Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Second rate reporter says what?

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

We still have time to mess this up!

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Great speech. She's tested. She's ready. She never quits. That's why Hillary should be our next @POTUS. (She'll get the Twitter handle, too)

Hey, Stubby Drumpf, remember that Muslim father whose son gave his life for our country? The one who offered to lend you his copy of the US Constitution, since you clearly haven’t read it? The one who reminded you that Arlington Cemetery is filled with people from all faiths and ethnicities, which you wouldn’t know because you have sacrificed nothing and no one?

This is what long fingers look like.

Now you’ve got even more to feel insecure about, you feckless dipshit.

Slept like a baby, which is so unusual for me now that I’m old. I’ve watched two conventions every 4 years, never saw anything like this one, which was like a 4 part symphony over the four days. We didn’t get every speaker by any means, but we got most all the highlights!

Starting with Michelle, with one of the best speeches from a bunch of really good speakers, even Tim Kaine did well. Couldn’t believe the Rs who made up their minds he was wearing a flag pin from another country!

Chelsea kept stepping on her applause, could have just stopped talking for a minute so many times and gotten a standing O, but couldn’t bear to be quiet while the arena erupted around her until the end.

Hillary did what she needed to do, told her story, what she had done, what she wants to do, why we need to do it, how she thinks we can do it, and why it has to be her (and not Trump) !!!

We’re going to follow the money and see that they pay their fair share! YES! I’m happy to pay my fair share, I just want the folks with serious money to pay THEIR fair share.
Good morning, Everyone!!! Now I’m gonna back to bed to finish out 8 or 9 hours.

Eight years ago, Michelle Obama got in hot water for saying “For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country.” Maybe she misspoke. Maybe she unintentionally said something that was true. What’s clear is that eight years later a lot of people who were second class citizens are now feeling included and empowered, and they’re also in a patriotic mood.

This is why the Democratic convention was feel-good and positive and happy and uplifting. This is not a party or a coalition that is concerned about losing anything anytime soon.

    Finally catching up… ;)

It’s like an active, shooting war against being a neo-whateveritis asshole hypocritical soulless monster. With a WWII plucky loveable interracial interfaith cast on the side of the good guys, and casting call’s open, all hands on deck. It’s goddamn IRRESISTIBLE.

And it’s not even fake. I think people wouldn’t be crossing these streams if they didn’t ‘get it’. We are actually going to go ‘america fuck yeah!’ against all Bernie Sanders’ pet demons, and a bunch of other problems he didn’t prioritize. The Clinton administration are going to be able to crossbreed radically progressive AND jingoistic ‘U! S! A!’ shouting, and get away with it. I wouldn’t have believed that possible but I’m seeing it, and I think it’s going to work.

Bernie’s now mainstream, and not particularly effective compared to what the Democrats are fixing to do. I completely understand how sad he is. He’s Al Shepard to John Glenn. Turns out the first suborbital space flight was cool but people went bonkers over the first orbital space shot, and there was nothing Shepard could do about it other than let the BIG hero sweep everybody up in his wake, inclusively.

It’s now up to Clinton to be inclusive and allow Bernie to follow along in his own revolution. Consider that reality if you’re mad at Bernie for looking cranky. His only hope for being ‘the leader’ again would be if she failed, sold out, went back on what’s being promised. I see his sourness as evidence he’s convinced she won’t do any such thing. It must be very obvious to an insider like himself.

Bernie is now Hillary’s pet sparrow, bear that in mind if you’re mad about him looking sour. The only hope he’d have for fame and relevance is if Hillary did NOT do his whole platform 1000 times harder and better. I think he’s lost all control of it and it’s now mainstream Democrat and in their name, not his. And crossbred with patriotism GOP-style.

‘tax and spend’ WILL WORK. I don’t think there’s ever, ever been such fertile ground for doing it. It will also reboot the economy (like, properly, not pretend) and that will make the rich richer. It’s basic Mark Blyth anti-austerity theory: pump your GDP, and only trim deficits when you’re in surplus. It worked for Bill and will work for Hillary. It is as much a political act as an economic one because austerity is based on poorbashing and the punishing of anyone not rich, to motivate them (which is pants-on-head retarded ™ Yahtzee)

This could be really, really big.

