Let’s do it at Ventnor’s, 2411 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, at 8. It has an upstairs and a downstairs and I don’t know which will be better but I’m leaning towards the downstairs. I always mean to bring a Balloon and forget, the closest I can think of is a green polo shirt that I’ll wear (in honor of Green Balloons).
Hope to see you all there.
Update. Per Redshift’s comments, it looks like the debate watching will be upstairs.
Update update Looks there’s a bus from Woodley Park Metro to less than a block from the bar.
Cervantes
Have a great time, all you gallivanters!
sharl
I probably won’t be able to make this; damn shame, I’d like to meet ya, DougJ!
I’ve rarely visited that area, and the last time was long ago. From online maps, I don’t see a nearby Metro rail stop. The Woodley Park-Zoo station appears to be closest, and it is just under a mile away, if Google Maps is telling me the truth. Hopefully this link to that map will work, for anyone who’s interested.
Another Holocene Human
$1 Oyster night? I’m jelly.
On the gulf coast right now. Every restaurant has struck through, turned around, or painted over their “oyster” line on their menus. Thanks, BP!
(Drought years kill the Gulf oysters too but this summer has rained plenty.)
DougJ
@sharl:
Yeah, it isn’t quite as Metro friendly as it could be but it’s a great area!
boatboy_srq
Enjoy! I’m stuck in the NoVA wastelands today and can’t get there after all.
JohnPM
When can we have a Chicago meet-up? Have fun in DC!
Elizabelle
@boatboy_srq: Oh no! Looked forward to catching up with you!
Let’s do a meetup after Labor Day. If nothing else, we have the Murphy’s $25 gift cert to drink up.
Elizabelle
Bring umbrellas. Heavy rain forecast this evening.
Redshift
According to DCist, the debate watch is going to be upstairs. I’m planning to be there.
Gin & Tonic
@Another Holocene Human: Come up north. Plenty of oysters here (and I suitably celebrated National Oyster Day yesterday.)
SmallAxe
Location means driving or uBering from NoVa won’t be able to make it this time sorry. Have fun though!
boatboy_srq
@Elizabelle: Me too. Metro had MAJOR issues this morning, so I stayed home. Murphy’s sounds like a plan.
PaulW
@Redshift:
Figured this would be for a debate watch party.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY, AMERICA!
Gin & Tonic
Since this appears to be a food thread (it is, isn’t it?) here’s video of Russia destroying illegal (i.e. Western) cheese.
Sherparick
Wish I could join you, but have just got back from a trip to St. Louis and need to go straight home from work to appease the Spouse and the cats.
Infamous Heel-Filcher
Looks like I might just make it.
DougJ
@Infamous Heel-Filcher:
Great
Uncle Cosmo
@DougJ:
Sorry, but any “great area” that can’t be reached by any reasonable transportation option is by definition a SHITTY area.
Location (a MILE to the nearest Metro station????) and late start (what was wrong with 7 PM????) means MARC/Metro from Baltimore “No Va”. Driving (& drinking overpriced diet soda) is the onliest option, with an extra half-hour to find a parking space. Grrrr….
I may still end up there, as I have an unrelated task in DC that needs doing–but jeebus cripes, Doogie, you would’ve had to work really hard to make this more of a PITA for potential attendees. It would serve your inconsiderate butt right if everyone else said “fuck it” & you ended up drinking alone.
Evap
I’ll walk the .7 miles from the Math Fest venue, but will probably Uber back, either to the Faragut West or Foggy Bottom metro stop or all the way to Arlington (I’m near VA square). I’m happy to share if that helps anyone.
DougJ
@Uncle Cosmo:
Sorry about that…someone posted a list of suggestions of places that were definitely showing it and these looked like the best choices.
sharl
@sharl: For those who prefer the Green or Yellow line – Woodley Park – Zoo is on the Red line – the U St. Metro station is almost the same distance from the venue. Link to Google map.
As someone noted upthread, we have a high probability of rainy weather predicted for this evening.
{Meant to post this additional stuff before, but had to run off to a meeting…}
Paul in KY
@JohnPM: Would love to have a ‘Tri-State’ meetup either in Cinn or Louisville. Come on, Zandar, get cracking on that!
MattF
@sharl: FWIW, they’re no longer predicting a deluge, just an ordinary rainstorm. But I sorta agree that the inconveniences have piled up here.
Elizabelle
@sharl: Wish you could come, sharl.
I’m doing Woodley Park metro and walking over. Nice neighborhood and a tall bridge over Rock Creek Park to cross. Hopefully, not in driving rain …
Elizabelle
@MattF: Do y’all think we might reconsider the place? Would it make a difference to find something more easily accessible?
We could figure out a likely count, and I’m sure some bar with a TV would be happy to host us …
Cervantes
@Uncle Cosmo:
Or words to that effect — I agree.
wesindc
Aww man, was planning on attending since not far from my place but my corporate overlords told me I have to work tonight. Sad Panda.
wesindc
Adams Morgan is inaccessible? Plenty of buses that go straight down/up 18th from various Metro stops.
MattF
@Elizabelle: Probably too late for that. I’ll most likely be there, but won’t be able to hang around after, because have to get to work tomorrow while also being awake.
Elizabelle
@MattF: You sticking around for Jon Stewart signoff? (Although you can record it, too.)
I notice Fox will rebroadcast the big kids debate again overnight, but not Lindsey Graham’s “happy hour” debate at 5. That one might be entertaining, but Carly Fiorina? groan
sharl
@wesindc: That’s a good point (though I still won’t be able to make it). I did see a lot of bus stops in that area.
In all my years in this area, I’ve never used the Metro bus system; I need to check that out.
EdTheRed
@Uncle Cosmo:
The Circulator runs every few minutes from the Woodley Park metro station right to Adams Morgan. Just one stop. The ride is a flat $1, and you can use your SmarTrip card. It’s actually really easy.
http://www.dccirculator.com/Home/BusRoutesandSchedules/CirculatorRouteMap.aspx
MattF
@Elizabelle: Probably not hang around to see Stewart.
And Fiorina’s constituency is limited to the powers-that-be in the RNC. “See, we like girls. Really.”
Elizabelle
@MattF: Especially girls who are our designated attack b*tch against Hillary Clinton. See — women don’t like Hillary after all.
Uncle Cosmo
@DougJ: I’d been hoping for a DC meetup I could make because I’d kinda like to get to know some of the unusual suspects around here. Your choice for a venue makes it clear the main/only order of bidniz will be watching something I consider a waste of time. Pass.
Caphilldcne
My apologies. Had planned to come but now have a long work night that I need to do.
Nora Carringtonhe
I’m sorry I missed you guys; have many thoughts about the debate and hope to dip in later upstream to share.
