Hillary went to Seattle in advance of this weekend’s caucuses, and she’s got supporters even if the city isn’t a natural fit for her:
… As he waited in line to see Clinton, Paul Coblentz, 51, of Tukwila said he supports Clinton for her depth of experience, especially on foreign policy, and her ability to work across the political aisle.
“Bernie is the future of the Democratic party in concept, in the long run,” Coblentz said. “He is where we want to get to as Democrats. Hillary will get us there. She’s going to know how to get things done.”
She managed to charm at least one Stranger reporter:
…[T]he thing that wowed me the most about Clinton’s presence was her incredibly efficient and well-managed selfie-taking system.
Here’s how it worked. After her speech, Clinton stepped off the stage. Security surrounded her and formed a circular barrier. Screaming people held out their phones to her. And then, in one fluid motion, Clinton would grab a phone from a supporter’s hand, frame the selfie, turn off flash, tap the persons face to focus the camera on them, snap the photo, hand it back to the now trembling supporter, and then move on to the next outstretched hand. Boom. Boom. Boom. She did like 20 of them in a minute and a half. So quick. So gracefull. So managerial. She was just as good with an Android as she was with an iPhone. She was compatible across all platforms. I couldn’t stop watching.
The effect of taking this selfie with supporters—instead of only shaking a hand or kissing a baby on the cheek—is easy to understate. But when you see girls and young women staring at their selfie with the Secretary of State and fanning themselves as if they were staring at a heartthrob in a teen movie, it’s hard not to see each one of those selfies as secured votes…

you know, I really think Ms. Clinton has taken to heart certain lessons and experiences and really wants to help people. I think she can and she will. She’s made mistakes, sometimes caught up playing the great game and yet I still get the idea that her main drive and focus is helping people. Is she ambitious, no doubt, will she screw up, most likely in some capacity. Yet I really think she’s paid attention over the last 8 years and can apply those lessons learned. If anyone can handle the GOP, it’s her, she’s been dealing with these assholes for well over 25 years now. I have faith.

My hope is with the Democratic side more or less settled, the lengthy tumultuous Republican shitstorm continues for months and keeps repelling decent people to the point the Senate is in play. Only then will I have my pony. Selah.

So…a bit of a possible bombshell at work today…
my former supervisor who stepped down to work as a bench tech (he now works along side us after they hired the new supervisor) is allegedly leaving in June to work at the local VA hospital. this is the same hospital I applied to and interviewed for a Lead Texh position.
jobs in Micro are hard to come by here, so when they have them everybody know about them. the only job that has been open at VA is the Lead Tech position. So of course I’m wondering if my former Supe also applied for the position…
I’m not sure if its for the position I applied for or not Sepia.
But I was holding off on emailing the lady about the job, it’s been 3 weeks today though, so after hearing this news, I emailed her right quick.
Short and sweet…
so now I’m awaiting a return email

My best friend at work got laid off today. It was extremely disappointing to learn that news. I didn’t get to say goodbye before she left.
She leaves behind a department that is in utter chaos. How they’ll manage without her is going to be interesting given she covered so much ground.
redshirt
@hellslittlestangel: That’s an interesting take. Can you elaborate?

@RobertDSC-Quad Intel Mac: Why did she get laid off? Is your company failing?

We were at her rally in Seattle on Tuesday. Waited in line from 4pm until after 7:30, and it was pretty cold when the wind picked up.
The event was in the gym at Rainier Beach HS, the only black majority HS in the state. There were lots of teens from the school, lots of adults of every background, and lots of young people. Thinking back, there were lots of people in their mid-20s to mid-30s, more than I expected. I think we were with all the old people in the building, about 30 of us. We were introduced to a 14 yo who was so passionate about Hillary that she worked hard to become the captain of the caucus in her district.
The gym holds about 2500, and that’s about how many were there, and many were turned away at the door. It seemed like a last-minute event and we only found out about it by accident. Coverage on KIRO (CBS) was decidedly tepid compared to their enthusiastic coverage of Bernie’s rally at Key Arena a couple of days earlier.
I have to say that I was impressed. Since it was billed as a rally I expected it to be just a pep rally, but she laid out her goals and how she planned to achieve them. I was already for her, but it’s nice to feel that encouraged by your choice. I think she’ll be a fine president.
Bernie’s holding another rally on Friday, this time at Safeco Field, where the Mariners play baseball. I would like to go hear him speak too, but I’m not sure I’m up for standing outside for several hours again.

Bill Moyers has a great post at Huffington Post (I know) saying that HRC must repudiate Rahm and DWS since they are no true Democrats.

