It can’t happen here. Can it?

Think of it this way: it has happened here. The country was built on the ethnic cleansing of a continent’s worth of people, justified by the racial prejudices of the day. Hitler, in fact, expressed some admiration for that when drawing up his own plans; IIRC, his whole plan for “lebensraum” in the east was at least partly an imitation of American westward expansion.

It can always happen again. Hopefully, votes permitting, it won’t happen again.

    Will point your attention here.

So if the Russians are not actually changing our election results, what might they be doing? The hacks and probing of election systems generate headlines which can undermine the public’s trust in the electoral process. As CNN noted, the hacks have already caused people to be suspicious about the election. And this feeds exactly into Donald Trump’s irresponsible statements that the vote will be rigged or stolen. In a close race, it is possible that Trump won’t concede and will instead create turmoil and threaten what we take for granted: the peaceful transition of political power between presidencies.

In short, the Russian hacking of our elections should be seen for what it is: an attempt to manipulate and destabilize the U.S., with an unwitting assist from an irresponsible presidential candidate spewing unsupported claims about rigged elections.

Trump may be unwitting, but there’s no fucking way that Bannon and Stone are unwitting in this. I’m almost wondering if we won’t have a criminal intervention over this before the election.

@Punchy: Don’t discount it too much:

The Democratic-leaning automated pollster Public Policy Polling asked North Carolina voters last week a more specific question: “If Hillary Clinton is elected president, do you think it will be because more people voted for her, or because the election results are rigged for her?” This is establishing a more direct causal relationship; it’s not just the election being “rigged,” but also that this rigging will be the deciding factor. In this case, 69 percent of Trump supporters agreed.

The problem in this case is that there’s no amount of evidence you can produce to get them to back off of this. Countless evidence has been provided to show that in-person fraud isn’t a thing, but because elected officials all over the country have insisted that it’s a major problem, people will believe it. If Trump pulls 40%, what do you do when 25% of the country believe that the election was rigged? That’s a serious problem. Civil wars start over that sort of thing. I’m not saying we will go down that route, but this will not go back to business as usual.

I’ve been thinking about Trump’s psyche — not the psycho-sexual stuff but the narcissism. He craves adulation, vindication, “winning.” He also — it’s been noted extensively — is very steerable, he’ll parrot what he hears from the last person who spoke to him, as long as that person assures him that he is great and he is winning. Bannon and his minions are the RWNJs who actively hate HRC, are racist, anti-Semitic, and they are running Trump’s game. They are using him for their own agenda, and he’s wallowing in it because they are assuring him that he’s king of the world. The “sacrifce” language in the speech today is not Trump, it’s Bannon & Co. appealing to the Christianists.

Does he do the debate Wednesday night? What do y’all think? I think they talk him into it.

They distrust government in even more ways because after believing the election was stolen they then believe they were denied justice. They’ll go all-in on the voter suppression stuff. They’ll start intimidating voters directly. They’ll drive local elections in radical directions. It unravels so badly. There’s a pattern of it in other countries – it’s ugly stuff, and it’ll all be because Republicans were so craven that they were willing to sell out democracy in order to gain power.

Won’t be pleasant if Trump sics his fanatics on the polls, but people volunteering for GOTV can help.
Voter registration, phone banking, getting people to polls, volunteering for GOTV scut work like organizing lists and precinct maps.

Irrefutable evidence of massive popular rejection of Trump and anyone who carried his bags (hey there, GOP down ticket, how you doin’?) will help both win the election and keep things under control after the election.

Past a certain tipping point of massive popular rejection, only a very small minority of white bigots will be willing to say they voted for Trump. A lot of places where Trump got, say, 35 percent, of the vote, you won’t find one in ten people willing to admit it. That will help a lot with the fall out.

Edit: Sadly, that will leave far more than enough people to make Trump a mint if he decides to make some dough off of his toxic nonsense with the new Trump News Network, but will just be a relatively small group of die hard conspiracy theorists and racists and xenophobes.

Whether this stuff is overwrought or on-point, the rhetoric is getting heated and Trump’s in particular is crossing lines we haven’t crossed in some time, if ever. The media, Dem officials, the President himself: all of them ought to be pushing Ryan, McConnell, and McCain to come out publicly and vouch that our elections are fair, and that they will accept the outcome.

They & the GOP foisted this clown upon the nation as an actual, honest-to-goodness presidential nominee: since Hillz is doing the hard work of taking him out, the least they could do is ensure that he doesn’t set the country on fire when he goes down to defeat.

Pessimism says: It can happen here. Definitely. (As Chris says above, it actually has.)

    Optimism says: It won’t.

I understand what a lot of people have been saying about the danger that a more competent politician may take over Trump’s message and ride it to victory next time, but I’m not sure there is such a person out there. At least ten people who had been puffed up by Fox et al. as The Next One were revealed to be paper tigers in the past year. Cruz, Christie, Paul, Rubio and the rest are all damaged goods. It’s very revealing that people are talking about Mike Pence and Paul Ryan extricating themselves from this mess and becoming viable candidates in 2020. That’s nearly as desperate as hoping Rudy Giuliani would take another run at it in 2012.

