Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

This really is a full service blog.

I really should read my own blog.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

White supremacy is terrorism.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

This is epic:

In this clip, a CNN anchor and editor fail to recognize that what they have identified as an “ISIS flag” is actually a flag of dildos and butt plugs, rendered in the style of ISIS.

“If you look at the flag closely, it’s clearly not Arabic,” CNN’s Lucy Pawle admits. “In fact, it looks like it could be gobbledegook. But it’s very distinctively the ISIS flag.” Heh.

I’m in tears.

Low-information viewers, indeed. This is why I heartily agree with the notion “the Most Important Person in TV is …John Oliver.”

In a better TV universe, the idea of a former supporting cast member of Community and The Daily Show such as Oliver being named the most important person in television might be ridiculous — not because he wouldn’t still be great, or his show any less good, but because there’d be so many more serious options. In the world we do live in, Oliver is an oasis. Hopefully, he’ll also prove to be something else: an inspiration to those so-called “real” TV journalists to start doing better.

@ruemara: How about it. It is at this point I note my father has a PhD in military history. Taught at the Army War College. He in fact, wrote the textbook at one point on the use of air power during war. He kind of understands both military strategy and tactics.

I love when he is over and CNN or MSNBC has these military “experts” on talking about this or that.

Sometimes he will say, “I had that individual in class, he couldn’t think his way out of a wet paper bag.” Or more generally speaking, “these folks have NO clue what they are talking about.”

Why I almost never listen to much less trust any of the “experts” I see on TV these days talking about war or the military!

This really belonged in an earlier thread but I have been elbow deep in making cherry jam and dried apples.

Does everyone know the significance of “Amazing Grace”? The song our President sang the other day was written by a guy that had been a ships captain transporting slaves from Africa to the New World. He had his moment on the “road to Damascus” and understood what he had been doing was evil. The hymn is a repentance for the wrongs he had done. That makes the significance of it at that event, by that man, even greater than simply a hymn.

@Tommy: I haven’t seen him in years since I pretty much gave up on CNN, but I always thought Bergen did a pretty good job. I was kind of curious as to what he would say, not enough to look at CNN, and I guess it’s too late, but I imagine he went into a lot of generalities.

Maybe I’m not paranoid enough, but I didn’t look at those fuzzy pictures and think, “By Jingo! An ISIS FLAG!”

kind of related, a funny moment on MSNBC today, the anchor asked Larry Sabato (who I thought would be on Fox by now) if running against same sex marriage would help a Republican in the general, and he all but rolled his eyes at the question. “No. I hope you have a follow up”. Brought the anchor up short.

Well I got Sling (a streaming service) a few weeks ago just for ESPN, HBO, and the History Channel, but they also have CNN. I’ve tuned in for a few hours.

When I got rid of cable I found RT as a one media outlet for news on my Roko. Russian television. Let me say that again Russian TV based in the West.

Now as a military brat that grew up during the “Cold War,” enduring nuclear drills at school, watching the channel still makes me feel somewhat strange.

But their big name is Sophie Shevardnadze. Her show is SophieCo. Google it! She is doing some of the best TV journalism around. A freaking “fire plug.”

She doesn’t back down from anything or anybody. It is wonderful to watch. Puts our so called “journalist” in our nation to shame with both what she has to say and her guest, which seem to be really smart and experts on what they are asked to talk about.

    New times, new ideas:

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID), reintroduced legislation to clarify and strengthen religious liberty protections in federal law, by safeguarding those individuals and institutions who promote traditional marriage from government retaliation.

The First Amendment Defense Act (S. 1598, H.R. 2802) would prevent any federal agency from denying a tax exemption, grant, contract, license, or certification to an individual, association, or business based on their belief that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. For example, the bill would prohibit the IRS from stripping a church of its tax exemption for refusing to officiate same-sex weddings.

Obama (and/or a speechwriter who may have helped write that eulogy) certainly is aware of this information, I have no doubt. He very deliberately chose the theme of grace and the meaning of that song. I would really like to know if his choice to sing was spontaneous. Even if it wasn’t it was so moving and real. The single most heartfelt thing I’ve ever seen a president do, FWIW.

Anyone interested in the history of the song ought to check out this film:

Amen. If our deficit is such a big deal, shouldn’t everybody chip in?

I don’t think the deficit is the problem it is made out to be, but count me in. I am now in the upper middle class. When my parents pass, I will be in the top 1% of not .05%. Tax me. Please tax me. Tax the shit out of me.

I will one day be blessed with the curse that my parents died, but at that time I will have more money then I can spend in a lifetime. I am the oldest son and I get all the financial documents.

We have what we call “the last to die” insurance policy to pay any taxes on the Estate. It stands now, according to the last statement I got, at $1.8M. Do the math.

My parents as they get into their late 60s have asked me what I will do with the money. I say, selfly, put some in trust to earn me money, the rest I will just give away. They are like WTF, give it away.

I am like yes give it away. How much is too much? I have more shit now then I need on many levels. I don’t need a better car. My house rocks. I got all the “nice” things I need. I don’t need more.

This. The structure of news shows on commercial channels is antithetical to informing the public, and anyone worth hearing would be wise to stay away from them.

The sole purpose of such shows is to generate advertising revenue. That’s why you’ll hear absurd questions like this: “Quickly now, because we have to go to a break….Let me ask each of you: Should the US put boots on the ground in Iraq? Just ‘yes’ or ‘no’!…”. The same thing happens in presidential debates: “If you were elected president would you do {X}? Yes or no?”.