I was four people back from the rope line, could not get up close enough for my own selfie. My best view of her on the rope line was on the screen of everyone else’s phones held aloft.
During the speech, if she were facing 12 o’clock, I was at about 8.

@opiejeanne:
I’m tempted to go by just to see if there are any obnoxious Hillary supporters with signs chanting at the people in line. I hope not.

@Mike J: Were there obnoxious Bernie supporters at the Hillary event?
We were to Hillary’s left, by the steps of the press stand. You were not far away from us.

@opiejeanne:
I got in line about 6, so I was out on the side walk for a long time before we got to the part of the line in the parking lot. The line eventually ran down the street, around the corner, and up a couple of blocks.
And yes, there were Bernie supporters going up and down the line with signs, chanting. There were also idiots with a Benghazi sign, but at least they were quiet. I had more respect for them than the brogressives. There were several BLM people who had signs, but they actually walked up to people and started conversations. That’s the way to get your message out.
My biggest complaint was that they (venue? Secret Service? KC Dems?) only had two metal detectors. I did find it humorous to see the guys running the detectors wearing black body armor with SECRET SERVICE emblazoned in large letters. Didn’t seem very secret.

I think Hillary has really matured (if that is possible for a 69 year old) during this campaign. She is showing more of her human side, which is endearing, and has become a much more confident public speaker. As has been noted by almost every pundit, left and right, Bernie has also pulled her further left, which I appreciate a great deal. Her biggest liability now, and it seems very odd to write this, is her husband, Bill!
opiejeanne
@Mike J: We were up near the steps, maybe 100 people ahead of us, so we missed the idiocy.
What is wrong with these people? Do they hope to win people over to their side by this harassment?
Mike J
@opiejeanne: If there were 2500 people in there, I was probably number 2490.
By the time I got to the steps, the “anarchists” were there, also screaming non stop that the state should be destroyed and nobody should be president.
opiejeanne
@Mike J: Those people are a major pain. They should go harass Trump’s fans.

The selfies are a thrill for the people who get them with Hillary, because a FB friend got one and was delighted. Especially since she was supposed to be the last one but a group of young girl scouts was behind her, so she let them go in front. She heard Hillary talking to them, saying she had been a Girl Scout too, and then my friend was asked to step up for her picture. Hillary had noticed she had let the girls go ahead.

@Lamh36: Oh dearheart. Federal hiring is SLOOOOOW. Like bad. In my current position it took 7 weeks from application to hire. Everyone I know in the government was SHOCKED. When I started at the IRS I didn’t know I had the job until just before I started. My suggestion: be patient, but do keep up with your contact and don’t be frustrated if they say they don’t know anything. A LOT of hands usually have to sign off on these things.

@NotMax: I used to take pictures of landmarks and landscapes while I was on vacation, and my family yelled at me when I got home and shared my photos because they wanted to see pictures of me in front of the landmarks and landscapes. So now it’s either take a selfie or get someone else to take a photo for me.