The GOP won the governorships if something like 10 states in 2010 and if they had bothered trying to run them well, they would have been sitting pretty this year and in good shape for the next round. As it is, none of their “front bench” had any achievements that they were willing to speak of in front of a non-Republican audience. Same with their Senators. Choosing to obstruct everything Obama was trying to do meant that none of the Senators who ran this year had done much of anything. Ted Cruz was best known for shutting the government down.

The GOP won’t be in any better shape in 2020 unless somebody, somewhere, starts doing something constructive, but if they do elect a governor somewhere who will at least try to run his state properly, the Trump voters will disown him. They’re stuck.

Gore (thankfully) didn’t validate the claims of the left that the 2000 election was stolen, nor did other elected officials. They didn’t like the results, and they criticized the process, but they didn’t outwardly declare that the election was stolen.

Validating ideas is much more powerful than people realize. If Trump continues with this assertion, can you trust Republicans on board with him to push back? How can they when half or more of them have been saying that election fraud is a serious problem – and are saying that with increasing volume. Democrats can’t be the ones to quiet this any more than Bush could have quieted Democrats in 2000. It’s got to come from trusted voices. Ryan is the most likely to be the one to do it, if he himself has any credibility with Trump voters by the time this is over.

Sure, but that doesn’t mean the election was rigged. It just means that he believes that those voters made a bad choice. People need to fundamentally trust that the democratic processes that surround us are sound, and elected officials, particularly those from your own party, are the best voice to defend those processes. That’s at risk of breaking down this year. Look at what happens when African Americans believe that they will be targeted by police – they stop calling the police even to report crimes they are witnessing. They remove themselves from a critical democratic component. When women believe they will be attacked for reporting a sexual assault, they stop reporting sexual assaults. If they don’t find justice, they question other parts of the justice system. These are all parallel behaviors. They are all social breakdowns.

A day after scandal erupted over a questionable comment Donald Trump made to a 10-year-old girl in 1992, a new report shows he made a similar comment to a 14-year-old girl around the same time.

According to a Chicago Tribune wire from December 1992, Trump approached a youth choir group outside the then-Trump-owned Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and engaged the group in conversation.

Trump asked one of the girls her age, and when she said she was 14, Trump replied, “Wow! Just think—in a couple of years I’ll be dating you.”

You can thank the CA GOP for that. They did it to themselves. I think there are a number of moderate Arnold-style GOPers around CA in city and county government. But they have a hard time moving up. The general electorate doesn’t trust them to be moderate and tolerant, and the CA GOP seems to hate moderate GOPers (who will responsibly and honestly try to run a government with good faith effort) with the heat a billion supernovas. Hates them far more than Dems or liberals. Arnold can come back to CA and have good time public events with Jerry Brown and talk about the common initiatives they are working on (that Arnold started, or proposed, and Brown is doing) like renewable energy, bullet train, state health care reform. I think the standard issue reactionary CA GOPer pol would lose control and try to deck Arnold (which is probably not a good idea, but I think they would lose it and try).

The “Know Your Value” thing looks like it was more about promoting Mika’s personal brand and that show than anything for women.

I know it is not an easy task to put yourself out there, but I assure you that the exercise is one that will help you grow your confidence from the inside out.
Today we announced the three AMAZING finalists for the first “Grow Your Value” bonus competition. These women — who put themselves out there in a one minute pitch — will attend the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute in Orlando, FL and train with coaches, receiving tools and resources for professional and personal transformations. On April 10, they will showcase their newfound skills and confidence onstage and under the lights to compete for a $10,000 bonus. The “Grow Your Value” bonus competition drives home the message that it is important for women to both learn their value and communicate it effectively. This will be a profound journey that we will take with our finalists, learning from them along the way.

They set it up like a reality tv show. So the women devote 6 or so months to competing in this thing for “a chance” at $10,000. They literally would be better off getting a part time job.

I’m not that worried about Donald Trump’s army massing after the election and rounding us all up. I’m worried that this entire country seems to be riddled with rip-offs and scams, and so many of them are run or backed by people who make millions of dollars.

The problem is that there is hard core of the Trump fan base that is either cynically depraved in way that has not often been seen in US politics (edit:probably the white nationalists who he has tolerated, like David Duke), or totally nuts, or both (which is also an option). Saw a headline from NewsMax (think that is what it is called) that says Ivanka and her (I suppose ‘Jewish’ should go here) husband Jared Kushner are part of the global insider conspiracy to bring down Trump.

So, yeah, people could get hurt with this toxic brew of nonsense, since some Trump fans seem simply out-of-it nuts and over the edge.