There was some guy a couple of decades ago that touted himself as an “expert” in some field that CNN called on to bloviate, and that he did. Just to underscore a point that I haven’t really seen made over the last week that clearly illustrates what was gained this week:

Corporations really are (for good or ill) the greatest barometer of where society is on these issues. This week we saw every major retailer including Walmart voluntarily step up and ban the sale of any merchandise with a confederate flag on it. Valley Forge Flag company will refuse to make them any longer. We also saw pretty much every major corporation put up rainbow colors yesterday on websites, Twitter, Facebook, etc. There’s no concern of boycotts, no worry about shareholder value being eroded. When Wall Street jumps on board, you’ve won. We’ve won, and won big. It’s not over, there’s a ton still left to do. Losing the confederate flag is at most symbolic. Gays can still be fired just for being gay in too many places. Families can still be denied the ability to adopt. But there is no going back. These are permanent steps forward, this is real momentum.

I love corn on the cob. For years I couldn’t really eat it because teeth. But then! about 14 years ago I got dental implants* and now I try to make up for lost time by enjoying CotC whenever I can. Also apples.

*The very first thing I did once the implant teeth were installed was to go to a bar and order a Bloody Mary. Not because I particularly wanted to drink, but because I wanted to experience the satisfying crunch of a stalk of celery after having gone toothless for 13 months.

@Aleta: Oh yes I have a large collection of note cards. Mom is slow to give them up but as I get them they are entered. I could be the casserole king if I wanted :).

@SiubhanDuinne: My dad’s parents were super rich. World travelers. Meals in their house was an affair that went on for hours. I have their China and I think if I sold it I might be able to buy a house. Never used it once.

My mom’s parents the exact opposite. Salt of the earth people. Bootstraps. They cooked a lot of pork. Often on the bone. They used a fork and knife, but when they got to the bone it was all hands. Pick it up ….

I can almost recall the first time seeing this. To touch your food with your hands was a foreign concept to me. I started to do the same and thinking, “wow, there is some good meat here.”

I did the same at my dad’s house and got my hands slapped.

Well I eat a ton of pork now, about my favorite meat if I will eat meat, and I always finish the meal with my hands. Love you grandmother!

Just a shot out to liberals.

I am finishing up a huge e-Commerce site for a client. One of the last items we needed to figure out was how we’d ship stuff.

We looked at all the shippers. I am happy to say we are going with the United States Postal Service. Now my client is as raging of a liberal as I am, but he wants to make money. We looked at all the services and honestly the USPS had the best product for the best price. There wasn’t even any real competition. Can you hear this, our postage service rocks!

When he decided on this I sent him two of these. A stamp he can put on each package that says “Snail mail with love”:

No one has EVER suggested that churches be required to provide space for same sex weddings, or for their pastors to officiate.

They are saying it all over the media right now. “Christians will be forced to…. ”

I see it in as much good faith as FEMA Camps and death panels. But they are certainly saying it.

I have no patience for people who long for the good old days when life was simpler.

Most of them are longing for their childhood, or for some imaginary childhood. It’s not because life was simpler back then, but because their understanding was simpler. They’re incapable of recognizing the difference.

@Roger Moore: Some, yes, but we were visiting Valley Forge and walking through the house there, and a guy actually said to me that he’d like to have lived bcd then when life was so much simpler. He wasn’t saying he wanted to participate in the war in any manner, and after understanding what winter was really like there no sane person today should want to, patriotism aside. I pointed out a couple of things like modern medicine and PAINKILLERS, and he shut up.

@catclub: I am watching Obama for the first time speak at Clementa Pinckney’s eulogy. I needed a little time before I could watch it.

I was kind of stunned to see this was a Methodist church. I was raised in the Methodist church, and I might be an atheist, but if there was a church I’d join it would be the Methodist church. It was such an open and welcoming, non-judgemental place.

Even now, years after a gay marriage law passed in my state, the sign out front didn’t say “hey gays come in you are welcome,” but about as close as it could get.

“Come one come all, you are ALL welcome here …..” The message was clear.

@Tommy: no, it’s an African Methodist Episcopal church. Not a United Methodist church.

There was a UMC in San Francisco that had a gospel service. I don’t know what it’s like now but the lead pastor was black. I think he might have been the bishop.

I was raised in the Methodist church too.

Got to be a bit of a killjoy, but I’m disappointed in whoever chose to fly the dildo and buttplugs flag. It cheapens the effort that was made and the risks that were taken.

Killjoy? Obviously. And add satire resistant as well as geographically challenged.

The flag was a bit of political satire and defiance yanking the beards of gay killin crazy fucks. An “Up Yours” as it were.

And this guy was in London, UK. Not Kentucky. Just what effort was he cheapening?

    @Villago Delenda Est:

the organist was prepared to start firing up, and seemed to be listening carefully for clues, because a few notes came out at various times that were keyed to Obama’s use of the words.

I have had the pleasure to attend just a few services with congregations like Mother Emanuel when I did advance work in Ohio for the 76 Carter-Mondale campaign. The organists were sharp as nails and grand improvisers.

    @catclub:

There was a court case a few years ago where a church was renting out their hall for non-church wedding receptions, birthdays, retirement parties, etc. and they refused to rent it to a gay couple. They lost, because they had basically turned themselves into a public accommodation by allowing non-church groups to rent it for non-church activities. But a misremembered version of that story and why the church lost is probably what they’re referring to.

    Jiggery Pokery
Jiggery pokery, according to the Ninth Doctor, was a technical term. He jokingly remarked that he “came first in jiggery pokery.” (TV: The End of the World) The Third Doctor once claimed that he had “some experience” with jiggery pokery. (PROSE: Generation Gap)