@FlipYrWhig: Okay, found it. What’s the beef? I wouldn’t want her in my cabinet. Should Ted Cruz offer Donald Trump the Secretary of State job in his cabinet?
And what’s so dickish about being honest, Whig?
Bob In Portland
@FlipYrWhig:
I can hear your anger. You’re often angry and attacking people. And now you attack “middle-aged wannabe radical” supporters. Is it that you think that you possess the true left on the political spectrum and anyone else is a phony?
By the way, I’m a senior citizen, so you’ll have to aim at an older demographic to attack me.
Litany
@FlipYrWhig: Not so crazy on the hippie-punching. As Coblentz points out, eventually we’ll have to get back to a left that can talk about class and articulate an alternative to neo-liberalism. Clinton is a product of the last big retreat from progressive economics in American politics, and Bernie (for all his failings and inadequacies) is not. The fact that such a poor candidate is doing so well despite himself speaks to just how vital and important his message is in the current political climate.
More to the point, Clinton is tremendously indebted to the various financial interests who have subsidized her campaign, all of whom are interested in perpetuating inequality. Are Democrats just better people, somehow able to resist the allure of money? Because otherwise this critique of campaign finance doesn’t really hold up when it comes out of her mouth.
WarMunchkin
Sorry, but this is just wrong. I don’t really understand all of these arguments about how Bernie is the future. Was Eugene McCarthy the future? or Ted Kennedy in 1980? No. They were not. Sanders isn’t the future – he’s just a popular candidate during a time of exceptional economic distress that assigns blame to banks and the wealthy instead of skirting around that fact and during a time where the presumptive nominee is hurt by her gender and historic unfavorability ratings. That’s it.
That’s not the future, and whatever you want to call it – the “Democratic wing of the Democratic Party”, purity ponies, PUMAs, progressives – ritually get put down every four to eight years. Why is that the narrative of this election?
Lee
I agree with others. That selfie story really was interesting.
There is no way she would be the candidate is today without losing 8 years ago and also have Bernie pushing from her left.
JustRuss
The selfie thing is brilliant. Shake a person’s hand and you win their vote. Take a selfie with them and it’s posted all over the internet and seen by hundreds, maybe thousands of their friends/relatives/acquaintances.
Frivolous
@redshirt: No, never. I don’t mess around with cameras or photo-capable cellphones.
Litany
@WarMunchkin: Because the millennial generation is really, really liberal. In a recent poll that the New York Times quoted, Bernie led Hillary with 17-29 year olds by 70 points. Once millennials hit that age where they actually come out and vote, those whacky views they have will start to matter. And more to the point, Sanders is doing really stinking well considering how much money and clout Clinton has amassed. You write that Sanders is winning voters on the basis of his gender, which I 100% agree with. I can’t imagine a female politician with Bernie’s beliefs and rhetoric doing well, and I can’t imagine the race being this close if a male version of Hillary was running in her place. That being said, there’s a reason that voters flocked to Sanders and not O’Malley. Sanders is running an exceptional campaign which demonstrates that you can mobilize voters and generate enthusiasm by running on old-style economic progressive policy, big government and all. Future politicians would be stupid to ignore that.
None of this is really that surprising. Cyclical theory would tell us that we’re about due for another political realignment. The Rs have gone so far to the right that they’re fracturing and likely won’t be competitive at the Presidential level for some time to come. An entire generation of prospective voters started thinking about politics during the Bush years and cast their votes in an election where Trump could lead the Republican nomination process. We’re also living in time of great inequalities in wealth: to find a precedent for current levels of inequality you have to go back to the gilded age. And protest movements around progressive causes like BLM and Occupy are on the rise. I don’t know what to tell you except that there will be some changes.
Hansnannasdad
I’ll believe that the millennials are going to change American politics when I see them show up in the midterm years. We need to win all the elections. I’ll believe Bernie wants a political revolution when he starts motivating young voters to show up in 2018.
I won’t be holding my breath.

This is not a brag or even a humble brag – but my ten-year-old daughter has a genius-level IQ, and her eyes light up unbelievably bright when she talks about Hillary Clinton possibly becoming president. This makes me think that, though they may be “correct” ideologically in the progressivism, old white dudes like Bernie and Bill Moyers, with their fucking purity tests, just can’t hack it any longer. They are not the future. Hell, Hillary is not really the future either, but my kid looks at Bernie and sees a guy who she can’t relate to. Almost as old as her gramps. Hillary takes that budding genius mind to new places. I want the little girls like my kid – the really smart ones, the ones who raise their hands first in class and who want to compete with all the other kids to get the answer right – to be spurred forward by what they see in the next president. I look at my kid and wonder is that what Hillary was like as a kid and I think, yeah, maybe. I can’t adequately describe what that means, but I’ll try a little bit.
For a girl like my kid, it’s immeasurable inspiration to see that woman leading the charge. That means something real to her. A Bernie candidacy to me is not representative of our future. I don’t feel like he’s bringing us something new in his perspective. I guess I don’t want any old white dudes running the executive branch next year. An older white lady is preferable to me because of her different experiences and the different things she will draw from. America has done pretty well with the Kenyan Muslim guy. We need less old white dudes leading the charge. We need to set up our kids to see their futures differently.
Sorry, old white dudes. No offense intended. Your lives do matter, too, but you’re not the future of the good ol US or A. You guys don’t get to pick what you want all the time, any more.
For me the choice this time around is not just about the above. I have a zillion other reasons for picking Hillary. But it is also about containing the shit-show that is the House and maybe, just maybe, having control of the Senate again. I don’t think with Bernie that we get the calm and competence to deal with the former and not enough coattails to get the latter.
One of the only times I have been grateful to have an airport delay was the day of the Benghazi!!!11!!1!!! hearings. I got to watch hour after hour of that woman utterly fucking dismantle every single trope those assholes trotted out. Sorry. Bernie can’t do it like that. He’s good, but he don’t got chops like Hillary do.
We need a general election candidate who can do more to get the Obama coalition to turn out, and who has some rock star pull. Some of you/us may not like it, but that is the world we live in, and that rock star ain’t Bernie. He’s a good man and he’s done the Democratic party a huge service this year, but he’s not a president, not to my mind. YMMV and all. Blah blah blah. I’m done.
