taxpayer money in the guise of farm subsidies is a righteous act, while accepting government subsidies to feed one’s family is an act of—to use Fincher’s own words—stealing from those in the country to give to others in the country?…

You see, Representative Fincher happens to be the second largest recipient of farm subsidies in the United States Congress—which might explain why Mr. Fincher would like to decimate the food stamp budget in order to do the Lord’s work when “supporting a proposal to expand crop insurance by $9 billion over the next 10 years.”…

Of course, Rep. Fincher would no doubt explain that he is the freely elected mouthpiece for his good Christian constituents, just as Lauten was his own choice of spokesperson. If only a weekend’s media embarrassment might give those Tennessee voters a hint about rethinking their hiring choices…

Open Thread: Deval Patrick Is Not Running in 2016

by Anne Laurie|  December 1, 20143:51 pm| 109 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, Proud to Be A Democrat, Our Failed Media Experiment

Chuck Toad really wants that ‘Conventional Wisdom Stenographer of the Year” Village Media Idiots award, doesn’t he? (As Malia Obama phrased it: “Sad.”) Via the Atlantic:

Outgoing Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has ruled out running for president in 2016, putting to rest speculation that an end to his gubernatorial career meant that he had his eye on the White House.

“I’ve thought about it, but no, I can’t get ready for 2016,” Patrick said on NBC’s Meet The Press. “This is the first elected office I’ve held, and it has been two really challenging, fun term. But I didn’t run for the job to get another job, just to do this job.”…

Patrick, who led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division from 1993 to 1996, suggested that Eric Holder’s ability to bring a federal civil rights case [in Ferguson] will be hampered by the higher burden needed for federal charges. “It will be very difficult,” he said. “It’s very important I think, that DOJ is investigating it and I know that Attorney General Holder has been urging that investigation and will drive it through to conclusion.”

Of course, Patrick only said he couldn’t “get ready for 2016“, so we’re free to speculate on future campaigns…

If we put a camera on Bill here, will we catch the part where he kills a crate full of baby unicorns and drinks their blood in order to keep on with his unholy existence?

Because you know, baby unicorns.

We’ll Have A Meeting About It

by Zandar|  December 1, 20149:20 am| 123 Comments

This post is in: Don't Mourn, Organize, Readership Capture, Shitty Cops, Rare Sincerity, Stuff About Black People Written By a Black Person, The Dirty F-ing Hippies Were Right

President Obama will be meeting today with AG Eric Holder and community and civil rights leaders about Ferguson and the state of policing in black communities.

President Barack Obama will discuss the situation in Ferguson, Missouri, Monday with his Cabinet, civil rights leaders, law enforcement officials and others.

The White House says Obama’s Cabinet meeting will focus on his administration’s review of federal programs that provide military-style equipment to law enforcement agencies.

The White House says the president will also meet with young civil rights leaders to discuss the challenges posed by “mistrust between law enforcement and communities of color.” He’ll then meet with government and law enforcement officials, as well as other community leaders, to discuss how to strengthen neighborhoods.

The question for the assembled is “Will this actually accomplish anything?”  This is definitely an Obama-style response to the issue, but will a community organizer approach actually accomplish any of the stated goals?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no Ta-Nehisi Coates or Jamelle Bouie or Jelani Cobb when it comes to eloquently defining the struggle over the last 400 years and how Ferguson is yet another chapter in our story, and I’m certainly far from somebody like Goldie Taylor  (who is crowdfunding a documentary on her hometown of East St. Louis called #89BLOCKS) when it comes to community activism.  I’m an IT guy who gets to grouse on the internets and occasionally somebody pays attention.

But it seems to me that the first thing we need to do is get the mindset out of our police departments that they are conducting counterterror operations in hostile, foreign territory.  Ferguson, Missouri is not Fallujah, The whole thing, the training, the surplus military gear given to police departments, the us vs them mentality where cops think the people they are sworn to protect and serve are The Enemy, that needs to be ripped out from these departments.

That brings us back to the President and today’s meetings.  It’s a good start and any solution to the completely valid mistrust of police by the black community must involve police and the black community, but what else can and must be done to stop the bad cops (and not all cops are the problem, mind you, but the ones that are constitute a deadly lethal issue)?

Where are we going on this?

Wyoming Medicaid Expansion

by David Anderson|  December 1, 20147:33 am| 8 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance, Free Markets Solve Everything, Fuck The Poor

The Wyoming basic plan to expand Medicaid has been released late last week.  The plan itself is a waiver application for a modified Expansion rather than a straight expansion.  However, it is fairly straightforward and logical.  It should be quickly approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services.  They have approved far wider waivers in the past two years.  The major stumbling block is that the plan needs the state legislature to approve it as well.  I am a complete naif on Wyoming politics, but I know that the legislature is dominated by Republicans.  I don’t know if the plan will be approved, but it should be a significant improvement over non-Expansion.

The short version is the plan is basic Medicaid with a few benefit modifications and restrictions plus premiums for people who make more than 100% FPL.  This is an improvement over cost sharing Silver plans for someone making between 100% and 138% FPL.

Boots on the ground, from loyal commentor Ozark Hillbilly:

Last Monday, STL had several riots, not just the one in Ferguson. South Grand business district was pretty well trashed as well with the looting of about 2 dozen stores. It is a neighborhood I know well as I first started hanging out down there 4 decades ago as a teenager. Over the past few weeks I have been working on an apartment there and Friday morn I went for a walk with my camera.

Thought folks might want to see that STL may well be racist, but it is a whole lot more than that as well. The 2 “brothers” asked that I take their pic. My fav I think is the Arch.