I did not watch the convention last night, but am/will be catching up on the highlights throughout today.
It’s funny how things work out, but Pres. Obama was the exactly right person to lead the US in 2008, and now I think Ms. Clinton is the exactly right person to take over and lead the US for the next eight years. Funny how that works out.

Kudos to Hillary for sticking to it after what was a bitter defeat back then. The lady has guts and vision. She will make a very fine President.

I totally trust her to also do the justice-aligned things Bernie was weak on. All my black friends have been uniformly and patiently pro-Hillary, from long before this point.

But I’m starting to really believe we are ALSO going to bail Main Street and cause our GDP to explode. Nothing less will do. neo-style capitalism is failing hard: it’s all a stocks bubble, bonds are in the shitter, nobody is investing capital because there’s nothing to invest capital IN, other than ‘financial instruments’ which are another bubble of toxic swamp gas.

Unless I miss my guess, Hillary is boldly going for the ONLY solution to it all, and It. Will. Work.

Dunno if this has already been mentioned (you folks talk too much for me to keep up ;-), but Noam Chomsky was a coauthor with David Halle of a great piece in June on Lesser Evil Voting that needs to be shared.

The broader lesson to be drawn is not to shy away from confronting the dominance of the political system under the management of the two major parties. Rather, challenges to it need to be issued with a full awareness of their possible consequences. This includes the recognition that far right victories not only impose terrible suffering on the most vulnerable segments of society but also function as a powerful weapon in the hands of the establishment center, which, now in opposition can posture as the “reasonable” alternative. A Trump presidency, should it materialize, will undermine the burgeoning movement centered around the Sanders campaign, particularly if it is perceived as having minimized the dangers posed by the far right.

A more general conclusion to be derived from this recognition is that this sort of cost/benefit strategic accounting is fundamental to any politics which is serious about radical change. Those on the left who ignore it, or dismiss it as irrelevant are engaging in political fantasy and are an obstacle to, rather than ally of, the movement which now seems to be materializing.

    Read the whole thing.

It’s not an exhaustive list (it’s too short to be) but it makes a strong case. It’s good ammo to use in your battles with your Bernie or Bust friends.

Less than a mile from the heart of downtown Atlanta, a hidden treasure, a secret sanctuary, welcomes you. This garden cemetery, founded in 1850, is the final resting place of many of Atlanta’s settlers, builders, and most noted citizens like Bobby Jones, Margaret Mitchell, and Maynard Jackson. It is also a showplace of sculpture and architecture, and a botanical preserve with ancient oaks and magnolias. Here in this peaceful place the full scope of the city’s rich and fascinating history unfolds before you.

Still no cemetery.

Hmmmm…. Many times in my wanderings I have stumbled across a cemetery that isn’t on the map, but never have I seen one on a map that wasn’t there on the land. So I drove by the location again only this time I noticed what had appeared from the road to be nothing but a pile of trash had a grey granite marker on it. I got out and walked up to a pile of old brittle plastic flowers and faded flags and read the inscription:

    @MattF:

    She’s really gone odious.

She’s desperate. Breitbart’s Milo Y-whatever has taken over her Bold Contrarian slot on the college Young Repubs circuit, because he’s younger & edgier & has 40-odd interns to keep his social media profile up-to-the-second. If Coulter can’t gin up a bunch of Oberlin students or Oakland anarchists to throw a media-catching hissyfit at her, she’ll be reduced to doing dinner theatre at Mar-a-Largo.

@liberal: He died for his country.. period full stop. The politics of the war were above his pay grade. He answered the call of his ‘adopted’ country by joining the Volunteer army and in Lincoln’s words gave the last full measure of devotion to it. He didn’t have to join the army. He could have just gone about his business as a civilian. Or if there had been a draft he could have hidden in Indiana (dan Quale) , Texas (W), Georgia (Newt), Wyoming (Darth Vader Chaney) and a long and disgusting list of people willing to invest other peoples children in war.

