Everyone who has voted for a Republican at the local, state, and national level since at least when Palin is the nominee is to blame for this.

We witnessed a Trump rally at the table next to us at a nice restaurant. Almost ruined our date night! Three generations of rich white people, clad head to toe in vineyard vines gear, braying like asses over how refreshing a candidate The Donald is. We’re so boned.

I am stunned Trump likes to highlight his wealth. My parents have more money than they could spend in a lifetime but they don’t talk about it. Heck they don’t even really spend it. Mom likes to get the ads thrown on her driveway to save a buck here or there.
My parents don’t have billions like Trump, but tens of millions and never something they talk about. Let me say that again, never something they talk about.

Someone has to stand up and say that this has been what we’ve done for over a hundred and fifty years; it works and works well for America; this b/s about “anchor babies” is way overstated as an issue…a smokescreen, perhaps, that takes away from how well the 1% have done since 1981, and that Trump’s solution is no solution at all.

@jl: There was a modernist element to Italian fascism that made it seem avant garde to those who didn’t know better. A unified Italian state had only existed for 60 or so years, and many parts of the country were still living under social conditions that had not changed much since the Middle Ages.
The American fascists we see now want to take a modern country and return it to the Middle Ages.

There’s a political environmental conference meeting in Tahoe on Monday, so if you’re going to be out on the roads may want to check first as to which are impacted by security closures or slowdowns.
jl
@Tommy: Parts of the Sierra look like a beautiful sleek modernist granite rock garden. Hard to believe some one did not plan it and plant it.
I think northern rockies, Glacier up through Banff and Lake Louise just as beautiful to me.
And if you like that granite look, Northern Appalachians in northern NY through New England have a different but similar kind of look, with more broad leaf forest.
Though, if you hike, interesting that the first upthrust of much of the northern Sierra Nevada is metamorphic, not granite or other igneous rock, and you get a very different feel and look. Some very nice day hikes from Tioga Road around Mount Dana good for seeing this. Try that if you decide to take long way around to Tahoe sometime. Drive along the eastern side of Sierra, which is very beautiful and lots of nice hiking.
Edit: and I was joking about ‘San Fran’. I don’t think any natives here give a rats ass about what you call it. I grew up in Central Valley (aka sad hick land for these SF Bay Area snoots) and I raze them all the time about this high class dump.

Because TRUMP! is not owned by the big money guys who own the party. He’s his own man. An oozing flow of human id. He’s the apothesis of what the GOP has been preaching since Reagan–anti-government, anti-governance, hates everything–with no brakes.
The complete failure of the Republican party, as an institution capable of policing its own candidates to push them into a zone that’s electable by the other half of Americans, is frightening. The candidate who can take advantage of that failure so adeptly, who already has the support of so many primary voters, is dangerous.

@seaboogie: Good point.
Frank Bolton
And then he’d say something like: “Do something less ineffectual like openly cheer for apartheid or beat up anti-war protesters while wearing hardhats or laugh at AIDS victims! This Trump shit is beneath you; if you’re going to fuck the world over to feed your egos, don’t do it half-assed!”
Face it: there’s nothing particularly unusual about this strain of conservative hysteria. Certainly not compared to after 9/11, or with the Gingrich Revolution, or with the rise of the fucking Religious Right. Well, Trump inching in the direction of economic progressivism while going hardcore nativist is a bit novel, but it’s not fucking 1972 or even 1994 anymore, people. Take a chill pill. Take a whole bottle of them and repeat after me: “The country has changed since McGovern’s defeat and none of this shit is particularly unusual when viewed in context.”
Timurid
Trump wants attention.
He doesn’t want to be President. Being President is hard work and way too much responsibility for a coward like him.
If there’s any danger of him winning in 2016 he’ll sabotage himself the same way Perot did, for the same reason.

@seaboogie: In my family, we say the dirt is just churning.
SWMBO
@Timurid: Maybe Trump will get cold feet when he realizes he has to put his money in a blind trust. And maybe he figures that it will be safer there than in his own hands. No more bankruptcy for him or his businesses!

@Tommy: I’ve lived here for 20 years. You’re so right
jon
@Timurid: He has no idea how hard it is to be President, having only seen it on television. But he’s too dumb to actually think about it, too egotistical to realize he hasn’t thought about it, and too greedy to let the thought of failure stop him at this point. He’s serious about running, regardless of how serious he is about anything.
jon
@SWMBO: I have yet to hear of anyone in any of those blind trusts doing poorly. Have you?
Gex
Voting GOP up through W’s second campaign brought us to McCain/Palin. The party was as insane on policy and as hateful towards others prior to the Terry Schiavo incident as they are now. The only people who couldn’t see that were the people who weren’t on their enemies list.
I’m not sure how you draw the line at people who kept voting GOP when Palin was picked, as I don’t see a functional difference between Palin and W.
apocalipstick
@redshirt: There is a distinction between “having it” and “rubbing people’s noses in it.”
A guy
Trump is going to win because he is a winner. Unlike obama
BobS
@Gex: Was that when Cole stopped voting Republican?