The Southern fascist movement was essentially the anti-Reconstruction movement. The KKK was their brownshirts, the goons to do things they couldn’t get the official government to do – sometimes because they were so bad, sometimes because they didn’t have the government yet. And I heard Limbaugh hiss out with disgust that liberals think that consent is a standard that is important in relationships between people. Let alone rape and sexual assault, think about what an attitude like that says about behavior in society, what people are allowed to do to each other, what government is allowed to wrt to reproductive freedom, freedom of speech and debate, economic exploitation, criminal justice. It is chilling.

Fascism is not to strong a word for where that leads. What does your crummy little consent mean for anything when it contradicts the National Will? It means nothing. So, whoever is deemed to embody that National Will can take your time, your property, your ability to speak and protest, your vote, your family, your body, your life, anything.

But, then, Limbaugh claims he is just an comedian, an entertainer.

They need a charismatic leader to call them to arms, and unless DJT wants to be arrested and charged with sedition, he won’t call for armed rebellion.

I am more worried about McVeigh style ‘lone wolves’ than I am anything else at this point.

Good fucking God. Just read this on CNN:

Throughout this campaign, Trump has laid out a clear, populist message and set of goals. Nearly any voter, on the other hand, will tell you they aren’t sure what Clinton’s core message is or what her agenda would be in the White House.

    Fuck off, Zucker.

A bit OT, but have you heard about Ava Duvernay’s Netflix documentary “13”? A couple of my friends saw it and said it was devastating. Can’t get link.

No, and thanks for the referral. Even without seeing it, it puts the insane rate of incarceration in the US into context – as well as the racial bias.

Wow. Just watched Trump’s speech. He’s really gonna end up in a bunker below NYC with a self-inflicted bullet hole in his head.

Closest bunker to Trump Tower in NYC is the E train. Everyone’s gonna be way pissed off that the E train’s gonna be delayed. Especially during rush hour.

The one reason I don’t think we’ll see any mass uprising when Trump loses is because most of his big supporters are big p**sies, just like he is. They can shove protestetors around at a Trump rally but they’re in a small minority overall. Ourside of a rally or Facebook, they’re scared, insecure wimps….just like their hero.

This is from an interview (on the Southern Poverty Law Center website ) that Hatewatch did in June with M H##mb##h, a possible leader for T’s alt-r followers in future political action :

Q : Trump’s candidacy has done much to energize white nationalists in the United States. What happens for your movement if Trump loses?

A : If Trump loses, … it’s not going to be because of the people, [it will be because of a] betrayal by the Republican establishment that cares more about Wall Street donors and international interests than their own constituents. I think it would be very clear in that case that it would be great for us. Because once people finally realize the Republican party is opposed to them, will mock them, and do everything against the things they voted for, then the only logical path for every day working families is to be able to come to groups like the Traditionalist Worker Party.

Q : Lastly, as a southern nationalist and a white nationalist, what are your thoughts on the outcome of the United Kingdoms’ decision to leave the European Union (EU), what was known as the BREXIT vote?

A : It’s a great shot in the arm to be able to show that self-determination is popular again and that this sense of being opposed to globalism and supporting sovereignty is normal. If secession can happen peacefully with Britain leaving EU, and the majority of the people can support it when presented with a choice, then I think that is a great example for us in the United States. I think that the people will support this message of sovereignty and ending immigration and ending free trade agreements that hurt the working class and to be able to support our culture and retake control of our communities. It’s a great example for us in the United States on how multiculturalism and federal tyranny can be opposed peacefully and legally.

@efgoldman: Clarification: the GOP has had no effect in CA since Prop 187, which was a mini-Trump-campaign in one bill. Required schools and ERs to report ‘illegals’.

California has rejected Republicans as a threat to a healthy body politic since 1995 as a result.

@jk: no need to launch them that far. Into the sun, would be fine. Or drop them into a volcano, let gravity do the work. And heat…the blistering, flesh-boiling heat of lava. Or, we could go all 2nd century CE on them: sewn into a leathern sack with live animals and dropped into the river. According to wiki, this happened until almost modern times in Bavaria. Bavaria, forsooth. Nowadays, to spare the innocent animals, we could use animatronic creatures with extra-horrific horns, hooves, fangs and stingers.

Or…brain-wave…a hive of japanese giga-hornets. Nobody would feel sorry for them, so win-win.

I don’t believe for a second it’s just pundits being dumbasses. Threats are being made. They consider themselves in danger.

Joe Scarborough has been told, you WILL die for Trump or the Russian Mob will get you. Your reputation can die or you and your toy can die, your choice. There is no third option. So be a good boy and carry the water and don’t fuck up, and there might be some money in it for you. Not much, because the other choice is you get killed, even tonight. So here’s your talking points, and keep your woman quiet…

I think it’s ridiculous to believe they’re THAT dumb and craven. There’s a whole other level going on here, and a bunch of these people are being given credible threats, a sudden escalation in pressure. They started as bootlickers, sure, but things got serious. I think they are now directly threatened and following orders. Look at Mika holding her tongue and trying to act normal. I don’t believe just keeping a job at a network is that serious.