It is hard to forget his father’s dignity when in a quiet voice ripped ‘old little hands’ several new ones.

So I will do something here that I normally resist on the blog because I think adult engagement is better than childish invective but in this case GO TO H*****LL

Okay, I’m as verklempt at that this morning as I was when it hit me that Hilz killed it (no, she’s no Obama but she killed it in her own way) and that the DNC has now re-claimed the mantle of the meaning of America. The party of optimism and can-do. This convention was a home run in every way, including making her enemies on both the right and left looking like the assholes they are. Somewhere, Will Rogers is wondering if he was wrong all along…Nah, he wasn’t, but the whole production was amazeballs.

If we don’t retake the Congress, none of these progressive initiatives will have legs. If we don’t reverse the age-old trend of Dems not voting in midterms, everything will revert in 2018 to full-court GOP obstructionism. It’s great that we are in the pole position to keep the White House, but so much more is needed to end the stalemate. We need to fracture that insane political party into little pieces. Maybe in time they will come back together like the terminator in T2, but not until we can get some real progress made. The enemy is not just Trump, it’s the ability of the other party to keep gumming up the works for years to come. GOTFV!

Every time I read our resident Bernie proselytize, I react with the same fascination I reserve for my roomie, who believes everything cooks best at high.

I rather detest Fight Song but I do think Hilz and the DNC killed it. I care more and reacted more to the people who spoke who didn’t hold office. That’s what this is all about. Can’t wait to volunteer for the local Dems table.

The illegal war of aggression can only be blamed on the Commander-in-Chief George Walker Bush. The individual soldiers sent to Iraq went there on behalf of their oath of service to the constitution of the United States of America. I still remember taking the oath in March, 1969.

So Captain Khan died in service to the constitution of the US, and also too, screw you, you despicable and ignorant ratfuquer.

Last night Secretary Clinton gave us a clear vision of what her Democratic party looks like. Above all inclusive. Plenty of room for people of all colors, faiths, genders, and sexual orientation. Even room for conservatives. Strongly progressive on domestic issues. Serious and strong on national defense.

She reminded us that while America isn’t perfect, it is already great. But that we all can – and should – work to make it greater.

I was truly inspired. (Something I didn’t expect.)

Thanks for the shoutout, AL, btw! Am flattered!

I have been thinking about what Cole said the other day about Obama – that Obama made him want to be a better man, a better person. Listening to Hillary Clinton last night gave me something of that same feeling.

I am thinking about all the times I backed down, didn’t rise to a challenge, was thin-skinned or small-minded or faint-hearted enough to let insults get to me, misunderstandings and set-backs drag me down. In short, when I let circumstances make me afraid or reactive.

I look at Hillary Clinton and I see a woman who has NEVER backed down or buckled under the weight of history, events, circumstances that would break most of us.

Receiving the applause and cheers of a great crowd of people, and the NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

I am not going to be ashamed of what I haven’t managed to accomplish. But I am going to be looking at HRC for every day of my life for these next few years and saying, “damn. Look at what SHE’S doing. What’s *your* excuse?”

    That is all. Thank you.

The current gap in women voters is around 24%. I wonder how much higher this convention and HRC’s speech may have pushed it. Speaking as an old guy, I just don’t think a lot of men appreciate what this means to middle aged and above women. Every woman who has been passed over for a promotion, even though she was better qualified. Every woman who has worked for less pay then their male counterparts. Every woman who has to put up with casual sexism from lunkheads. Every mother who has hopes and dreams for their daughters. Every woman who has waited on tables and been stiffed on the tip because women don’t need as much as men. And on into infinity.

A friend whose older son is in the Navy admitted that Khizr Khan’s speech brought him to tears. Every parent of a soldier knows the risk, and none want to trade that Blue Star for Gold.

So we were all gleeful for him when Mr. Khan held up his pocket Constitution and not only pwned the Apricot Fluff Disaster for not reading it, but informed him, “You have sacrificed nothing.”

The rat bastid hasn’t dared retort yet. Nor has that slimy son of his.
