Not much to say about the women’s game yet, but I was watching that Brazil game too. I was actually looking forward to a Brazil-Argentinia semifinal. I guess not.

Why no extra time in the Brazil game? They went straight to PKs

Probably not at this rate.

Not so far!

And another! Holy shnikeys!

Second cold shower for the Canadiennes. That’s gonna be hard to come back from.

@KG: Copa America ios strange that way
SRW1
@KG:
Normal proceedings in the Copa America. Same thing happened in the Arg – Col game.
KG
@Randinho: ah, thanks. Watching at the pub and thought it might have had to do with weather and player safety

Unfortunately, doesn’t look like it :-(
I’m actually watching the game with an Englishman (who, of course, is gloating like mad). Normally I’d be all about England, but Canada gave me a dream job and paid my salary for a quarter of a century, so it would be really churlish of me to root against them.

what game!
going balls out!
SRW1
Good choice by the Canadiennes to tug one in just before halftime. Awful mistake by the English goalie.

How am I supposed to watch womens soccer when I have to plan my divorce since Obama just decreed that everyone has to get gay married?

Fox ruling expert just said Japan won on an offsides goal. they had a great overhead shot.

@David Koch:
Yeah, that shot finally convinced me. I stand corrected.
Poopyman
@David Koch: Can they do that in the women’s game?

That eye looks bad.

Apropos one of the English players going by the name of Bronze: Given how far the lionesses have already advanced at this tournament, they would be entitled to go to the Rio Olympics. However, because participation at the Olympics is by country and because the UK federations don’t do a UK team they will stay home.

@SRW1: Well damn.

I realized what is bothering me about the announcers (not just this game, most of the others, too): they cannot stop sounding dramatic—melodramatic. The subtext is that the game is not enough by itself or that the audience needs to be coaxed along. Maybe I’m overinterpreting, but it is irritating me. I am mentally comparing/contrasting with memories of the announcers in the men’s World Cup matches.
At least this match doesn’t have the “on frame” announcer—about which, yes, I have an issue. Is that a U.S. youth/college game phrase? I haven’t seen/heard it anywhere else. And Kyndra de St. Aubin is really giving it a workout in this World Cup.

Guardian live blog says the lionesses are happy to sit on their lead. I think that about captures proceedings in the 2nd half so far.

@SRW1:
One good point the (female) announcer made a while ago is that it’s dangerous for England to do that, because if Canada equalizes it’s hard to make the switch from “hold steady” back to attack mode.

After what we have seen from Japan and England today, I expect US – Ger to be the far more dramatic semifinal. Wouldn’t surprise me if Japan – England has to be settled in a pk shootout after a goalless or a lowscoring draw.

So, two Allies v Axis semifinals. Hoping for an Allies v Allies final.
