Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Even if you have an allergy to pop music, how can you look at so many people enjoying themselves and not feel a little better about the world?

What’s on the agenda, apart from prepping for this evening’s debate?

…here's how you thank @washingtonpost for their investigative journalism

I finally gave in and signed up to my local newspaper, online. 10 a month as well.

We should all do so if we feel the paper practices good journalism. Reward those who should be rewarded.

The internet has a very strange cost calculus. I think it’s the default notion that everything should be free.

@piratedan: The only thing I’ve seen about the questions for tonight is something from CNN stating that the first question is going to be about the Trump tape, that Clinton is going to be asked to speak first, and that Guiliani has said that if asked about the tape,

Trump will “probably” apologize for the tape again when he is on stage Sunday night.

Do you have actual information about the debate questions? From where?

Trump still appears to be basing his debate strategy on an erroneous high risk high reward model. Essentially he’s thinking that if he stands on the bomb and pushes the button there is a high probability chance that he will be blown to pieces, so that must mean there is a low probability chance that he will be catapulted into heaven. No… no there isn’t.

He’s going to stand on stage and talk about Bill Clinton’s dick while the national teevee audience goes, “Ewwww,” and Hillary Clinton follows that up by actually answering policy questions. There’s just no upside for Trump in this dynamic.

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist:

“I think the biggest electoral hazard to Republicans right now is Trump fans who withhold support downballot.”

From where I sit, the GOP’s choice is does it want to die this Nov in the frying pan, or in the fire? And, given, that, I think the smart thing would be for PENCE to drop out with the GOP’s blessing, as the latter outfit cuts off every tie to Trump as it possibly can, stat.

I don’t see how the GOP reclaims the moderates that have left the fold if it comes that the GOP stayed with a barely-closeted white nationalist right through the very bitter end. But if it cuts Trump completely and runs, the resulting electoral harakiri notwithstanding, such a proclamation (though still craven) could re-capture minds (if not hearts), and show that it really does put country above party. (Meantime, they can chase the female and minority vote like a temporarily-panicked abusive boyfriend with sweet promises, only less credibly.)

The plan as I see it also calls for Magical Ponies crapping minty-fresh Tic Tacs, so there might be some details to iron out.

That’s not bad, and I think it’s probably a fair representation of some of the issues people in this country are concerned about. If these questions, or others like them, were actually asked, and if Hillary Clinton were the only person responding, we might even learn something about the policies of the candidates.

Very glad to see two climate change/green energy questions among the top ten (#4 and #10 when I checked). Those are topics that have been sadly ignored, for the most part, in previous debates and town halls. (ETA: By “top ten,” I sorted from most votes to least. Should have made that more clear.)

I think Hillary is much better equipped to show the connective tissue between climate change, energy, infrastructure, jobs and the economy, and education (and so may other things I haven’t listed). She understands that all the big issues are linked, and that choices in any one area necessarily affect choices and outcomes in all the others.

Here is the full text of the 90 second video:

“I’ve never said I’m a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that I’m not. I’ve said and done things I regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong and I apologize.

I have traveled the country talking about change for America, but my travels have also changed me. I’ve spent time with grieving mothers who’ve lost their children, laid-off workers whose jobs have gone to other countries, and people from all walks of life who just want a better future. I have gotten to know the great people of our country and I’ve been humbled by the faith they’ve placed in me. I pledge to be a better man tomorrow, and will never, ever let you down.

Let’s be honest, we’re living in the real world. This is nothing more than a distraction from the important issues we’re facing today.

We are losing our jobs, we are less safe than we were eight years ago and Washington is totally broken. Hillary Clinton and her kind have run our country into the ground. I’ve said some foolish things, but there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women, and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. We will discuss this more in the coming days. See you at the debate on Sunday.”

As you see just the first part is his apology for his words, the rest is excuses and Clenis blaming.

The news side of the NYT sucks, but the editorial page is good, especially given Krugman. On the other hand, the Post’s news side is great but their stable of aging neocon columnists and their totally awful editorial page editor suck. Too bad we can’t combine NYT’s edit page and Post’s news side. As bad as the NYT is, I refuse to have anything to do with anything Fred Hiatt has his smarmy fingers in.

I think I’m going to bed early tonight, with hopes of vanquish greeting me in the morning. In honor of Clinton vs. Trump round 2, a blonde joke…

A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap and politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun.

He explains, “I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vise versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep.

The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you $500.00.” This catches the blonde’s attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question.

“What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer.

Okay says the lawyer, your turn. She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, but gets no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the Library of Congress, but still no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworker, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500. The blonde says,”Thank you,” and turns back to get some more sleep.

The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, “Well, what’s the answer?”

Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep. And you thought blondes were dumb.

    I’ve never said I’m a perfect person,

Actually, Donald, you’ve spent most of your adult life claiming to be a perfect person — the best, the richest, the most handsome, the most manly, the best words, the smartest, the greatest education, the savviest real estate developer, the cleverest businessman — you can’t open your mouth without claiming all the superlatives for yourself.

nor pretended to be someone that I’m not.

Two words: bull and shit. You routinely posed as John Miller and John Barron, variously Trump spox, PR people, or newly-hired senior staff in the Trump Organization. You absolutely loved pretending to be someone you’re not.

So, Donald, since literally the first fifteen words of your weak, lame, pathetic, loser, low-energy, sad excuse for an apology were flat-out lies, tell me why the fuck we should believe anything that follows:

I’ve said and done things I regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong and I apologize.

I had forgotten the specifics, but I’m not surprised. The MSM avoid the hell out of the topic unless they’re doing a made-for-teevee “documentary,” and that, as we know, requires and even-handed, balanced “both sides” approach. Real people, OTOH, have genuine concerns.
